The encounter with the sinfully good Bas in the previous book had me excited that this was to be his own book. Bas is a lethal High Blood Assassin, but he has an Achilles’ Heel, his daughter. Now he might have just found a second weakness when Molly’s mother rushes back into his life bringing portents and prophesies of danger.
The Sentinels has proven to be an exciting, action-packed series with a unique paranormal twist on the immortals. Each book has a separate romance and situation and yet there is a clear series arc and a few ongoing stories in the background so I don’t recommend getting them out of order.
In this story, Bas has just retrieved Molly from her kidnappers and did his reluctant part to help the High Bloods of Valhalla stop a powerful evil, but now he wants to avoid the hero-types and get his life of a mercenary back on track. Unfortunately, that is not to be when Molly’s mother, Myst, returns to his life. They had one night together and then she ran only to return and leave the baby Molly with him. Now she wants time with their daughter. Bas isn’t in the mood, but then he senses something might be behind Myst’s behavior and he will have the secrets of this frustrating female who he never could forget.
Myst left behind her child to protect her and she left her with a man that even that short acquaintance has ruined her for other men. She knows what Bas thinks of her, but she had her reasons. She has been on the run and she wouldn’t allow Molly to be with her if she were recaptured. And then there is the foretelling she did that named herself as the one to unleash a weapon that would destroy her kind, the High Bloods.
She only planned to get in, make sure her child was safe, and get out, but Bas has other plans and he’s not allowing her to keep her secrets this time. Worse, he insists on helping her get all the answers so they can prevent the disaster she saw in her vision.
Alright, this one was a fast, easy read with an action-based plot. The players and situation are introduced and things race into motion from there. This is Bas and Myst’s story, but it is also a continuation of Lana, the Valhalla Mave leader and her lethal Tagos protector along with the situation in the Human First camp. I enjoy the inclusion of these other storylines. Everyone is rushing to figure out the secret about the ‘weapon’ of Myst’s foretelling and its like a treasure hunt with two teams of hunters.
As usual with the author’s stories, there is a blend of passion and action. The Sentinels concept like X-Men humans who are feared and hated by many non-gifted humans is a good one. I always enjoy what gifts will be the highlight of each new installment. The romantic pair are a rogue assassin with a magic gift and a foreteller with telepathy. I loved seeing Bas and Myst go from wary and suspicious to a pair who need each other and partner for what matters. Bas likes to pretend that he is all bad boy, but he really has a heart of gold even if he feels rules are optional. Myst has never know a home or acceptance so she is used to running and doing for herself. Loved watching her learn that there are good people who will help her.
The action wound down to an exciting end with some fun surprise twists and danger moments along the way. Always fun to see how the author will extricate her good guys from a tight spot. It was a rush to the finish and now I am left eager for the next installment.
I would recommend these for those who enjoy action-driven, heated, fast, and easy paranormal romance.
