A twelve-year-old girl and her younger brother are on the run in the Idaho woods, pursued by four men they have just watched commit murder–four men who know exactly who William and Annie are. And where their mother lives. Retired policemen from Los Angeles, the killers easily persuade the local sheriff to let them lead the search for the missing children. Now there’s nowhere left for William and … William and Annie to hide…and no one they can trust. Until they meet Jess Rawlins.
Rawlins, an old-school rancher, knows trouble when he sees it. He is only one against four men who will stop at nothing to silence their witnesses. But in this thrilling mystery novel from C.J. Box, these ex-cops don’t know just how far Rawlins will go to protect William and Annie…and see that justice is done.

This book had me on the edge of my seat from the very beginning. The characters were great and the story exciting.
Whether you’re new to C.J. Box’s books or just haven’t gotten around to this one yet, pick this one up. I read it in one sitting the first time, and reread it at least once a year. Box paints a vivid picture of two children who witness a murder, and the tough-as-nails rancher who protects them from those who would bring them harm to silence them. …
Uncomplicated plot but full of tension. Good versus bad. I like the ending.
Make sure you carve out time in your schedule when you get to the halfway point in this book. It took me about two weeks to get through the first half (I’m a college student going through midterms) and once I reached the halfway point, it was full steam ahead! I could not put it down! I finished the second half of the book in about 48 hours. …
I have fallen in love with CJ Box books… every one so far has been excellent
A very good stand-alone novel by Wyoming writer, C.J. Box. The story is fast and intense, you can’t put down the book!
good
A gritty and suspenseful tale that kept me turning pages well into the night. Loved it!
I loved this book and now I need to read more from this author
Loved it!
Very good book until the end. Seemed the ending was rushed.
Box never disappoints
An excellent read; nothing too heavy but consistently entertaining.
Not C.J. bow’s best, but still good.
This is not the Wyoming Box tale. Set in North Idaho, the story keeps the reader from much to cheer about until the end. Ruggedness abounds. The plot is believable.
This author never disappoints
Love all of C J Box novels. Characters and story never dull.
Excellent book, cJ box scores again !
I thought this book was great. This is the north west as I pictured it. I love the storyline. I love the people. I love the plot. Great summer read.
I really enjoyed the book.
