This was supposed to be simple. Vengeance was mine. But I should know by now that nothing in life is easy.My end game has changed all because I met someone who wishes I was dead. Yet her hatred is the only thing saving her from The Big Bad. My lies protect her, so the harder she hates, the safer she is.The thing about love and hate—it skates a very thin line. I need to stay away. It’s better for … away. It’s better for everyone if I do. But fighting this is like fighting nature.
Our paths crossed for a reason, and my Tiger isn’t fooled. Once the smoke clears, she will see every player, including me. I don’t deserve a second chance. But I want one…because I want her. The question is, what happens when the truth is finally revealed?
With the end in sight, I can promise you there will be nothing but violence and mayhem.
Oh yes, blood will be shed.

Um… can I just say that Monica James has such a stunning way to spin a tale, especially the darker she gets. This book gets you completely twisted. I mean, emotionally twisted. You are at a loss for words as everything plays out. You devour this book word for word. This one picks right back up after Bullseye and it will have your mind spinning, your heart racing and your stomach in knots.
The raw grit and passion that James embeds into her stories are absolutely spellbinding. It keeps you completely wrapped up in her words. As everything plays out between Bull and Lily, you cannot help but wonder what will happen next. To say my jaw hit the floor a couple times is an understatement. The determination of both of them is awe inspiring. Their passion for each other to love to hate and hate to love is heartbreaking but so beautiful at the same time. The whole race to see it all was absolutely brilliant.
Overall, this duet is bar none, one of the most epic ones I have read my entire life. I mean, I adore James and her words. Literally. ALL HER WORDS! They are unique and one of a kind. The concept alone with The Monsters Within duet will blow your mind. There is just something about the darker side of James that I absolutely will adore forever. I really did not want this duet to end but now is the time to binge it all!
Wow what a ride!
Blowback was just mindblowing. One twist after the other. I didn‘t know what was going on half the time but I loved it nonetheless. I honestly couldn‘t stop reading. The writing was so good and so detailed! Some scene were very grafic and others so very steamy.
I fell in love with Bull and Lily story in book #1 Bullseye. Blowback is the next part of this book and starts right where book 1 ends. We finally got to figure out the connections between all the characters and it was a shock! But sooo very good.
I never guessed anything that happened until the last second and was on the edge of my seat all the damn time. There wasn‘t a dull moment in this book. It was action packed. All the twists and turns throughout this series got revealed ans found a happily ever after at the end.
Lily is such a strong character! She had to go through so much in her life, yet she trusted Bull so fast and fell in love with him.
Bull finally realized that he is capable of feeling like a normal human being and can grieve the love of his brother and still get his revenge.
The series was just soooo good!

ARC kindly received in exchange for an honest review.
This book. This duet. These characters.
IN LOVE.
Only having met Monica James with Bullseye, I’m still new to her writing and to her work. But my gosh, I was hooked immediately and with Blowback, it’s only gotten better! She weaves such a harsh, intense, brutal tale together with ease, but it’s incredibly delicate as well. So many players moving across the board, all it takes is one wrong move for it all to come down.
A man like Cody “Bullseye” Bishop should come with his own warning label. He’s raw, dangerous, and unapologetic. And Lily, what a woman. Fierce, unafraid, and willing to do whatever it takes to keep her family safe. Both of them have grown so much since we met them and it isn’t at the expense of the other, but because of them. They may not have always been side by side, but don’t be fooled into thinking that one is ever without the other.
The best thing about this duet is that it all comes down to one common thread… love. Everything happens because of love; pure, brotherly love… toxic sibling love… even the blossoming love between two people who, on paper, should stay far away from each other.
There’s plenty of darkness in this book, viciousness and sadistic crimes aplenty. But there’s also passion, redemption, and completion. It’s an in-your-face, raw, gritty story about one man’s path of vengeance and how the ripple effect is very real.
The Monsters Within duet is dark and unmerciful, but it’s also beautiful to watch as it unfolds. You’ll fall in love with Bull and Tiger, with Cody and Lily.
All the stars in sky for Monica James and her brilliant storytelling.
This was amazing! The twists and turns, the angst, the suspense, and the growth the characters go through had me on edge the whole time reading. You have to read Bullseye before reading this but it’s so worth it. I felt I was there and I could feel every emotion that I felt drained after finishing reading, but my heart was happy.
The darker it gets, the better this book becomes!
‘Blowback’ by Monica James is the continuation and the grand finale we have all been waiting for (and drooling after) of ‘The Monsters Within’ duet!
That’s right y’all, Bull and Tiger are back with an epic and explosive story that will consume your dark soul in one big bite.
‘Bullseye’ was the beginning of this story, it was the book that got us to love and know these characters, the one that made us just a little bit darker with each chapter, the one that left us hanging for more.
‘Blowback’ is just as crazy and as dark as the first book but better. This book is insane and intricate, one where you will need to pay close attention to even the smallest of details to try and see what’s coming next.
This book is full of violence and action, an unpredictable story that you can’t help but love, no matter how dark and bloody it gets.
Bull is the same grumpy and broody man he was, if not even worse. He is stuck between a rock and a hard place in a situation where he’d love to just say f**k it and end it all once and for all. But that isn’t a choice because he has people to fight for now. The only thing that differentiates him from other villains in this story is his slowly thawing heart.
Bull is still the dark knight in all of this, the man living for revenge and spilled blood, the beast everyone is scared of going against, the man who won’t stop at anything to protect those he cares about and avenge his brother’s death.
But on top of all that? He is human, a broken human who doesn’t know how to face his emotions, who will have to learn how to love and accept that he is worthy of life and even happiness.
Tiger, beautiful and strong Tiger. She has been a boss babe from the very beginning of time, she doesn’t cower or let people fool her, she is brave and passionate and caring.
She has been busting her **s off in order to provide for her kid but also to make her dreams happen, she is a true warrior who can’t be stopped.
Tiger will have to walk through the deepest and darkest corners of hell and back, getting burned way too many times and facing the Devil head-on, but that will only contribute to create the incredible and courageous woman that she is.
Their story is far from easy and far from conventional, but it is real.
What I loved most about this book is how the author was able to capture and represent the realness and wickedness of this world.
She managed to stay true to her characters, never making them to be anything they were not, never changing the story in order to make readers happy and content.
This book will push your limits and push you through the darkness whether you want it or not, whether it makes you uncomfortable or you thrive on it. It doesn’t matter.
This dark and twisted story is unapologetic, making it one of those books that either breaks people apart or brings them together.
You’ll get an insight into the mind of every important player in this story, you’ll scream when things don’t go the way they’re supposed to and you will be left speechless when even the most unlikely of allies come through.
If you are willing to face the darkest of places, to dip your toes into a world of blood and vengeance, and to witness violence that is both wrong and right, then this is the book you are looking for.
There is no black or white in this book, here you’ll find a lot of grey areas but that is exactly what makes this book so good, the fact that no matter what villains stay villains, and trust me when I say, you will love this particular evil.
Rate: 4,5 / 5 stars
An epic, twisted, emotional, dark and sexy conclusion to Bull’s story! Wow what a ride. Lily surprised me a lot in this book… how soon she realised her brother’s true colors and how that made her change her whole viewpoint on everything going on, what she was willing to sacrifice for the ones she loved ooh. I really loved how strong, fierce and bada** she was.
Bull once again showed how much of a master mind he was, even though things didn’t go exactly according to plan… since there were additions to his life he hadn’t foreseen. He still managed to fool everyone and work all sides and in the end get help from someone unexpected and be able to enact his revenge, like he and Damien deserved. I’m so glad he got that. At one point I thought it would all have been for nothing and he wouldn’t be able to move on from that tragic event. Getting to relive that night again with him hit me right in the feels.
Blowback was an experience. There were a lot of scenes that had me emotional, saying goodbye to people who used to be your world, achieving the thing you’ve been dreaming for for years, finding someone who completely changed your view on love and life. These two gave me all the feels in this book and how it ended could not have been more perfect for them.
“With my heart in my throat, I get lost in those mismatched eyes, wanting to remain lost forever.”
The explosive conclusion to Bullseye was a road full of twisty turning, unexpected jaw-dropping action, suspense, and steamy happenings!! I ate it up with a spoon as I saw the events unfold and had absolutely no clue how it would end up. My little dark heart sang when these two went up against the world!! With my hands white-knuckling my Kindle, and my heart firmly stuck in my throat, I read it in one sitting to see what would come of Bull, Lily, and the decades long mission of revenge, and as the pages turned, I experienced every emotion, felt every pain, and was deeply intertwined in this couple’s story. SO MUCH WENT DOWN in this part that it will absolutely leave you reeling, but ending with a grin….I thank the Author for providing a copy to review!!
“We’re just Lily and Cody-two lost souls who found something beautiful in utter destruction.”

What can I say? Monica did it again, She blew my mind! This conclusion to the Monsters Within Duet was epic. All those twists and turns were holding me by a throat from first to last page. The constant anxiety about what else would happen prevented me from putting this book away. I can tell you that I liked this book more than the previous one. And I’m sad that this is the end of Bull and Tiger’s story. I really loved this couple and their emotional journey to happiness.
Blowback is book 2 in the Monsters within duet and Monica James didn’t pull any punches. She gave us an explosive ending to Bull and Tiger’s love story.
After a slow start after that epic ending of book 1, book 2 got down the the nitty gritty, with Monica James showcasing that dark romance is definitely what she excels at writing. Bull and Tiger’s story was raw, dark and sometimes downright painful and i was here for it.
The mystery and suspense will keep you on the edge of your seat, trying to fit the pieces of the puzzle together, the chemistry sizzled throughout the book between Tiger and Bull and I didn’t know whether I was coming or going from one chapter to the next.
If dark romances are your jam then pick up this duet today!!
Monica James never ceases to amaze me with her versatility as an author! Mama Monster is the boss of dark, twisty, action-packed romances. She pens strong women and silent, dangerous men like no other!
Bull is bigger and badder than before on his quest for revenge. However, in Blowback, we see a more complex version of him, and quite frankly, I didn’t realize how much I needed that! Colmillo made my heart race with his calculated violence while Cody gave me all the heart flutters.
In Blowback, Tiger is putting the pieces together quicker than others realize, but that shouldn’t be a surprise. She’s always been the strong, smart, self-assured heroine I love! I admired her in Blowback, although I wanted to snatch her by the hair a few times. I found myself staying, “what are you doing crazy?!”
Overall, I enjoyed this read! Monica James never disappoints. If you’re looking for a dangerously dark and delicious read, the Monsters Within Duet is for you!
Hello, Monica James? Hi, it’s me again. Uh, sorry to bother you, but I just wanted to let you know… I might need another Bull book, like ASAP. What about turning this duet into a trilogy, hum? *wink*wink* Okay, maybe not that; I’m here talking like I understand anything about writing and story/series structure and stuff… Just please consider bringing him back at some point. Please. Thank you.
Look, don’t get me wrong: this book – scratch that – this duet had EVERYTHING and then some. I absolutety loved every second of it, including and especially the resolution – that last chapter, oh my God – but you know me: I just don’t think I can say goodbye quite yet.
Both Bull and Lily went through so much; I just wanted to sneak a peek at their new found life and happy ever after.
Also – and I think it goes without saying – this obviously applies to every single character from every single Monica James’ book I’ve ever read: bring back anyone and everyone; I miss them all.
“Cough” Saint… Sorry, not sorry. ;D
Anyway, I’m going off on a tangent.
So, I cried my eyes out for roughly 4 hours, what else is new?
You might be thinking “that’s al lot of time to be crying” and/or “it took you that long to read this book?” and the answer is “yes” for both of those questions.
Yes, it’s a lot of time to be bawling and sobbing but hey, that’s Monica James for you all in a nutshell. And yes, it took me that long to read it. Also, those 4 hours are just a close estimate and only of the time I was truly devastated; I didn’t factor in the times I was nervously bitting my nails, or grinning like a maniac, or sweating and fanning myself like a whore in church… you get the idea.
If you’re interested at all, here’s a tidbit of info about me: I find that it usualy takes me more time to read a book that it was actually supposed to, considering the “about this book” section on Kindle. Mind you, this affects me none, but I’ve go it down to a few reasons: firstly, I’m portuguese, so english is not my first language and even though I’ve been reading mainly english written books for the past 6-8 years, sometimes I still come across a word I don’t know the meaning or right pronunciation of. That itself will lead me to pause the reading and go right to the dictionary or some helpful 5 second Youtube video. Also, the pacing of my reading itself still feels a little slower that if I was reading in portuguese and I guess it makes sense.
Now – and this is the real reason I wanted to tell about my reading process – when it comes to Monica James or any of my favorite authors’ books, I defintely read them slower. I think it’s half intentional and half unintentional but always for the same reason: I dont want them to end.
You can also blame some of that extra reading time on the extremely current event of blurry vision, you know… from crying hours on end. Yeah, that’ll do that to you.
So here we are and the bottom line seems to be “Monica James’ books will hurt you but you’ll enjoy the pain so much that you’ll drag it out, not wanting it to end and you’ll go running like a crazy person when she releases another one because you just can’t get enough”. Seems legit.
“Blowback” is a crazy ride; there is absolutely no time in each you’re not on the edge of your seat – you never know what to expect next. Monica James is a mastermind and this book proves it: all the connections betwween these characters, the web of lies, deceits, friendships and enmities, revenge, deaths and bloodshed; all of it was so masterfully created that after every scene, every new development, you’re left with this claustrophobic feeling and you want to either run fast and far away in hopes everyone will just forget that you ever existed, or curl into a ball in a dark corner and beg for the nightmare to end and for you to finally wake up.
I don’t think it really classifies as a spoiler if I say that all’s well that ends well.
That’s problaly the most non-specific way to put it because, a) duh, no spoilers and b) it’s not like you can really say “evil lost, good won”, not really. This is a Monica James’ book after all and in her worlds there no such thing as labels, linear uncrossable lines or black and white anything. And oh how we all have so much effing fun playing in these grey areas.
Bull was not and will never be just that one good boy turned hurt, angry man looking to avenge his brother’s death – it’s not that straightforward. Maybe we do all have both the light and the darkness inside of us. Maybe that “little angel and little devil on your shoulder” metaphor holds a little bit more thruth in it. Maybe it really does depend on what side of it or which one of them you feed. And that’s fine.
But what if being bad is not that… bad? What if some of us really do have a few demons and we’re supposed to learn to live with them instead of exorcising them and ridding ourselves of them? What if you’re stronger and happier and your true self with them inside of you? What if the world is really not supposed to be black and white and we’ve been mistaken all this time? What if the grey area is the right place to live in?
It’s all about morality after all, so I guess you choose what works for you. But don’t be fooled: darkness surronds us all. Some of us fear it and hide from it, some of us are curious about it and intrigued by it, some of us indulge in it from time to time and some of us live in it and for it. No matter which group you’re part of, at least acknowledge it you must. It demands so. She’s that powerful.
So don’t blame me for thriving on it or wanting it to last a little bit longer.
I know I said this before but Monica James was the first author I read dark romance from, and if the genre on its own is enthralling, engaging and long-lasting, Monica James’ brand is positively, 1000% addicting, “unputdownable” and unforgettable.
I truly don’t know what else to say at this point so I think I’ll just leave it here while repeating myself with something I probably say in every review: you freaking rock.
I’ll be here, obviously not so patiently waiting for more, like always.
Ooh by the way, can we have a Franca Brown book? That lady is such a badass.
Ok, I’m going now. Byeee.
Another great story by Miss James! I couldn’t put it down!
An intense and addictive conclusion to the monsters within duet…
“Every story has a hero. And it has a villain. But I guess in this story— you got both, wrapped in one.”
After the dramatic end to BULLSEYE we pick up right where we left off. But not for long…even though the hate it strong the desire is stronger and only a matter of time before they give in. Bull and Lily need each other far more then they realise when events take a turn for the worse!!!!
2 down 2 to go!!!
An absolute nail biting final part to a duet full of deception, betrayal and heartache a thrilling and intense read that keeps you hooked to the story with every turn of the page and fantastic characters that you either love or hate a very highly recommended duet.
The ending to this Duet was perfect! I think we were all rooting for Bull regardless of the things he has done.
Like I said in my review of Bullseye, this is not my normal type of read but it was surprisingly so good! I didn’t want to put the book down until I knew how it was going to end.
Monica keeps the story flowing and full of action so that you do not get bored while reading. It is definitely a gory and violent story so as long as that doesn’t bother you then you will love this Duet.
Blowback is the 2nd & final book in The Monsters Within Duet.
OMG y’all I am blown away with this story! It is powerfully good! I cried, I got angry and then happy again! I LOVE this Book, Series and AUTHOR. Monica James never disappoints me with her books!
It started out as revenge for Bull! And yes he does get his revenge but he also finds love along the way. Now can he protect his love and have his HEA? That will be up to the reader to find out!
Blowback is raw & gritty. I was so drawn into the story and I found I couldn’t put this book down until I got to the end. I can’t say enough good things about how I felt about Bull and Tiger Lily’s story.
What you should know as a reader. This isn’t a light hearted story. There are possible triggers in this dark story. But if you love a great dark story then this book is a MUST READ! But you need to read Bullseye first and if you are lucky you will have caught it on sale. As it is right now! Bravo, Bravo Monica James! I absolutely, effing loved this book!!! 10 + STARS
Monica James left me speechless with Blowback, so much so it’s taken me a week to be able to write this review. Monica James’ mind is dark, twisted, and I just want to crawl inside it. Bull and Lily are just amazing and Blowback was the perfect conclusion to their story.
Secrets, lies, revenge, love, and some hot AF sex, what else could you possibly want? Bull and Lily’s relationship is complicated and messy. At the end of book one after the bomb was dropped they ended their relationship, however the connection these two shared didn’t allow that to happen. Bull and Lily are like magnetics drawn to each other.
Blowback is phenomenal! Monica James had me hooked right from the start and I couldn’t stop reading and nor did I want to. I read this book in one sitting and I’m not even sorry. Blowback is thrilling and addicting, and a ride I never wanted to end. Everything about Blowback was amazing! The plot, and characters were fantastic written just amazing, Blowback was flawless! Everyone should meet Bull and Lily and read The Monsters Within Duet! 5 monter stars!
After finishing Bullseye I have been waiting for this one. I couldn’t wait to dive in and see how Bull and Tiger’s story would play out and boy, it was nothing like I was expecting in my mind.
Bull and Lilly’s relationship is not an easy one. It is full of ups and down, twists and turns and will probably give you whiplash, but it is worth EVERY SINGLE MOMENT! These two have some ridiculously hot chemistry and I love them together, but I also love them as individual characters. Lilly is strong, she isn’t some weak heroine. I love that she doesn’t back down easily, she is willing to fight for what she wants and who she loves. Despite the pain and suffering she used that has motivation. Bull is such a damaged hero, however, you can’t help but love him. To root for him.
This book and this duet are dark, twisted, addicting, hot, suspenseful, action packed, emotional, beautiful and everything you could want in a twisted dark romance. The quest for revenge brought these two individuals together, but that same quest can also tear them apart.
Blowback and Bullseye are MUST READS and this duet is one of my TOP READS of 2020. Prepare yourself for a dark, twisted world that will consume every single inch of your soul from the very first page.
Que the fan girl screaming! This book! This ending!!! I wasnt expecting such an amazing HEA! This whole book kept me grasped within its pages as the final showdown takes place as Bull gets his revenge. Is it beautiful, no, but it’s a bloody mess with carnage everywhere. A dark love story like no other because Moncia James does it like that!
I recieved an ARC in exchange for a honest review.
BLOWBACK is the second and final instalment in Monica James contemporary, adult THE MONSTERS WITHIN dark, erotic, romance duet focusing on former inmate, and bouncer thirty year old Cody ‘Bullseye’ Bishop, and twenty-eight year old, exotic dancer/ dance instructor Lily ‘Tigerlily’ Hope. BLOWBACK should not be read as a stand alone as it picks up immediately after the events and cliff-hanger of book one BULLSEYE.
WARNING: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be some triggers for more sensitive readers.
SOME BACKGROUND: Approximately fifteen years earlier, at the age of fifteen, Cody Bishop witnessed the murder of his older brother Damian by four wanna-be gang bangers, and our anti-hero pledged to kill everyone involved. Following the death of one of the men responsible, Cody would serve twelve years in jail where he would take the name Bullseye, excelling in the game of underworld fighting. Upon his release from prison, Bullseye vowed to kill the surviving three men but finds himself falling for an exotic dancer with connections to his past.
Told from dual first person perspectives (Bullseye and Tigerlily) BLOWBACK follows Cody ‘Bullseye’ Bishop as he continues to exact revenge on the people responsible for Damian’s murder. As Bullseye’s plan comes to fruition Lily will soon discover to what depths Bullseye is willing to go in an effort avenge the brother he lost. Playing both sides in a war between competing cartels, Bullseye unapologetically makes himself the target, willing to sacrifice his own life if it means saving the woman with whom he will fall in love but it is Lily’s past that will pose the greatest threat using our heroine in the process.
The numerous colorful secondary and supporting characters include the return of Bullseye’s parole officer Franca Brown; Lotus, the owner of The Pink Oyster; and several local gang-bangers and the men who rule the streets of Detroit- Jaws, Hero, Scrooge, Stevie and Kong, as well as Lily’s son Jordy. We are introduced to Stevie’s wife Bianca, Jose, and Bulleye’s young helper Paul Garrison.
BLOWBACK is a gritty story of betrayal, vengeance, murder and death; heart break and revelation; retribution and love. The premise is dark and raw; the romance is provocative, complicated and passionate; the characters are broken, dangerous, determined and deadly. BLOWBACK is a thought provoking look at vengeance, and to the depth of which one man is willing to go.
