Third book in the USA Today bestselling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series. In Bloody Lessons, the third book in the USA Today bestselling Victorian San Francisco mystery series, it’s the winter of 1880, and the public school teachers of San Francisco are under attack: their salaries slashed and their competency and morals questioned in a series of poison pen letters. Annie Fuller, the … Fuller, the reluctant clairvoyant, has been called in to investigate by Nate Dawson, her lawyer beau, and the case becomes personal when they discover that Nate’s sister Laura may be one of the teachers being targeted.
In this historical mystery, readers will find the same blend of a cozy mystery and romantic suspense that they found in Locke’s Maids of Misfortune and Uneasy Spirits. However, if new to this series, they will still enjoy spending time with the lively residents of Annie Fuller’s O’Farrell Street boardinghouse and visiting San Francisco when Golden Gate Park was filled with horse-drawn carriages, politics were controlled by saloon-keepers, and kisses were stolen under gaslight.
Bloody Lessons is followed by Deadly Proof, and Pilfered Promises, and Locke’s shorter works, found in Victorian San Francisco Stories and Victorian San Francisco Novellas, feature minor characters from the series.

I liked everything about this book. Ms Locke’s style of writing fits well with the educated reader which I so much appreciated. Characters are fully developed. Social issues of the time period are shown clearly. Although its called Bloody Lessons it’s more about the solving of the crime rather than dwelling on the blood and gore.
I like suspense and no blood bath books. This keeps you guessing.
Fantastic mystery. Loved it. I read the first one in this series and looked forward to reading this one. This one is as good as the first one. I was not disappointed.
I very much enjoyed reading about San Francisco in the Victorian Era and the position of women and teachers at that time. It was an eye-opener.
The third in the Victorian San Francisco mysteries is by far my favorite. The past two books had one mystery to solve and were neatly ended in Agatha Christie style. This one had me guessing the entire time; was Hattie pushed, who’s following Laura, are Seth’s intentions honorable, who is sending nasty notes to San Francisco’s teachers, and …
Another great read, second in the series. Just can’t seem to put it down.
Kept me guessing!
Enjoying all the books in this series!
Love the characters and aspects of historical fiction regarding life in San Francisco
Very good!
Wasn’t sure I was going to like this series, but had to keep reading to find out what happens next. Really liked the characters and to me was pretty realistic for the most part. Recommend this book and others in this series
Really like her work and the way she tells a story. 1st rate
One of my favorite authors, always enjoy another in this series.
Great series
Another great story in this wonderful historical mystery series!
The writing was a bit stilted but appropriate for that time period. Good character development.
Different. Taught me about the past.
I love these characters… and historically correct novels.
Great read
Always love these books – setting in victorian days so shows contrast of how things are “supposed” to be for women of the time and the … characters who are willing to push the boundaries in a “still respectable” way. Mysteries solved by asking good questions and listening closely. Well done – looking to more stories with same characters.
