Another great installment for Del and Sabrina!
When Sabrina is shot on a busy street, police suspect a deranged fan. But it soon becomes clear the bullet was meant for Del. The guilt he feels is soon joined by anger then curiosity when it appears the shooting is connected to Del’s murdered father, whom he was estranged from for most of his life.
The pacing is quick but smooth as more attempts are made on Del’s life as he tries to figure out why. He’s being followed by shadowy Chinese men, his homes are bugged, one of his homes is blown up—nearly killing Sabrina and Mo—he has to return to Fairfield… several times and the name of the mysterious John Bruno keeps popping up the deeper Del digs, even connected to his mother.
Though she’s healing from the gunshot wound, Sabrina is plagued with migraines from her head hitting the ground. With Del still recovering from the alligator attack—and subsequent injuries from the continued attempts on his life—the two are not 100%, but it doesn’t stop them from giving their all and being there for each other.
Relationships and interactions are as important as the mystery in the Lies Series, and the author does a good job with each in the story, but for me, the best… and most humorous, is the “friendship” between Del and Jack, who even share a man hug!
Del learns more about his father’s true nature during the investigation than he ever knew—or wanted to know–before his death, and how his selfish motives cost not only his life but could cost Del and Sabrina theirs.
I own digital copies of the Lies Series, but I keep coming back to the audiobooks because of the great narration! The narrator continues to do a great job of characterization without sounding cartoonish or robotic. His delivery of humor, sarcasm, suspense, or backstory is on point and kept me in the story.
While you’re sheltering in place, get to know Del Honeycutt, Sabrina Spencer, and their family of friends. I highly recommend this book and the series.
Enjoy!
Is is terrible to say I’m glad to see in the last 2 books of the series that the main characters didn’t always walk away harm free every time? It just seemed so unrealistic. Not that I wanted anything to happen to Dell, Mo, Sabrina or any of the other characters you get to know and like. This was a nice completion to the ongoing story about Dell’s father and who was following or trying to kill everyone. Nice series that I enjoyed. Great plots and just long enough to make a full story without excessive words that left you bored.
Good (interesting) story line.
It was definitely a page Turner
The plotting is fast and unpredictable but this may be because this is the first book of this series that I was reading. Many offbeat characters. The policeman seem to be more well-grounded and sensible than any of the recurring characters but don’t let that spoil the fun of reading this book. My reduction to 4 is that so many of the characters are injured in this book but again that may be the charm of it for other readers.
So many mysteries have similar story lines, but this one was more unique and more interesting. I enjoyed it very much!
I just love this series with Del and Sabrina, the cop Marsh, Mo and Jack. Sabrina is a very beautiful and intelligent woman writer with a past. Del became involved and fell in love and adventure with her looking into old crimes.
You don’t have to read them in order but it might help explain the relationships so you have a deeper understanding.
Sabrina is struck down by a bullet as she pushed Del out of the way. Everyone is wondering why Del. He’s not famous like Sabrina, his family was dysfunctional, he didn’t write the books about crime. .. the relationship between Del and Sabrina seems so real, honest and funny.
The fun starts when Del has to check into his Dad’s past ……his dad loved to hit on his students at the university, wasn’t a great father, and was caught cheating and shot dead. To top it off the FBI says he was a spy!! Del’s relatives have never been lucky or responsible or above bad behavior. Del and Sabrina investigate and are nearly killed several times…lots of action and humor and some genuine scares. The plot became confusing but worked out in the end.
This is a fun serues, well plotted, plenty of scares and laughs…would make a great tv series. A lighter but well written series that requires you solve the crimes with them. 4.4
!
I think I’ve said it all about Andrew’s books. If you haven’t read one I dare you to pick one up today!
most enjoyable…fast moving, mystery. intrigue. what more can I ask for?
This is part of a series, but you don’t have to read the previous books to enjoy this one. However, if you happen to read this one first, you will want to go and get the previous ones and read those as soon as possible! You get hooked on the characters and want to know more about them. Very well written.
A suspenseful thriller with twists and turns that kept me reading late at night. I enjoyed this book right up to the last page and recommend it.
Really enjoyable. Twists and turns were all believable.
BLOOD LIES (“Lies” Mystery Thriller Series Book #5) by Andrew Cunningham is the new book in the “Lies” series featuring Del and Sabrina. I enjoyed listening to the last book in audiobook format and I listened to this one, too. The mystery plot in all the books can be read/listened to as a standalone, but the characters evolve in each and I feel they are more enjoyable in order.
Del Honeycutt has just fully recovered from his and Sabrina Spencer’s last close encounter with killers and alligators. As they are walking down the street, there is a shot and Sabrina falls to the sidewalk. She is rushed to the hospital bleeding from her side and with a serious head wound.
When Sabrina wakes up and they are questioned by the police, they realize that the shot was meant for Del. Then the FBI shows up.
Del and Sabrina find out that there may be a link between the attempt on Del’s life and his father’s murder three years ago. Del is shocked to learn his father had a secret life. As they investigate, the clues lead them into more danger. More people end up dead. Could Del and Sabrina be next?
I enjoy listening to these books. They are entertaining mystery/thrillers with fun characters that I love to follow. Mr. Cunningham writes with a dry wit that can turn into a serious mystery scene and back again. The characters are all quirky and have very distinct voices.
Once again, I enjoyed Mr. Hernandez’s narration. He does a great job of bringing Del and the whole gang to life.
If you are looking for fun and quirky characters in unique and smart mysteries, this is the series for you.
Mr Cunningham develops his characters very well and the plot is unexpected. I couldn’t put the book down. Read all 5 in the series in three days
Easy to read and to spend time with book. I like books with more life depth and with more real situations and people, this one bands towards Hollywood.
Andrew Cunningham doesn’t disappoint. Characters are believable and storyline moves right along. Don’t want to put it down.
Very good!
good book will read more of those books
This book was truly an enjoyable read–unique without tipping to weird or pretentious. Fun!
Love this series. Each one a stand alone goodie.
