Brimming with rich mythology, deadly romance, and fantastically flawed characters — absolutely spellbinding!
I read book 1 in the Bone Grace series and moved on to book 2 without writing a review and my opinion of book 2 is tainting my rating of book 1…also reading book 2 right now, a lot of their decisions and attitudes are really bugging me
I enjoyed the story, the world building, the relationships, the development of relationships, and the narrators. I’m listening to the audiobook so the different voices really helps get into the characters’ mind. And Bastien’s narrator’s voice is…!!!! LOL
There were a few times where the characters made assumptions or decisions based on incomplete information which causes all the problems in book 1. STUBBORN should have been part of the title somehow because EVERY SINGLE ONE of the main characters (Bastien, Sabine, Ailesse, Jules and Odiva) are just so damn stubborn and fixate on what THEY want. Sabine really isn’t that bad until the end of the book.
Something I really liked was that once both Sabine and Ailesse were separated from their familia they could finally question the way things were handled. The Leurress are kind of like a cult, they have very strict rules and very hardcore beliefs. Sabine in her own way, had always questioned the ways of the Leurress and wasn’t exactly happy to have to do the things that were expected of her. And in her own way, she put up a resistance as much as she could. Ailesse on the other hand, drank the kool-aid and was ready to be the next leader. Never questioning the hierarchy or the way things are done or the things that are demanded of them. Her time with Bastien, Marcel, and Jules, she starts to see that all she was made to believe might not be the right thing. She questions her upbringing and tries to see things differently.
Right after I finished book 1, I would’ve recommended it but now with book 2 in the forefront, I can’t say that I do
I am so glad that I started the new year with this book. I absolutely loved it and hope it means I’ll read more great books this year. The story was exciting and the characters were fantastic. I read it in 3 days and it made me cry, laugh and gasp with surprise. The next book doesn’t come out until the end of March and I’m devastated.
Ailesse and Sabine are strong female characters who struggle to do what is right for them and their Bone Crier famille. Ailesse does everything she can to please her mother, the matrone, but never seems to accomplish it. On the same note, Sabine tries to do what needs to be done to get to her rite of passage, but she just doesn’t have the heart to kill the animals to obtain the bones needed to acquire her strengths. She made me very proud though when she disobeyed the matrone and went after Ailesse. Sabine finally finds that strength she needs and takes control of her destiny.
Bastien and his group of friends are loyal to each other and committed to avenging their fathers’ deaths. Their determination and respect for each other is unending. I was not a fan of Bastien’s friend Jules, though. She’s a rough one who doesn’t give Ailesse a chance to explain things and she tries to control her brother too much. Her brother, Marcel, is super smart and I really liked him. I liked how he rambled on about things and showed his knowledge.
Very interesting fantasy world of siren ferriers of the dead. Loved it!!
Bone Crier’s moon is the first book in the duologie Bone Grace by Kathryn Purdie and the first book of that author that I was reading and I wasn’t dissapointed. And the cover is really beautiful.
The Bone Crier’s sacred duty is to ferried the dead into either the goddess Elara’s Night Heavens or Tyrus’s Underworld. But this doesn’t come without sacrifice. The gods demends a sacrifice for their power and that cost is The Bone Criers true love.
Ailesse is prepared for that. Have been all her life. As the daughter of the matriarch she will be following her mother’s step. The Bone crier’s powers are provided by the animal they killed. The strengh the bones gives them depends of the animal that life is sacrifice. A Bone Crier’s usually carry 3 bones and the matriarch have 5.
At the day of Ailesse rite of passage to become a ferrier, Bastien have other plans. His father have been killed by one of those ferrier and he want nothing but revenge. But things won’t go as plan and having heard Ailesse song their fates gonna be entwined.
They’re also the PoV of another character, Sabine. She can’t resolve to become a ferrier and doesn’t wants to killed animals to carrie their bones. But when Ailesse, her best friend, his kidnapped by Bastien she will do whaterver it takes to save her, even defying the Bone Crier’s traditions and going after the Matriarch orders.
I really have love this new serie and that world and can’t wait to read the sequel, Bone Crier’s Dawn.
Have you read a book you were sure to dislike, but wound up falling in love???
That’s what happened for me with Bone Crier’s Moon by Kathryn Purdie. It was a fantastic experience. I bought the special edition of this book via @litjoy because the cover and title were interesting but I was skeptical.
When I received it, I was stunned by the gorgeous artwork INSIDE the dust cover. I mean…who does that??? LitJoy’s special editions are legitimately high quality. Despite that, my enthusiasm was apathetic because the description of the book seemed to lean towards necromancy, murder and unrequited love, which are all subjects I’m not interested in.
Three chapters in, I had to face up to just how wrong my assumptions were regarding this book. I devoured the book in a couple days. It draws the reader into a fascinating new world and magic system. The story follows several characters with interweaving plot lines which come together at the end into a heart wrenching, climactic, cliff hanger which leaves one desperate to read the next book and find out what happens next.
Each character is vivid and naturally developed through out the novel. The suspense and mystery are strung out expertly until the very end. There is a whole lot of conflict and some resolution, and thats what leaves the reader wanting more. I think Sabine is my favorite character. I believe she grows the most through the book and is the most relatable to me.
All in all, this book was a big surprise for me. I didn’t expect to love it, but I do. I learned a valuable lesson. Don’t rely on the book descriptions! I definitely give this 5 hearts and look forward to the next book in the series eagerly.
Interesting novel. Bone Crier’s Moon is a swift read because it has such a strong opening and then leaps forward to something drastically different. The novel splits between three characters — Bastien, Ailesse, and Sabine — all of whom have distinct personalities. Each voice is so different, and they develop differently as well. Even more impressive, there is no love triangle whatsoever. These three characters develop together and on their own, through their circumstances. These characters each become more different than who they were. They all bring a perfect balance to the storytelling, giving more dimension to the world within the novel.
These three characters are also incredibly relatable. They all have their little flaws, but their drive, their passion, their narratives, and how they flow and grow to make them all relatable. Ailesse is continuously trying to prove herself to her mother, Bastien is seeking revenge for the death of his father, and Sabine, she is the most gentle character who is continuously trying to prove herself to everyone, except her best friend. As their dynamics grow through the plot twists of the novel, they each learn something about themselves that the reader can again grasp onto.
The world-building is also something Purdie did very well. There is much magic here, and some parts are cruel, magic comes with a price, and the price for guiding souls to the afterlife is giving up one’s true love. Purdie thought out the mythology and magic behind the Bone Crier’s. It not only feels fresh, but it is interesting. Purdie structures her world carefully and uses detail to lure the reader into this world she has masterfully constructed.
Purdie also makes this novel enjoyable by making it unpredictable. The twists and turns the novel takes, take the reader by surprise. Furthermore, coupled with the fantastic pacing, this novel is a quick addicting read. There are so many complex emotions between the characters that influence the high stakes tension of the novel, and it grips the reader even more.
Bone Crier’s Moon is an incredible new start to a fresh, unique, compelling new series.
