Characters are slowly but well developed through the book. The first book in this series gives foundation and background for the main characters; but there is still much details to learn. This technique gives you something to look for in the coming books but not to the point this smothers the actual mystery, suspense. The actual murders are puzzling for the “why,” even though Quentin Black is pretty sure of the “who” as the story develops possibly the “why.” The murders in book 1 are ritualistic, leaving a unique symbol cut into the body with what looks like a possible religious/sect symbol.
Miri Fox is a forensic psychologist and has a gift reading people. Quentin Black is a “seer.” The story is a mystery, a thriller, and lightly science fiction (maybe more Sci-Fi in later books). Miriam Fox has a military background; she works with the local SFPD and a few she worked with in Afghanistan. Black is suspected of being the Wedding serial killer. Miri has a most unusual first face-to-face contact with Black in chapter 2 in an interrogation room.
Miriam Fox and Quentin Black, of course, are featured in each book of the series, but each book has a separate mystery. The relationship between Ms. Fox and Black further develops through the series (sneak peak at description of box set).
Three words: I am hooked. The powerful and steamy love between Dr. Miriam Fox and Quentin Black has me racing through this dark and gritty paranormal romance couple series.
While the bad guys change, and there is a different mystery/suspense plot in each book, the couple’s story is a slow burn, culminating in a romantic relationship over the series.
But what they must do to get together, well, all I can say is “Wow!”
Both seers (psychics) and vampires are featured, and the world-building is superb. Highly recommended!
4.5 Stars
I love Quentin!
Wow from another dimension and pure elitist theories, this book draws you in and keeps you guessing from start to finish.
Quentin Black is a seer and the main suspect of being in a serial killing, he is mysterious. Miram (Miri) is a forensic psychologist and unknown to her, is also a seer. There is instant sttraction between the two of them, but Miram is engaged to Ian, who is a cop trying to solve the serial murders along with a friend, Nick. Nick is solely convinced Quentin is connected to the mystery murders but Miram doesn’t feel he’s the killer, he doesn’t fit the profile in her psychologist role, even if he does share some similarities. But you’ll be shocked to know who the killer is.
It is well written, it has interesting and complicated main characters, which are not perfect, it has nice side characters, it has a complicated interaction between the main characters which is not really a romance, more a get to know each other type.
Black in White has mystery, tension, action, and plenty of questions to keep the pages turning. It was a 5-star read for me, and I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series. As this is one of the best books that I have read this year. Don’t miss it!!
Excellent story. In 2015 reading My only real issue is the editing could be tighter. Overuse of though(t), either, and that made the reading distracting, especially when duplicate words were used close together. The plot and characters were a solid win. I’ll be reading more of the series! Re-read in 2018, didn’t notice editing this time, which implies the author made have cleaned up the edit, or I was so engrossed I read right over any minor errors. Still a winning read, even the second time around.
Complex world, rich story, fabulous characters!
“Black in White“ is the first book in JC Andrijeski “Quentin Black” Series about psychic detective Quentin Black and his partner Miri Fox. The series is set in a version of Earth very similar to ours, with a slight difference: paranormal and alien races exists among humans. Quentin Black himself is a seer, who has arrived through a portal to this version of Earth, from another even darker version, where seers like him are subdued as slave to humans.
Miri Fox, a police profiler, meets Quentin Black in the course of an investigation of a serial killer case in the city. Initially Black is interviewed as POI and his connection to the case is unclear. As the investigation runs it course, their relationship evolves and some of the mystery about Black character is lifted.
JC Andrijeski has created a brand-new world, much like ours and deeply alien at the very same time, with interesting characters, that captivate our attention page after page. This is a wonderful adult urban fantasy series, with the emphasis being on “adult”, it is a series for mature readers, that crave full dimensional characters and good stories, with a good side dish of action and entertainment, and enjoy following the evolution of the main characters through a wide story arc.
If you’ve not read any Quentin Black stories you are in for a treat. These are the epitome of paranormal urban fantasy mystery tales. Stand alone tales which also fit into a fantastic story arc. Black in White is the first of these, in which you meet the series stars, Quentin Black and Miri Fox. I don’t want to give too much away bit what happens to these characters over the course of this series is, well, epic, and it all starts with this utterly fantastic story. I envy the journey newcomers are about to embark on.
Miri Fox is a psychologist who also works as an on/off profiler for the police. They believe they have caught the “Wedding Killer” but when she checks him out Quentin Black claims to be hunting the killer too. He is nothing like Miri expects and she becomes determined to work out what his secrets are. However Black confronts Miri about her “insight” into people and she gets pulled even further into the game to catch the killer and also as a result into Black’s world. Can Miri cope with the doubts and fascination with Black as well as handling the views from her best friend (who is a homicide cop) and her own boyfriend who works in intelligence.
WOW – loved this story. The story was intense and the building fascination between Miri and Black was quite lovely at times The relationship between Miri and her boyfriend seemed as if it wasn’t anything special and I think when she meets Black no one else had a look in. There was lots of action, twists and turns in the story that kept me gripped and reading faster as I got further into the story and became more hooked. I can’t wait to see how this develops in the next book of the series.
There was a slight crossover with the Bridge and Sword World series of books from the same author as they both feature seers.
Not for the faint of heart. Paranormal meets hard-boiled thriller. First book in a lengthy series. I read them all.

Give me a clever mystery that keeps me guessing until the big reveal and I’m in heaven. Bonus points if I’m still guessing at that point. There is so much going on in this book that it’s really easy to lose track of what are the important clues. And the chemistry between Miri and Black is pretty distracting too. I’m thoroughly hooked for the rest of the ride now.

When I first read this, I hadn’t read any of the Bridge & Sword books. I didn’t realize just how many “inside jokes” I was missing without that context. This book is so much better with an understanding of that added layer of meaning in the plot.
This was a great book. I fell in love with Quentin and Miri. The world is unique and haunting. Such a fun read. I had a hard time putting it down.
J.C. Andrijeski has written a sci-fi romantic thriller. She sets her scenes with sweeping descriptions of place and mood. J.C. develops her characters fully, both psychologically and physically. At the end she levels you wanting to read more.
Oh, my. This is an incredible thriller! At the very beginning, it threw me on a world class roller coaster and kept me there right through the last page!! Quentin Black and Miri Fox are both terrific!
The first in a fascinating and enjoyable new series, the Quentin Black Mystery series. The most fascinating aspect of the book is that the story changed genres in a most unexpected way as it progressed. It starts as a mystery, when the “Wedding Killer” is arrested, and the police call in Miri Fox, a psychologist with an unusual ability to read people, to come and consult. The book takes on a paranormal aspect when the suspect, Quentin Black, is able to communicate mind-to-mind with Miri, in a way no one else has done, and we find out that the secret of Miri’s ability to “read” people is that she can read minds. This allows Miri to know that Quentin is innocent, and despite being best friends with one of the cops who believes Quentin is guilty, and being engaged to an intelligence officer, Miri takes off with Quentin to search for the killer. A paranormal-romance aspect develops in the book as they chase the killer and spend time together; and eventually it grows into a sci-fy style book as it turns out that Quentin is from another dimension, that although Miri has no memory of it, he believes she must be related to his dimension, and that the killer they chase has come from that dimension and can possibly escape by jumping between dimensions. As I describe it, it sounds like a hot mess, but it’s a tremendously enjoyable, action-packed, mystery-murder-betrayal filled book; and I enjoyed the story and the characters enough that I ordered the second book immediately.
