A beautiful book for book lovers – as a voracious reader myself, I wished I could have found more of my favorites in Mount’s lists, but the joy of this book is the reminder of how vast the reading world is. There are so many possible favorites, and one of the loveliest things about this illustrated miscellany (as it describes itself on the cover) are the images of bookstores and libraries around the world that hold special places in readers’ hearts. A must-buy for anyone who has an endless bookshelf or a need to never stop turning pages.
I’ve sent as a present to friends. They have bought it for other friends. Absolutely delightful. Am planning post-Covid trips to enjoy new book stores. Love this book.
This is a wonderful book for anyone who loves books. It’s a beautifully-illustrated book that you can browse through and find a juicy book-related tidbit.
So, I am the kind of person who loves two interrelated things. One, I love deeply-researched articles and books that writers have spent years on. I love nuanced, complex books that I can learn from. And because I love finding and discovering books like these, I also love lists and short summaries. I love books that can contextualize a book for me or tell me a little delicious detail that will help me find that next great read.
This book has lots of great lists and recommendations (such as recommendations by bookish people, bucket list bookstores, books in different genres, bookstore pets, etc). This will probably add a tonne of new books to your reading list!
This is also a perfect book to pick up and open to any page when you have a couple of minutes. It’s also aesthetically beautiful. This would actually be a fabulous gift for anyone who loves books and loves to learn!
Gave it as a gift, she loved it.
While parts of this book were interesting, overall it was a little bit of a disappointment for me. By the halfway point I found myself getting bored and skimming the sections, which is never good. Part of this was because the sections were being repeated multiple times, like Beloved Bookstores, instead of being grouped together. I would have enjoyed this more if it had only been one section of each of these things instead of all the repeat sections. The first time I got to a repeat section I thought my kindle had jumped back to an earlier point in the book and it was a little irritating.
Also this book claims it will add tons of books to your TBR but sadly I didn’t add any of them. Almost all of them were books I had no interest in reading and I had only read a few of them. I did enjoy the artwork overall, a few of the portraits were a little creepy but I still liked the art style.
While this book wasn’t what I was looking for, her words about the impact on books were very true and inspiring.
“I know that any book, when read at the right moment, might make my life better, might give me a greater understanding of the universe and all the other people in it.”
And
“And if you love a book, no doubt many other people love it, too. That shared love connects us and sparks that miraculous feeling of not being alone in the world. Which is exactly the whole point of books, showing us the world as others see it, helping us understand each other, reminding us we’re all human.”
Overall, If you like books with lists I would suggest this book because it might not be what you are looking for.
Set me off in search of different authors, helpful
Not for me. May appeal to some readers but I had difficulty taking it seriously.
I’m just reading it now but it is wonderful. I highly recommend!
Beautifully illustrated, charming rundown of books which you might want to add to your collection! I adored reading this and my TBR pile grew considerably as a result. A wonderful gift for any book lover.
