Now a Netflix film starring Sandra Bullock, Trevante Rhodes, John Malkovich, Sarah Paulson, and Rosa Salazar!
Written with the narrative tension of The Road and the exquisite terror of classic Stephen King, Bird Box is a propulsive, edge-of-your-seat horror thriller, set in an apocalyptic near-future world—a masterpiece of suspense from the brilliantly imaginative Josh Malerman.
Something is … brilliantly imaginative Josh Malerman.
Something is out there . . .
Something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from.
Five years after it began, a handful of scattered survivors remain, including Malorie and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, she has dreamed of fleeing to a place where they might be safe. Now, that the boy and girl are four, it is time to go. But the journey ahead will be terrifying: twenty miles downriver in a rowboat—blindfolded—with nothing to rely on but her wits and the children’s trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. And something is following them. But is it man, animal, or monster?
Engulfed in darkness, surrounded by sounds both familiar and frightening, Malorie embarks on a harrowing odyssey—a trip that takes her into an unseen world and back into the past, to the companions who once saved her. Under the guidance of the stalwart Tom, a motely group of strangers banded together against the unseen terror, creating order from the chaos. But when supplies ran low, they were forced to venture outside—and confront the ultimate question: in a world gone mad, who can really be trusted?
Interweaving past and present, Josh Malerman’s breathtaking debut is a horrific and gripping snapshot of a world unraveled that will have you racing to the final page.

I read this ages ago and wasn’t at all surprised when I heard it was being made into a movie (which I haven’t seen yet): it’s just that kind of book. It is mysterious, suspenseful, seriosly creepy, and has a strong heroine. I loved it.
This is the story of a world thrown into madness by an unknown/unscene entity. If people look upon this entity they are said to witness something that drives them mad and drives them to kill themselves. Soon, people are shutting themselves indoors, darkening their windows, and blindfolding their eyes if they dare venture outside.
Malorie …
Loved it!,
BIRD BOX! What a blast!
Tension filled and atmospheric, while not being altogether believable. I’m glad I finally read this and I’m looking forward to watching the film on Netflix next month.
enjoyed this book and characters
This book got my attention immediately and I finished is in one reading. It is the story of a pregnant wOman who survived tragic circumstances when an unknown entity makes people want to commit suicide. The book is very unnerving and has the reader on the edge of their seat. The end is satisfying. Scary!
Lots of unanswered questions.
Very well written and unpredictable. Couldn’t put it down. Have not seen the movie and probably won’t because the book was so good.
Y’know, when I read this (I at least finished it, although now I cannot remember the ending.) I do remember thinking several times that this would not make a good film.
Huh!
Haven’t seen the film…..though and don’t plan to.
The only recommendation I have is if you read the book, dont watch the movie. Loved the book, but the movie was a big disappointment. It strayed too far from the book.
This book scared the hell out of me! Try it out if you like the walking dead or stories about the collapse of civilization

This book is well written. If you enjoy a well crafted tale, and won’t be too disappointed with an ending that leaves unanswered questions, I think you will enjoy and remember this book.
To me this feels like a suspenseful, creepy sci-fi, without the science, and with a big dose of horrifying circumstances. I …
Wow! Very strange book.
Full of tension, not too long, easy enough to sit and read in one day… more than entriguing enough to make it so you won’t be able to put the book down.
Suspensful and well written
This story was fantastic. It kept me on the edge of my seat. There were times when I would gasp in surprise or found myself so scared for the characters I didn’t want to turn the page to see if they were ok. It’s hard to read a book through your fingers like watching a movie but I found my hand creeping to my face like it would help the …
I’m reading this Post-Apocalypse novel for the second time, that’s how incredible it is. I recommend you check it out before the movie (with Sandra Bullock!) is released.
Awesome book! This was definitely one of those can’t-put-it-down stories that are a rare find. The premise is intriguing, but the author’s writing draws you in and you become the veritable “fly on the wall (or boat)”. It’s got plenty of suspense and a little bit of horror. I’ll be watching for more books by this author in the future.
The Bird Box by Josh Malerman is much more than a horror story; it is a cryptogram, an occult metaphor for whatever it is that stalks us, not just as individuals, but as a nation, or a species. What is that monstrous thing that frightens humanity so profoundly that most fear to face it?
As in The Day of the Triffids, The Bird Box focuses around …
In the spirit of the Halloween season, I’m catching up on my horror TBR. I feel as if a lot of horror is written by and for people who have never had to be afraid in their lives and think it’s fun to pretend to be scary/scared, which is not a style that works for those of us familiar with real terror. Bird Box is at the other end of the spectrum, …
