Best friends—maybe more—until addiction shatters everything.Reeling from professional failure, Andrew Harris needs a fresh start. Jamie Carson is thrown off balance when Andy resurfaces in her life. Though her faith in God has remained solid, even through her mother’s long illness and after her death, Jamie battles loneliness. Andy fills her days, whispering significance to her heart. But his rejection of the faith she thought they’d once shared, and his alarming drinking habit keep her heart from plunging into deep, murky waters. Or do they?
Andy pursues an intimacy Jamie knows she must guard against. But as the line between loyalty and love blurs, things get complicated—until a devastating blow breaks their relationship. For Jamie, one thing becomes clear: Andy needs a miracle, and she isn’t it.
Will Andrew allow the hand of grace to redeem his legacy of addiction, or will he and Jamie both remain casualties of heartbreak?

This was not an easy book to read because of its realistic portrayal of alcoholism and the devastation it causes. BUT it was a worthwhile book to read because it is full of the right kind of hope. Not of self-reform but of salvation.
I loved Ryan and his role in the story and would have liked to see a little bit more of what his friendship with Andrew cost him personally. We don’t see enough stories with this model of male friendship.
A good look at friendship and what true friendship is.
Loved this book. I couldn’t put it down.
This is a well written emotional book dealing with addiction of Andrew “Andy” that changed him as a person. This story shows Andy’s struggles to come to terms with this addiction, and find a life with his best friend Jamie that he has known from childhood. In time he came back into his faith, and through his Christian friends he got the helped he needed. A happy ending for Andy and Jamie. I would recommend this book.
I found this book to be an emotional one. One of love, forgiveness, alcohol addiction torment, acceptance of yielding to God for help and friendship. I thoroughly enjoyed this challenging book!
This book has been in my to-be-read pile for a while.
I’ve heard so much about it but never taken the time to read it. I’m so glad I did this week.
This story is one that will tug at your heart because it gets down and real. There is so much in it.
It’s a beautiful, touching tale of young friendships, adult issues of addiction, forgiveness, healing, self-esteem, and love.
The author Jennifer Rodewald didn’t sugar-coat the struggles of dealing with someone who is an alcoholic. She wrote her characters with all their flaws and yet she wove into this story the beautiful redemption and healing God can give.
I highly recommend you pick this book up to read. It touched my heart and I hope it does yours.
WOW – having had some family members having a drinking problem, I could relate to this wonderfully written book. Great characters! With God, all things are possible, but one has to “let go” to receive HIS blessings.
Great
Just OK. Characters too predictable, not realistic… nothing to them to support what they profess.
The main characters grew up together, then after several years apart, meet again as adults. Once very close, they are now opposites in many ways. He is a talented lawyer who swings from the kindhearted boy she remembers to a selfish drunk. She struggles with her desire to help as well as her growing realization that she needs to protect herself. Trust issues arise as well. The heartbreak of how to handle addiction in a loved one is brought to life. The story does not have a quick resolution as is often the case in this genre. The reality of the situation is that it is not an easy fix, but one that takes time. The victim needs to acknowledge the problem, make changes, and allow himself to accept assistance. It’s a well done story….give it a try!
A story with Christian that deals with the effects alcoholism has on a relationship. All the love, endurance, constant vigilance and caring cannot save an alcoholic unless they realize this demon cannot be conquered without help. With the help of good friends, church involvement and a realization that help is needed, the once-successful attorney comes to his senses after the person who has stood by him ends the relationship and leaves town and his poor choices behind. Once this happens, he goes into AA and slowly his life is turned around but his friend whom he used and took for granted, is so afraid to trust him. I’m sure those who have traveled this road can relate. Long but redeeming story.
This was an interesting book to read, fortunately I have never experienced any of the problems that were faced but it was sort of a learning experience, however I could not understand why she kept going to his aid and bringing herself down until she got to the place that she saw she was helping him keep his life in this mess.
I had never read any of this writer’s book before, I will be looking for them in the future. This book captivated me from the beginning to the end. It has excellent characters who could put you in mind of people you know, with true to life struggles, and the difficult decisions people who love them face.
I really liked this story, but it was painful to read too. It is a story of the realities of alcoholism and the effects on those around the addicted. It’s also a story of how we can change…an innocent person getting very hurt and an addicted person healing, both things can change a person.
This book does not sugar coat the problem and it takes a long time to resolve the tension, but I really was enlightened in how alcohol might be effecting and how it has effected some of my own family members.
There is also a love story or two here that I really enjoyed. Worth the read!
I loved this book! The fact that the story was told from a Christian perspective appealed to me. I will be looking for more books from this author.
Loved how Scripture was used in this book to bring it home to the reader. The problem that had to be confronted is so real in our lives that it was incredible how much it took to come to the realization of how dependent an alcoholic is on the next drink and what it takes to overcome. Awesome story.
Good story of youth, love, pain trgety and salvation. About making lives right.
I liked The characters
This book is so much more than I expected. It was quite realistic and didn’t rush an ending that I thought would happen about halfway through the book where the typical book would have wrapped it up and ended. I definitely recommend reading this book, especially if you are drawn to someone with an addictive personality.
Well written, engaging book that gives hope for those who feel hopeless.
I thought it was really good. It showed how good God is and God can change a person
