The holidays just got interesting. Too bad this case may drive Ivy mad before the New Year. Heck, she’ll be lucky to survive Christmas.

As promised in my review of SHADOW SIGHT, I immediately dove into the holiday novella “Blood and Mistletoe.” I am really impressed with the research E. J. Stevens has done into the lore of monsters and fae. One of the things you can do when you read on Kindle is look up any word or phrase with which you are unfamiliar. I will confess that, although I am an avid reader of genre fiction, and have been for more years than I care to count, some of the names of creatures have been entirely new to me. They are NOT new to dictionaries and Wikipedia. In addition, this piece provides a pronunciation key and a description of all the beings about which she writes. I really wish more writers in the realms of fantasy and science fiction would do the same.
In “Blood and Mistletoe,” we learn more about our heroine and her closest associates in Harborsmouth. Once again, our psychic detective is on the case, and on the side of good and justice. I am loath to give details about Ivy Granger because that would be a major spoiler that you, the reader, need to uncover for yourself. Would it be telling to say that she is not exactly what she seems?
I liked Hunting in Bruges so much that I grabbed this novella by the same author. Now I’m going to work my way through the whole Ivy Granger series. It’s awesome to discover a new author that I enjoy.
Another excellent book from the Ivy Granger series. I’m loving this series more and more, as I get to know the characters better and their relationships with each other. It’s a small intimate, group of close friends who really care about each other, their community, and the people who live there. They’re committed to each other, and the need to keep paranormal incidents to a minimum. All while being their sassy, quirky selves.
There are a few more, sort of friends around now. A Demon name Forneus, that apparently likes Jinx. The feeling isn’t reciprocated. So, they go round and round. Ivy’s boyfriend, Ceff the kelpie king then, Jenna a human, paranormal hunter.
In this episode Marvin the sweetest Troll disappears, at a very inopportune time. Since there is a serial killer about. Her name is Leanansídhe a mage, working with red hats.
So, Ivy is off to try and save the town once again and hopefully Marvin. So, Ivy calls in Jenna one of the hunter’s to help her. Let’s just say they walk into MUCH, more than they bargained for!!!
It’s also the Christmas season and Kaye is throwing a solstice party, clothing optional. It should be quite an interesting party. Especially with all the different paranormal beings. Ceff brings Ivy a gift, the best gift he could have ever given her. She is very happy and giddy over this gift. I look forward to seeing how she uses it.
I just can’t get enough of these books, there funny, gory, written with style, sass and attention to detail. Always, leaving you wanting more. Needing to find out what happens next, with these quirky, sassy and truly entertaining characters. With each book, you see the characters grow, and evolving. Truly a treat to read.
I was given a copy of this book from the Author, I reviewed it on my own.
E.J. Stevens
Ivy Grainger is a snarky supernatural detective always ready with a tongue-in-cheek description or comment that will provide constant entertainment while reading this book. I rather enjoy reading this author’s work as it constantly keeps me smiling throughout the book and gives me the giggles when the goryness of the story would otherwise make me nauseous. I would advise all those who read this book to not have anything to eat or drink at least a good hour or two before reading or you may want to carry around a barf bag with you.
Blood and Mistletoe (Ivy Granger #1.5), my fourth read from author E.J. Stevens and my third Ivy Granger read. Well-written with intriguing characters. I got the book back in November of 2017 and never got around to reading it until I was given an Audible copy of this book & now I’m voluntarily reviewing it & since I own both the Audible & Kindle editions I was able to follow along while being read to. Melanie A. Mason & David Wilson Brown’s narration added to the well-written book’s enjoyment. E.J. Stevens is rapidly becoming a go-to author for me! (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
This is an entertaining holiday season novella where Ivy has to use her unique gift to tract down a serial killer who is murdering Fae and leaving mistletoe at the crime scene. The duel narrators of the audiobook each did nice job and they fit the characters well but the difference in the physical recording between the two narrators is distracting.
paranormal, urban-fantasy, private-investigators, hunters, verbal-humor, friendship, suspense, action
Someone is killing fae in Harborsmouth and that’s definitely not a good thing, especially at Christmas time when there are a lot more humans in town. Ivy can’t touch anything or anyone without gloves on or she gets crazymaking visions, but she is the one who is tasked with investigating and ending the threat. She has many friends and some can help, but others must be protected. Great book whether you’ve read others in the series or not!
Two narrators! Melanie A Mason and David Wilson Brown are an amazing team!
I won the audio in a giveaway! I win!
