They felt she was too spirited, too forward, too boyish, not as feminine and as graceful as a young woman should be. Their frowns followed her like a cloud, but she didn’t care. Other girls may have worked happily, danced beautifully, or sewn themselves pretty dresses, but they could not climb or run or swim as well as she did, the silly, giggly, empty-headed creatures that they were. The entire … entire village may have been frowning at her, but when she spotted the enemy forces camping under the Sacred Hill, they had no choice but to listen.
Okwaho knew they were being watched. Whether by spirits or a wandering local, he could not ignore the feeling of the wary, frightened, hate-filled eyes staring out of the forest, burning his skin. But of course! Of course, the local woods distrusted them. He and his people were invaders, not coming to trade or engage in other peaceful dealings, but to raid these settlements. The enemies from the lands of the rising sun were bad, evil, impossible to understand. And yet…
And yet, when the urge to prove himself lent him enough words to convince the leader of their party to send him and his friend on the mission of scouting the suspected hill, he could not have imagined what consequences this deviation from the well-planned road would lead them all into, the attackers and defenders alike.

Beyond the Great River (People of the Longhouse Book 1)
by Zoe Saadia
I loved the way the author created a very realistic character – it was easy to believe and connect with the protagonist.
A super read and splendid page-tuner, which kept me hooked from the start 5*****
A Standout!
As I sank into the story, it grabbed hold and wouldn’t let go until the end. This is a gripping tale written by a talented author. The characters are believable and plot intriguing. A real enjoyable read!
Enjoyed reading this unusual book
It was hard to believe that they would let a “girl” do all those “Men” things.
But if you are in the right place at the right time guess it is possible
I lived in that area for a while and could “see” the environment of the book:)
When I started this book, I wasn’t too sure. The setting, the culture, the nature of the people was out of my comfort zone. But as the book progressed, I found myself wishing that our world could find the compromise that these people found. I also found myself looking for the sequel. Always a good sign 🙂
A good adventure through history.
Well written historically accurate spellbinder
I loved this book. It kept my interest right up to the end. Now I’m looking forward to the next book continuing the saga.
A good read
Easy reading. Light& fun
Loved it, didn’t know Wayndot were Huron. Love the history of Indians pre America.
I really like historical books.
Zoe Saadia writes historical stories, but sometimes is hard to follow with the unusual names of the characters. The Native Americans in this case about the Mohigans and Mohawks is interesting in that they (the Five Nations of the League) had quite a system which is similar to present day political actions for running their cities as far as …
Enjoyed the historical perspective. Kept me coming back and sometimes wondering in what direction it was headed.
If you are interested in early American History, you will wonder how people could survive under the circumstances. I’m anxiously awaiting the next book.
Interesting and informative look at the northeastern Native American culture of the time.
This was haunting glimpse of a new world developing and still haunting us today
Enjoyed this read. Informative and entertaining
Imparted a strong sense of conflicts between native Americans.
I found this book atypical to literature out there today. It focused on tribes of Indians in North America through glimpses of their village life, beliefs, medicine and hostilities amongst them.
