A sweet and steamy New Adult Romance from author of the bestselling Ruthless People series, J.J. McAvoy… After an erotic one-week fling with a musician she meets in a bar, Thea Cunning never expects to see Levi Black again. Then Monday morning comes around, and she discovers that her former lover is not only her professor, but he’s also one of the top criminal lawyers in the state of … of Massachusetts.
With everyone in class vying to be one of the twelve disciples–a group of twelve students that Professor Black takes under his wing–tensions run high. Thea considers dropping his class, given their passionate week together and their undeniable chemistry. After all, there are other (less infuriatingly sexy) law professors on campus.
But to accomplish her goal and get her father out of prison, Thea knows she needs to learn under the best of the best–and that’s Levi Black.
But can she learn under the best, without being under the best?

This book and author were recommended by a friend. I should have read it the moment she told me about them. From page one I was completely captivated by Thea and Levi’s story. It evolved into so much more than being only about them. Absolutely fantastic and sexy and definitely kept me on the edge of my seat. JJ McAvoy is a brilliant storyteller and I cannot wait to read more of her work. If you haven’t read this yet, you’re missing out.
Damn Good Read-
First time reading this author. I don’t know how she has never shown up on my radar, but I’m glad she finally did. This story is just superb. The only reason I didn’t give 5* is due to editing. This was a fantastic read. The hero and the heroine were likable and had serious chemistry and the plot was engrossing.
“There are people who are moved by the world, and then there were people who moved the world.”
I have had this books for a few months now on my bookshelf and finally decided to crack it open. I am so glad that I did because the moment I started the book I was hooked. Then again I shouldn’t have been surprised since every book J.J. writes reels me in right away.
We meet Levi and Thea, two strangers that meet at a bar and sleep together. What they thought would be just a one night stand turned into a week of being with each other. During that week they were attached to the hip, learning about each other and of course having sex.
Levi, is one of the best criminal defense attorneys in Boston, plays the guitar and is also a Harvard professor.
Thea, is an aspiring lawyer who is attending Harvard Law in order to become a lawyer. Her goal is to get her father out of jail and who better to learn under than Levi Black.
Sleeping with your professor, even though you didn’t know at the time, is a difficult situation. We follow Levi and Thea’s back and forth as student and professor and lovers. When certain bombs get set off in their personal lives we see how they deal with clearing it up.
I absolutely loved Levi Black and Thea Cunning and seeing their relationships in the law world and personal life. If you have not read this book you should definitely take the time and do so because you will love it.
I read this book back in 2018 and it was one of my first books from this author. Since then, JJ got me really curious about her writing and her stories.
Reading all about Thea and Levi was really fun and they’re such amazing characters. I loved how they story started and how they found each other again.
When Thea and Levi meet at a bar, they have an immediate connection. Both aren’t looking for anything serious, but want to explore the attraction further and agree to spend a week together. When the week ends, they go their separate ways but are surprised to see each other in the last place they expect. Levi was a force to reckon with and am amazing lawyer. Thea was smart, strong, and stubborn. She had to prove herself to save her loved ones. Many twists & turns, and maybe one too many coincidences, but I loved Black Rainbow.
A rainbow read!
To accomplish her goal and get her father out of prison, she knows she needs to learn under the best of the best—and that’s him…
But can she learn under the best, without being under the best?
Oh wow…this book sucked me right into its pages from the very first word! Then I was hooked for life! (And I’m so happy there is an HEA novella! *happy dance*).
The writing is phenomenal. The story is phenomenal. The characters are phenomenal. Overall, this book is phenomenal.
Sigh, it felt like it ended too quickly but as I said above there is a novella so I can’t wait to jump into that book next!
Full of pain, emotion, steam, laughter, happiness, family and love.
Perfect for readers of contemporary romances.
Thea doesn’t let people in. Ever. So a week long fling with a sexy man named Levi and it’s without strings attached? That sounded perfect to Thea. But that blissful week ended and Thea can’t seem to get Levi out of her mind and she can’t call him or see him again. They had an agreement. So Thea goes on with her life. The last thing that she ever expected was to see her temporary lover standing at the front of her law class. Can Thea pass this class without caving and can the rule-abiding Levi keep his distance?
I’ve read a few teacher/student love affair books and to be honest, I’ve only enjoyed one of them. When I saw Black Rainbow, I was wondering if I would enjoy it because the probabilities were not in its favor. But I was surprised. VERY surprised. I didn’t expect the book to be about so much more than just a taboo affair.
You know, I’m a bit hard on flawed characters. But that’s only because I really love a flawed character. I don’t find it amusing to read about people who are perfect because no one is. I’m as screwed up as the next person and I want to read about someone digging themselves out of an impossibly deep hole, in the dark, with snakes raining down on them. I want the struggle and the drama and most of all, I want a character that will fight for what they want. So. Thea is that perfectly flawed character. She wasn’t screwed up enough to make me think that things would never be better, she had these things wrong in her life and she knew how to fix them but she also knew that the road to that change wouldn’t be easy or even possible. It is neat watching that caterpillar to butterfly type of transformation. And Thea wasn’t the only one who went through that, there were a couple of other characters that had the same type of change and that was interesting as well to read about. And Levi … while he wasn’t as screwed up as I would have hoped, he was a strong male lead that I really enjoyed getting to know within these pages.
I was really chugging along with this book. I read it pretty quickly because it just kept me interested. It kept me wanting more, which is what the definition of an amazing book is … IMHO. Anyway … so I’m scooting through these pages and I’m almost done and then BOOM! I was totally blindsided by something that happened. It happened to close to the end that I really had to go back and reread to make sure that I had actually experienced what I thought that I did. Man. I’ve never read anything by McAvoy before but I will now. She is a really talented author that everyone should be reading. Black Rainbow was just so good.
