Bitter Roots (Book 1 of Bitter Root Mysteries) Murder in a small town is always personal.Dispatcher Zak Waller prefers working behind the scenes in the Sheriff’s Office of Lost Trail, Montana, but when a newcomer to the sparsely populated town is brutally murdered—and the Sheriff is quick to pin the death on an unknown outsider—Zak starts his own private sleuthing. On the surface Lost Trail is a … sleuthing.
On the surface Lost Trail is a picture-perfect western town, offering a simple way of life revolving around the local ranches and ski hill. But almost everyone has a secret to protect, and no one knows that more than Zak. He’s part of a younger generation hoping to revitalize the town. But evil has dug in deeper than he knows.
Perfect for fans of the British television film, Broadchurch.

Loved the characters. Felt like they were friends and associates.
Really an easy story with well developed characters. Lots of twists. A good mystery. Looking forward to the next one.
I grew up in the Bitterroot Valley, in the towns of Hamilton and Stevensville, it was fun to hear Hamilton mentioned.
Enjoyed my first book by this author. Made me want to read more to see if Zak continues to apply his mind to ‘connecting the right dots’. Realistic characters we can all recognize in people around us.
Got involved with the characters which kept me very interested. Great story…I really enjoyed it.
Good story line, hard to put down. Enjoyed the characters. Had to buy the next book in the series.
Suspenseful util the end
Enjoy author CJ Carmichael. Keeps you wanting more.
Interesting and would like to read next in series.
The only sharp tack in the drawer is held in the background, until… Hey, it’s a great read, don’t want to put it down. Solid characters and likely situations that bring out the best. I’m hooked on the series.
Tiff returns to Montana and her family’s Christmas tree farm. She returns to the grief of loosing her father and younger brother along with the embarrassment of being fired from her job as a CPA in Seattle and having her boyfriend walk away. Tiff is suspicious of changes taking place in her community and uncertain about the “friendships” she left behind. Several interesting subplots develop as Zak investigates Riley’s murder; Justin, Willow and Geneva struggle with identity; Derick, Aubry and baby Brody struggle with family bonding and a questionable adoption.
This deputy was so much better then the people he worked for and really got you thinking.
I’m looking forward to learning more about these characters.
Well-written.
A really good book could not put it down, can’t wait to read book 2.
The book was compelling and easy to follow and had several interesting twists. It was well written and made the reader wonder why Zak, the real solver of the crime refused to accept the praise he so richly deserved.
Looking forward to reading next book if I can find a deal on it.
Really enjoyed this book, got the second as soon as I finished it and can’t wait till the third.
Easy read and predictable.
Characters seemed very real with a good story as well. The good thing is that there are two more books in the series.
