Silver Medalist Dan Poynter’s Global eBook AwardsDetective Cadillac Holland’s first homicide investigation starts with the question of whether the dog that mauled Biggie Charles Lynley was sent to do someone else’s dirty work or if it was just a good judge of character. That may be the only easy question to answer, as the list of people who wanted Biggie dead seems to grow with each person … person Detective Holland interviews. Everyone has a secet worth killing to protect, even the detective himself.

I’ve read these book completely out of order, but it is nice to know that even though I have read them out of order, I don’t feel lost. But I will say since I started with book 4 first in this series and one of the constant themes in this book is about Detective Holland’s missing father I was glad to see that we might be getting some answers soon. Although if you read this book, there is an answer given, I’m not 100% certain that Cadillac honestly believes what he was told and won’t stop until he gets definite answers.
Another aspect of these books that I love is that it’s not always an open and close case, even though I’m sure Avery would love for Cadillac’s cases to be like this. There is always more than meets the eye with each case and the investigation into the death of Biggie Charles Lynley is no different. While everyone else would love to just call it quits and blame the dog on the killing, Detective Holland isn’t one to always take the easy answers.
A suspenseful mystery. It was fast paced and exciting! I loved the crime mystery and really enjoyed solving it along with the character.
Cadillac Holland is a complex, “troubled” cop and I absolutely love him. When a rap music exec, Biggie, is mauled by his pit bull Cadillac takes the case. With a slew of suspects and a corrupt city his investigation becomes very complicated. There is so much going on in this mystery with multiple storylines-glimpses into Cadillac’s past, his missing Father and the murder of Biggie that I had a hard time keeping everything straight. However, it held my interest and had me swiftly turning the pages. The background of NOLA and the food descriptions were first-rate. I recommend this gritty cop story to lovers of crime and mystery novels.
Did the pit bull do the dead or was it the girlfriend, bodyguard, or even one of the many enemy’s of the former gangster turned record producer? ( cough cough, yea right) But Det. Holland a,k,a Cadillac, was given the case so he’s going to work it. I love that the story takes place in a New Orleans , with real places and their descriptions. It makes it all the more real for me. There are everything from gangs, little old ladies, dog trainers , Cadillac’s odd mother, and some good/bad cops. When a calm quiet, well -behaved pit bull is your only suspect in a murder , something is just not right. But who did the deed, and are others in danger is it one or more people who are involved in it. Someone is hiding something but who is it or are they several secrets floating around?
4 out of 5 stars
Cadillac’s first case looks easy enough it all started with the question did the dog maul Biggie Charles Lynley , was he sent to do the dirty work or does the dog just have a great judge o character . Now Cadillac has to figure out who wanted Biggie dead but it only keeps growing with each person he talks to . Everyone has a secret to keep and a secret that is worth killing for even Cadillac himself .
Cadillac is on his first case and it actually is kind of a fun one . He is a very strong character that is also crafty in the way he handles people. It seems like sometimes he doesn’t really want to be an officer he is really comfortable around food . Like with all good characters we get to see him at his best and at his worst . We see that he is battling with some ptsd from the Iraq war. I truly love this character and his way of solving the mysteries he has to solve.
This is a book that you can get lost in . The author can really paint a picture and he uses New Orleans as the perfect back drop for his story. The characters good and bad are very well written and complex . I love mysteries and this series has me wanting more . There is so much going on in the book and so many twists and turns . There are actually two stories going on in the book Cadillac wanting to find out where his father disappeared to after Katrina and then the story of who wanted to kill Biggie . I will say this , this story is well written will have you on the edge of your seat all the way through . So I would add this book to your summer reading list.
I really enjoy these murder mystery thrillers. Secrets, revenge, murder. Great story.
