Now a Netflix film starring Sandra Bullock, Trevante Rhodes, John Malkovich, Sarah Paulson, and Rosa Salazar!
Written with the narrative tension of The Road and the exquisite terror of classic Stephen King, Bird Box is a propulsive, edge-of-your-seat horror thriller, set in an apocalyptic near-future world—a masterpiece of suspense from the brilliantly imaginative Josh Malerman.
Something is … brilliantly imaginative Josh Malerman.
Something is out there . . .
Something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from.
Five years after it began, a handful of scattered survivors remain, including Malorie and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, she has dreamed of fleeing to a place where they might be safe. Now, that the boy and girl are four, it is time to go. But the journey ahead will be terrifying: twenty miles downriver in a rowboat—blindfolded—with nothing to rely on but her wits and the children’s trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. And something is following them. But is it man, animal, or monster?
Engulfed in darkness, surrounded by sounds both familiar and frightening, Malorie embarks on a harrowing odyssey—a trip that takes her into an unseen world and back into the past, to the companions who once saved her. Under the guidance of the stalwart Tom, a motely group of strangers banded together against the unseen terror, creating order from the chaos. But when supplies ran low, they were forced to venture outside—and confront the ultimate question: in a world gone mad, who can really be trusted?
Interweaving past and present, Josh Malerman’s breathtaking debut is a horrific and gripping snapshot of a world unraveled that will have you racing to the final page.

Deeply absorbing, if implausible. I really couldn’t put it down, though.
Such a great horror book, one of the best in recent times. The well scene still creeps me out.
I always prefer my horror stories to not reveal the monster as long as possible, and Bird Box does an incredible job of this. Not seeing and not knowing what they are or how they work is a huge question mark that pushed the story along. You feel for its …
Wonderfully original story.
Complicated
Much better than the movie!
Slow paced…I kept waiting for something to happen.
DON’T WATCH THE MOVIE!! BOOK IS A MILLION TIMES BETTER!!!
I had watched the movie with my husband before I knew it was a book. I’m glad to have had the reversal of my usual way of doing the book/movie thing.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Bird Box, and I look forward to the sequel that is coming in the future. Malorie’s row down the river with Boy and Girl was so nerve-wracking.
The housemates …
Haven’t seen the movie but couldn’t put down the book once I started it. And books are usually better than the movie anyway.
moved along at a good pace.
“…it’s better to face madness with a plan than to sit still and let it take you in pieces.”
Malorie was living with her sister in Detroit when the madness started. Reports from all over the world were saying that people were going crazy after seeing “something,” killing others and themselves. Windows are covered. Blindfolds are used. Then …
It kept me up all night reading, just trying to figure out all the twisted loops and turns. I loved it and wished it were a series.
Dystonian novel I found to be very upsetting. It was well written or it wouldn’t have upset me so much.
Very suspenseful and difficult to read as a parent. Loved the tension and slow burn Malerman packs into this story!
Underwhelming ending. The book was great at first. Then all of a sudden it was over and I felt cheated. It ended just as it was getting really good. My opinion is that this book is highly overrated.
Hair stood up on end—even watched movie first. MAKE SURE BEFORE YOU READ
I really loved this book.
Totally awesome book! I highly recommend it as a scary book. Not what you expect, and the twists and turns kept me on pins and needles. Loved it!
I loved this book, I kept thinking about it months after I read it. Read it, the movie is nowhere as good as the book.
I literally could not put this book down.
