First let me state that I received an Advance Reader Copy, (ARC), but this in no way influences my review. I always leave an honest review. Also this author is new to me, and I hope it won’t be my last.
Holy shiznet!!! This story was gr8. First let me say, I was unsure if I’d truly like it because at the beginning it was slow & drawn out. I almost gave up, I was so bored. But I trudged through and at the half-way point it took off. I’m so glad I stuck with it. Don’t get me wrong, the writer knows exactly how to write a true picture of what you’re reading. I just have a tendency to get antsy. This book follows Second Nature, (which I haven’t read yet but will). And thankfully this story can be read without reading the other. I also like that this book ended with the possibility of another to follow. And I hope there will be another. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up
Blood Instincts is the second book in Lavender’s urban fantasy series Blood at First Sight. It can easily be read as a standalone novel, but there are definitely things that are referenced from the first book, so you might want to start there if you choose to dive in to the series. The main character, Myah, believes she is an orphan. She discovers during the course of the book that she is neither an orphan, nor fully human. With the help of Oliver (a vampire) she must come to terms with her new life and the realization that she has a specific and difficult role to play in the world she has just discovered. This book is definitely a transitional part of the story, linking the first book with the coming conflict of the third book. I enjoyed the story, the characters, and the different take on some of the more familiar and oft-used tropes of urban fantasy and paranormal romance.

Blood Instincts (Blood at First Sight #2)
Myah Sullivan is an accountant, quite guarded & doesn’t really trust or truly let people ‘in’. It stems from the sudden & tragic loss, when she was 12, of both of her Parents in a car accident! She had an idyllic childhood with them. Her Mum was an Author of Paranormal Romance & her Dad was an investor, he had a severe allergy to sunlight but they never let it spoil their family life!
Oliver King is an Artist. He travels constantly, he’s always restless. He spots a beautiful woman leaving a restaurant & is immediately drawn to her. Her whole being calls to him, not just her blood. This is a first for the 200+ year old Vampire. He also senses she’s ‘Other’ too but she’s either exceptional at hiding it or doesn’t know, the bigger surprise is he can’t place what she is! He realises he’ll have to educate her on the ‘Other’s’ and train her.
They meet a few days later under awful circumstances. He takes care of her & they decide to attend his gallery opening together. They’re both excited. As time goes by he slowly introduces her to a world she doesn’t know coexist’s all around her. Vampires, Magic,Shifters, Fairys & much more! It turns out she’s psychic & part Vampire too – this might be a step too far for her take, especially when she’s told by the Gypsy Witch that she’s A cosmic happy accident, and her kind is born to become warrior’s for the Others in a war that’s coming again to their World!!,
The storyline of the Other’s & what they stand for is solid & an interesting take on this trope. I was excited to learn her heritage etc The romance was a little out dated for my preferences but suited Oliver. The steam was good but became repetitive. It’s a decent read overall but it was so slow going!! If it had been edited down it could have made a wonderfully fast paced & exciting novella, Instead it’s couched in repetition which made it sluggish & overly long – For me!! There are many high points though, that needs to be stressed!
