Dead, snarky heroine? Check. Dead, sarcastic BFF? Check. Murdered ghost stuffed in a locker? Check.Death is not what Bridget Sway expected. Not at all.The afterlife is a mess of bureaucracy littered with nonsensical rules. It’s a fashion disaster for a uniform and a job that doesn’t pay. It’s a heinous communal living situation with housemates who have no concept of privacy or personal space. And … heinous communal living situation with housemates who have no concept of privacy or personal space. And it’s a handsome parole officer who is a stickler for those nonsensical rules that no one has bothered to explain.
As if all of that wasn’t bad enough, someone has stuffed a dead ghost in her locker … and the afterlife police are ready to pin the murder on her.

This was a kindle deal the other day, and it’s turned out to be a well-spent 99 cents… It’s a light, fluffy, fun paranormal mystery with entertaining characters and a novel take on the life of death (yes, I meant that). I’m almost finished and it’s been a very fun diversion from the heavier non-fiction and lit fiction I seem to have been reading lately.
I wasn’t sure about this book (not my normal who done it type of book) but as it was free I thought I would give it a try. So glad I did as I really enjoyed it. In some ways it is a murder mystery (who knew ghosts could be murdered) but with out all the sloppy love interest that normally happens. What really made the book fun was the way that Bridget had to cope with being a ghost, not the normal woo is me I am dead hysterics but all the different rules of being a ghost ,as well as , solve a murder and try not to get killed again. Will be reading the next book very soon!
A fantastic book! Life goes on…
This author has a fluent writing style. It’s an original and fun book! Different, in a good way. And very British. Lol! I like it when an author has the gift of playing with words. It’s a full-length book, so the characters are more developed than some of the shorter mysteries that I’ve read.
Bridget’s funny, charismatic, sarcastic in a witty way and full of self-confidence. She’s also quite vain! Fantastic how she still cares how she looks, even in death. By the way, important question: can ghosts get fat? Even though Bridget is very selfish, you don’t mind because she’s so funny. Oh, and she has a problem with authority. Which does NOT come in handy. At all. And she needs to solve a murder in the afterlife. Huh? Yeah, you read that right! Apparently, after you die, you can be deadER.
Oh, if you thought afterlife would be peaceful? Nope. It’s no fun at all, with work, strict rules (there are many, many, many rules. For instance, haunting isn’t allowed… now is that not something that you would like to do?), restrictions, Bureaucracy with a capital B, a job that’s quite incomprehensible, mandatory meetings, no, it’s certainly not heaven. To Bridget, it seems more like hell.
The investigation starts off a bit slow, but Bridget needs to come to terms with how things work in this weird afterlife. In the beginning of the book there is a lot about that; it’s very interesting but the case of the dead ghost doesn’t get much attention yet. So it takes a while before the mystery part of the story really gets going, but stick around, it’s sooooo worth it! There’s lots of suspense later on! Right until the end, you just don’t know who to trust…
Halfway through and I just couldn’t put it down anymore. Kept on reading when I should’ve been doing other things. That’s when you know you’ve discovered something really good.
The end promises a lot for the next book!
Really enjoyed this new take on the afterlife.
Once I got into the book , it was interesting.
This book is about a newly dead woman and her adventures in the after life.
Too difficult to finish reading… sorry.
I thought this book was very entertaining it held my interest that’s what I like about a book to hold my interest so I don’t get bored
Main character is irritatingly stupid. Other characters are cardboard cutouts. Only saving grace is witty prose and an interesting setting.
Loved this book. Characters were amazing. I would love to see this made into a movies!
I have the whole series. Very entertaining!
Despite an annoying main character, this book sucked me in. enjoyable take on the afterlife.
What a fun read! This book is the first in the series and is so much fun! It had me laughing out loud at times! The writing is very well done and draws you into the story! The characters are well developed and believable. They feel like people I could know and be friends with. Overall this was an excellent cozy mystery and I highly recommend it to fans of the genre!
This had humor about Bridget Sway who died and found out she has to work, wear a uniform and solve a murder of a dead ghost in her locker
Reminds me of the Undead series by MaryJanice Davidson. Same sort of humor, but here we are dealing with ghosts, not vampires.
The Afterlife Bridget Sway finds herself in after being hit by a bus is quite complicated. There’s a lot of laws and rules to keep up with, and they are not disclosed all at once. The hunt for the murderer seems bland and not that intriguing, yet I felt somewhat entertained while listening to the audiobook.
This book is off the wall, and not like anything I’ve read before. It took me awhile to really get into the book, it seemed a bit slow in the beginning, but it really does pick up speed and will have you laughing out loud as Bridget tries to solve a mystery that they are trying to pin on her – different ghosts are ending up dead dead in her locker – so she’s breaking all kinds of rules and her guardian Oz has his hands full keeping her out of trouble. But Bridget and her fun sidekick and dead BFF, Sabrina have a mystery to solve and to clear Bridget’s name and it turns into a lot of fun getting there and watching Bridget navigate her new life as a dead person. And you can kill a ghost so that they are dead dead. Who knew? 4.5 Stars
This was a great way to introduce a series! It’s funny and the character is a strong female lead. I relate to her because of her love of beauty and tendency to be late lol. I found myself smiling throughout the book. The author does a good job of ending the book with you wanting more from the series and not a huge cliffhanger. Looking forward to more adventures with Bridget and learning more about the afterlife.
I throughly enjoyed this book and this series! I
would hope that all who see this will pick up one of the Beyond Dead books because you are in for a treat if you do!
Maybe you’ve always thought when you die you’ll be playing a harp and sitting on a cloud all day long-WRONG!! You’ll find out you still have to get up do household chores go to work and follow the rules! Everything you do here except you don’t have a body and oh yes even though you’re dead you can still be killed and become very dead!
Follow the antics of Bridget and Sabrina as they push and break almost every rule in trying to find out who is trying to frame Bridget for murdering people! The afterlife has never been funnier! There are plenty of lol moments and others that you will be grinning and smiling to yourself at the shenanigans these girls get into!
We hear doom and gloom constantly from the media and political parties-don’t you want to escape for a few days or weeks from that? Well this is your ticket to getting out of that doom and gloom rut! Please give yourself a break and start one of these books! Your self will thank you for it!!
Why do dead ghosts keep showing up in Bridget’s locker? It’s bad enough to be killed by a bus but when you have to go to work every day, live in a house with roommates with no sense of personal space, and a hot guardian/parole officer with a hands off policy of forever, what’s she supposed to do about the doubly dead? Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on your perspective, she meets a private investigator who refuses to say “former” to describe her “livie” occupation and who convinces Bridget that her only hope to get the clueless ghost police off her back is to solve the mysteries of the murders herself. It’s for her own good. What could go wrong with this plan?
Wow, an unexpected twist for a cozy mystery. I loved it! There was humor and suspense in this story and kept you reading until the end. If you love cozy mysteries and ghosts, this is a fantastic book for you.
