Now a Netflix film starring Sandra Bullock, Trevante Rhodes, John Malkovich, Sarah Paulson, and Rosa Salazar!
Written with the narrative tension of The Road and the exquisite terror of classic Stephen King, Bird Box is a propulsive, edge-of-your-seat horror thriller, set in an apocalyptic near-future world—a masterpiece of suspense from the brilliantly imaginative Josh Malerman.
Something is … brilliantly imaginative Josh Malerman.
Something is out there . . .
Something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from.
Five years after it began, a handful of scattered survivors remain, including Malorie and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, she has dreamed of fleeing to a place where they might be safe. Now, that the boy and girl are four, it is time to go. But the journey ahead will be terrifying: twenty miles downriver in a rowboat—blindfolded—with nothing to rely on but her wits and the children’s trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. And something is following them. But is it man, animal, or monster?
Engulfed in darkness, surrounded by sounds both familiar and frightening, Malorie embarks on a harrowing odyssey—a trip that takes her into an unseen world and back into the past, to the companions who once saved her. Under the guidance of the stalwart Tom, a motely group of strangers banded together against the unseen terror, creating order from the chaos. But when supplies ran low, they were forced to venture outside—and confront the ultimate question: in a world gone mad, who can really be trusted?
Interweaving past and present, Josh Malerman’s breathtaking debut is a horrific and gripping snapshot of a world unraveled that will have you racing to the final page.
more
Josh Malerman has done for the horror fiction novel what Alfred Hitchcock did for horror films. The most frightening evil is the one you cannot see.
Just awful. Characters you don’t care about on a mission you don’t care about (because you don’t care about the characters).
I loved this book. Fast paced and much better than the movie.
I still haven’t seen the movie. I read it because my friends and family were talking about the movie. I found the book to be intriguing. An incredible tale that will have your heart in your throat. Very well thought out plot and strong characters. I definitely recommend it to anyone interested.
From what I understand the book is slightly …
I would have liked a little more character development on some of the others in the house as well as more about the safe house. The ending felt forced. Overall it was a good read. I read it in one sitting.
Wow! This was one of the best books I’ve read in a while. I could not put it down!! If you haven’t seen the Netflix movie yet, READ THE BOOK FIRST. It is sooooo good. The story was original and kept me guessing. I will definitely check out this author’s other books. Awesome.
I usually read a few pages of a book before going to sleep. This is the first book in a long while that kept me awake. It build and builds. I’m. It a sci-fi person and I’m. It sure that this was sci-fi but it had shades of sci-fi but it was done so well it didn’t turn me away to say the least! It still sticks with me and it’s beem a month since …
Loved the plot, the whole concept of this book. Highly recommend it, but read the book before you watch the film.
Different but as good as the movie
I read this after watching it on Netflix, something I don’t usually do. Always read the book before. My goodness, answered my unanswered questions.
interesting, fresh plot line
Well, confession time: I cheated. Big time. I’ve watched this movie right after it was released on Netflix back in December. Netflix tends to turn books I didn’t know about into movies and somehow, I always end up watching them, not knowing they’re based on a book. And thanks to this fact, I’ve been introduced to a lot of amazing books, Bird Box …
I am not sure how to categorize this book. It’s a little bit sci-fi, apocalyptic, dystopian all rolled into one. Amazon lists it as a horror-thriller. Our book club is reading this as our October book to get into the Hallowe’en mood. The main character, Malorie, is living in a world that goes mad when it sees a “creature”. No one knows how this …
No explanations of why, or how. Exactly how you would experience it. The bouncing timeline takes some getting used to.
Story of a mother trying to get her kids to safety. Truly fictional account but good read. It kept you guessing until the very end.
Amazing book. Will never forget it! Best writing I have read in years!
Can’t put it down!
Characters not well developed. Slow moving. Anticlimactic ending.
Was not happy with ending. Felt there should have been more information provided regarding the objects creating all the fear and turmoil in this book
.
An almost silly theme—but suspenseful!
