Birdsongs is a fast-paced mystery centered on former FBI agent, Benny James. Fired from the FBI for inadvertently sleeping with the perp in a murder case, he tries to disappear to a houseboat and retirement. Not having what it takes to relax, Benny starts a service offering discreet investigations. That is until a body is found crucified near his marina. The local police department requests … requests Benny’s help and he knows if he can catch the killer, redemption is his. The Chief gives Benny and the department ten days to solve the crimes before he promises to request the help of the FBI.
As the case grows, grabbing national attention, and the murders continue, the media soon fills the normally quiet town. Media goddess, Rachael Martin arrives and adds spice to an already flavorful mix.
A few newcomers straggle in as well. An ex-convict fresh out of prison from a thirty year murder rap slinks in unnoticed with revenge on his mind. Days later, a Greyhound bus delivers a strange young man raised by deaf-mute parents from deep within the Ozark Mountains. An old newspaper clipping and a dark secret pulls him to town.
Whatever is going on has something strange to do with birds. At each murder site, dead birds are displayed in disturbing ways—the killer arranging them as an artist might.
All the strange occurrences and unexplained visitors to this quiet town press Benny James to his max as he vehemently struggles to solve the most important case of his life.

I like a good murder mystery, but WOW! This one hit the spot! I usually manage to figure out who the killer is at least halfway through the book, but I have to admit this one caught me by surprise. I was totally off base by the wrong murderer. I think that’s why I liked it so much. It didn’t get boring and mundane as a result of knowing what the …
Intense! Suspenseful! Scary! I really enjoyed this book. It had interesting characters that seemed real and interesting twists and turns that had me holding my breath.
True mystery story with great editing.
Were it not for the abundance of foul (no pun intended) language throughout this novel, Jason Deas’ could easily add several feathers to his cap with this first mystery “Birdsongs.” The protagonist is a forced-into-retirement FBI agent, Benny James. Benny is asked to help in the investigation, but has a time limit of 10 days to solve four murders …
A very enjoyable read. Flowed well, didn’t get bogged down and ended the way a good read should end.
Serial killer on the loose. Great characters with a little romance. I liked the ending.
Would’ve given 6 stars if possible
Decent plot and characters, keep me entertained and intrigued enough to make it worth the time spent. I’d rather have given it 3.5 but that’s not an option. Good enough.
Loved this boo!!
I sure didn’t see the ending coming
this book was easy to get into and provided some interesting themes. some parts were a little off the wall, but they do call it fiction for a reason.
Was a book you keep reading to figure out who the murderer is. Keeps you looking for clues about who the killer is.
I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. I especially liked the way the crimes were solved and the interplay of the characters.
Had a few twists and turns that made it interesting. One of the main characters was a bad guy but was painted with a sympathetic brush
Author takes you out in left field a bit but not bad.
I liked this book and the characters. I will be ordering the 2nd book in the series.
My husband read this first and told me I had to read it also. I loved it just as much. Neither of us could figure out who-done-it. Can’t wait to read his follow up books.
Very good even great in my humble opinion one of the best I’ve read in a while
Kept me guessing- I’m ready for more Benny James
Not particularly well written with stereotypical characters and a far fetched plot.
