They felt she was too spirited, too forward, too boyish, not as feminine and as graceful as a young woman should be. Their frowns followed her like a cloud, but she didn’t care. Other girls may have worked happily, danced beautifully, or sewn themselves pretty dresses, but they could not climb or run or swim as well as she did, the silly, giggly, empty-headed creatures that they were. The entire … entire village may have been frowning at her, but when she spotted the enemy forces camping under the Sacred Hill, they had no choice but to listen.
Okwaho knew they were being watched. Whether by spirits or a wandering local, he could not ignore the feeling of the wary, frightened, hate-filled eyes staring out of the forest, burning his skin. But of course! Of course, the local woods distrusted them. He and his people were invaders, not coming to trade or engage in other peaceful dealings, but to raid these settlements. The enemies from the lands of the rising sun were bad, evil, impossible to understand. And yet…

I didn’t finish this book. just couldn’t get into it. I don’t really like stories from that time period
I love Native American history but this but just didn’t take off for me. I found it boring.
Had a hard time getting into this story, didn’t continue.
I started this 3 times and just can’t seem to get into it. Way too involved tor a beginning (for an old lady). I am not deleting it — yet — as I think it could be quite good if I could get past the first 10 pages.
Basically a love story. Along the Romeo and Juliete lines. Interersting but not histical.
Nothing special, but a nice light read. Appreciated that the romantic scene included nothing leud. That has become rare.

A young girl is the main character and yes she is amazing. She also manages to form a bond and have her brother take care of a wounded enemy. She is quite …
Sadly the author didn’t bother to research First Nations People before writing the book.
Just Okay. too much “mind talk” for me (especially when some was repetitive. Seemed to only extend the book. Plus some gaps in actions/events? Something happened – but author did not finish that part of activity but moved on to something else, leaving me guessing (& at first thinking it’d be covered later – but it wasn’t). Not waiting for sequel!
