Given the trainwreck my life has become, I’ve earned my cynical attitude. I’m trapped in a dead-end job at the Bear Butte County Sheriff’s Office—a position I took out of desperation after the brutal murder of my Lakota half-brother. Three years have passed, his case is cold, and my coping mechanisms—tequila, cigarettes and dubious men—no longer serve as excuses for my grief; they define who I am. am.
Welcome to my world—Julie Collins, harbinger of doom and a sucker for lost causes.
So when the body of a sixteen-year-old white girl surfaces and the death details are alarmingly similar to my brother’s murder, Kevin Wells—my best pal and local PI—admits he’d been hired to find the missing kid before she turned up dead.
I’m roped into helping Kevin tie up loose ends regarding the girl’s disappearance…and that’s when things begin to unravel. Lies are revealed. Bullets start flying. Yet nothing—not even death threats—will stop me from digging for the truth and finding the justice for this girl that my brother was denied.
But the killer is willing to kill again to make sure these secrets stay buried. And this time, I’m in the crosshairs.

Loved this book! Lori writes a great story!
Very interesting – Julie Collins is a very human being looking for answers and love along the way. Enjoyable.
Excellent murder mystery
Enjoyed the twists and turns
Fun read, nothing too heavy but still entertaining enough to keep you reading one book to the next
Good read
Would read more by this author. The book has threads of truth in the way we have treated native people.
Good book interesting characters. Will definitely read more in the series
Intense!
Messy characters. Nice to read about a different demographic
This book was ok, not much action.
The main character is a train wreck, but she’s completely original & totally compelling.
Not my usual read but different enough to keep me reading and looking forward to the sequel.
An okay book. Interesting local and some decent characters. Nothing really special, though.
Confusing, writing could be better
Great book, full of twists and unexpected turns.
It’s like you’re your best friend is doing a gig as a part-time private investigator and she tells you all about it, and her scumbag, child-endangering, white trash neighbor, and her really hot, best friend (wishing it was her BOYfriend), and her favorite and not-so-favorite watering holes, and her full time boring secretarial job.
Basically …
Julie is totally unlikable. She is so irritating, I want to slap her. She runs her mouth, smokes too much, drinks too much, and has sex with any lowlife she can find.
Julie Collins works as a secretary for the Bear Butte Sheriffs Office. She moonlights as a PI with her childhood friend, Kevin. A few years earlier, her half Lakota, …
