Divorced, desperate, and destitute, former restaurateur Defiance Dayne finds out she has been bequeathed a house by a complete stranger. She is surprised, to say the least, and her curiosity gets the better of her. She leaves her beloved Phoenix and heads to one of the most infamous towns in America: Salem, Massachusetts. She’s only there to find out why a woman she’s never met would leave her a … a house. A veritable castle that has seen better days. She couldn’t possibly accept it, but the lawyer assigned to the case practically begs her to take it off her hands, mostly because she’s scared of it. The house. The inanimate structure that, as far as Dephne can tell, has never hurt a fly. Though it does come with some baggage. A pesky neighbor who wants her gone. A scruffy cat who’s a bit of a jerk. And a handyman bathed ink who could moonlight as a supermodel for GQ. She decides to give it three days, and not because of the model. She feels at home in Salem. Safe. But even that comes to a screeching halt when people begin knocking on her door day and night, begging for her help to locate their lost objects. Come to find out, they think she’s a witch. And after a few mysterious mishaps, Dephne is beginning to wonder if they’re right.

4.5
I really enjoyed this fun tale of magical mishaps and family secrets. The MC is a woman in her 40’s who has found her foundation ripped away through divorce. She’s broke, nearly homeless and desperate, then she gets a notice of an inheritance from someone she doesn’t even know. It’s a huge gothic house, a house that has more needs than she’s ready for. Oh but this house is worth so much more wait till you see what the basement has to offer. :X
I found Defiance (MC) a bit irritating in bits, she just wouldn’t listen or take things seriously enough for me. When I got over trying to make her into someone I wanted her to be I enjoyed her much more, even started loving her character. I am in total lust with the leather kilted hottie and want one of my very own !
Cliffhanger ending, can’t wait for more in this promising series Oh this would make such a great movie/series
I don’t have enough words to convey how much I enjoyed this story! Best of all, it’s not over!
Defiance has nothing left. She lost it all to her ex husband and his evil mother. Until she inherits a house, from someone she has no idea she even knew! But it gets better! The beautiful, dark house has a name, and a temper. A strange cat and a very hot man seem to show up every where and the surprises just keep coming. Undeniably a five star read that I’m hoping will only get better and better as the story unfolds. Freaking awesome characters that just leap off the pages and unbelievably detailed and seriously a w some storyline! I could not believe it was over so quickly. I’m heartbroken waiting for the next one!
Classic Darynda Jones…which means lots of laugh out loud moments and really great best friend dynamics (and of course, at least one hot guy and lovable pet).
Betwixt was so much fun to read. Plain and simple.
I loved Defiance, her best friend Annette, and her gigi in a box. All three were wonderful, funny, zany women. Put together with a fun story plot, and great secondary characters and you have the perfect mix for a unputdownable read (Classic Darynda Jones).
The story is a fresh, updated, and fun twist on the “Charmed” mythology and since I loved the original show and even the reboot, this hit the sweet spot for me. As did the setting (I mean, what’s not to love about Salem, MA!). I don’t want to give spoilers away, but Gigi was a hoot and a half. I’m very curious to see where the author takes this series and will definitely be reading the next book in her #PWF series!
An amazing read, I can’t wait to read the next one! BUT, a cliffhanger… Ugh, that’s so hard to read and not be able to go right onto the next book. Defiance is described exactly how I would imagine a girl named Defiance would be. And Roane, I can’t wait to read more about him. Very different themes in this book compared to others I have read and I loved it!
Solid 3.75 Stars. Overall the story flows well & the characters are like able, if not very relate-able.
I did find myself cringing at times at the childish antics of Defiance & Annette, who are both in their 40’s.
I felt this was a bit of a “filler” book. We got the background, world building & story prep, that will hopefully lead into a more meatier story in the next 2 books.
I for sure will be reading the next books in this series to see how things go.
I hope we see Defiance continue to grow & mature. I hope we get to see lots more of Roane & kilt.

Loved this new book… Darynda Jones NEVER disappoints! I laughed, I cried, fell in love & laughed some more. Can not wait for the next! I Love Darynda Jones, but I’ll admit I was a bit wary if this character, this book, could live upto the amazing character she wrote in Charlie Davidson… and I wasn’t disappointed. It was like reading my own life, her feelings her sentiment, her mishaps, without the magic of course (dang it). A heroine over 40, as I am learning myself, when life truly begins! And what a cliffhanger… WOW! Always felt bad for authors when one books is just released & readers are “WHEN’S THE NEXT!?!?” But, I am joining that bandwagon… when is the next?!?! Can’t wait to read the other PWF authors as well!
This story is so many kinds of magic. I was sucked in from the first page. I laughed so hard through out the whole book. Defiance has no clue what she is or how she got this house. People in town seem to know her and are very excited she is there. As this story unfolds you find that her story of adoption has a lot of other stuff involved. She has a hot guy working on her house she doesn’t know where he goes or comes from. It is fine because you need a hot gut. She has a family that cares for her. She has a friend that will uproot her life to be there for her. All she needs to do is figure out why she is in this town and is just now learning things about herself she never knew before.
This book is apart of PWF. Paranormal woman’s fiction. It is about woman over 40 that is tired of sitting through life. That is is okay to have a heroine over 40 that can live in the fantasy world and survive.
Darynda Jones is one of my favorite authors, so I always get excited whenever she announces a new book. Normally, I have to wait a year for a new book to release, because they are traditionally published. So I was happy when I saw that she was working on a couple of projects that she would publish herself. I am very used to her writing style, which is mostly light and fun, but she is also know to throw an emotional punch every now and then. Betwixt is about Defiance (love the name), who just went through a divorce and is left pretty much empty handed. So when she is contacted that someone has left her a house, she decides to see what that is all about.
I loved that the story got straight to the point. There was no long unnecessary world-building. The side characters created an amazing atmosphere. The chemistry between Defiance and them was awesome. I especially loved her relationship with her best friend Annette. Also I loved the sexy kilt wearing mysterious handyman who pops up at super random moments. I loved the paranormal elements and I thought it didn’t overpower the whole story which I appreciated. I think Betwixt is a great introduction to this series, and I already love the characters. It was funny, quirky, and mysterious. It also had a couple of suspenseful scenes which added a nice touch to the book. I also appreciated the couple of twists to the story, especially the one at the end. It has me extra excited to get my hands on the next book.
Overall rating: 5
Yes! These characters had me laughing, crying , and rooting them on! I finished this wholehearted feeling the deep need for more and getting highly upset with myself for aching yet again for another book 2. Needless to say, this author did exactly what any good author would do…hook that reader in! Hoping that I won’t be left dangling on a hook for long! All my reviews are always voluntarily written.
What An Absolute Laugh With A Side Of Serious & Sexy!! A Fabulously Funny 4.5 Stars!

Betwixt: Betwixt & Between #1
This was such a fun book. I loved Dephne & Annette’s characters and friendship! I thought Percy had the potential to be something really interesting in the future. I love her Grandma Gigi but wow does she have secrets and things to answer for! Roane was such a mystery, sexy, quiet & hotter than sin but he seems kind & wants to help!?!
This was a really enjoyable read, funny but also not afraid to make you feel!! Its really well written & paced beautifully throughout. I can’t wait for more & this was my first read by this Author, it won’t be my last!!
