A twelve-year-old girl and her younger brother are on the run in the Idaho woods, pursued by four men they have just watched commit murder–four men who know exactly who William and Annie are. And where their mother lives. Retired policemen from Los Angeles, the killers easily persuade the local sheriff to let them lead the search for the missing children. Now there’s nowhere left for William and … William and Annie to hide…and no one they can trust. Until they meet Jess Rawlins.
Rawlins, an old-school rancher, knows trouble when he sees it. He is only one against four men who will stop at nothing to silence their witnesses. But in this thrilling mystery novel from C.J. Box, these ex-cops don’t know just how far Rawlins will go to protect William and Annie…and see that justice is done.

I had a hard time laying this book down to get other things done!
C.J. Box is my new favorite author. I enjoy his Joe Pickett series and I have read two of his stand alone books. He certainly keeps your interest and his stories have a twist at the end so you can never figure out the ending before it happens. Great writer
I really liked the book. However, the ending was too vague.
If you are fans of CJBox you will enjoy this book. It is entertaining and suspenseful with a great ironic ending.
Read this previously and had forgotten parts so re-read some months later and still was entranced with the premise and the mental pictures of the damage to law enforcement image the situation would cause.
Love the joe picket and Virgil series. Can’t go wrong with Box.
Can’t wait for the next book.
I’m from the part of the U.S. where this is set so it was great to read a book and really clearly visualize the locales. I am also a huge of C.J. Box’s Joe Pickett series, but hadn’t read any of his other works. I read this in one sitting – really enjoyed it!
The author was accurate in describing the caliber or gauge of the firearms the bank robbers had. So many authors are not familiar with or do not research details.
I love anything written by Box
I have read every book of the Joe Pickett series in a 2 year time span! The characters are great and the books are hard to put down!
I have enjoyed the Joe Pickett series by this author immensely. This stand-alone novel is amazing, particularly the protagonist, Jess Rawlins, who winds up as the protector of two small children fleeing villains. If you like novels in rural settings, don’t miss this one.
One of his best. Don’t miss it.
this was a very good book
excellent
It took a couple of chapters to get interested in the story & characters. Then I was hooked.
Too much filler
Love all CJ Box books!! This one was different and still excellent!
Love C.J. Box Pickett series. This is as good.
I like Box and this is a pretty good story, but not as good as his Joe Pickett books.
I think this was an earlier offering.
A couple of kids see some men execute another man and go on the run. They end up on a ranch with a down on his luck rancher, who decides to protect them.
Not as tight as most of Box’s books.
As always, CJ Box really delivers the action with this book! Once I started reading it I couldn’t put it down. If you like action then you’ll love this book. It would make a good movie, I wonder if anyone has thought of that!
