I love the challenges to beliefs and the realizations in this story that things we think most matter don’t. But other, longer lasting things do. Faith and family challenges that go right to the heart of our senses of belief and of justice. Susan outdid herself on this one!
I love anything Susan Wiggs writes and really enjoyed this one.
This is another wonderful book by Susan Wiggs – her books never fail to deliver a wonderful story of family and love and this one is a definite winner.
Reese is an intern in the ER of a large teaching hospital in Philadelphia. Her parents have her life planned out for her and want her to become a surgeon and join their practice. She is totally stressed out with her current life and is unsure of the direction she wants to go next. A young Amish boy is brought into the ER with a life threatening condition – his arm has become mangled in a farm accident. His uncle, who is also his guardian, Caleb arrives at the hospital with him. With his Amish clothing and ways, he appears to be strong and stoic. Reese is attracted to him and his quiet ways and tries to help him while his nephew is in the hospital. Though their lives are totally opposites, their attraction to each other continues to grow until they face major decisions in their lives.
This is a wonderful well written novel about family and love and ultimately asks the question over whether children should follow the path that their parents set for them or the path that will bring them happiness.
Thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own.
I highly recommend this book. The story is unique and well told and the characters are interesting….the plot takes some very unexpected turns. Extremely well written!
Between you and me by Susan Wiggs
Have read many other works by this author and know this will be a good read also.
Starts out with a young mother having just given birth and she will be giving away her son, it’s for the best.
We then find an Amish family and a terrible accident has happened with sharp blades…
As the story goes along you learn new things about the Amish way of things. Jonah is the young boy that is being transported to the hospital, his nephew. Caleb finds the hospital so unfamiliar.
Dr. Reese in the trauma section helps Caleb in the city, get clean clothes, food to eat, place to stay because Jonah will be recuperating a long time.
Like how she helps him around while his nephew is getting better, it’s all so foreign to Caleb. Once he returns to his lands the govermnet want to take the kids away…
Story also follows Reese and her new path in specializing in her doctor career…
Amazing how they are brought together…
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).
Susan Wiggs at her best. A deep relational story in the midst of a clash of 2 cultures. I’ve read most of her books and they just keep getting better…..
This book is amazing. I couldn’t put it down. How two different lives were so similar. Would highly recommend.
Between You and Me is a heart felt story you can relate to as the characters reveal kept lies and the emotions the truth brings.
Sometimes life can be complicated and sometimes in our search for the right decision there are so many other factors that come into play. Caleb Stolz meets Reese Powell in the trauma unit of the hospital as Reese is finishing her last weeks before she finally will be called Doctor Powell when Caleb arrives by helicopter with his nephew after a farming accident. To say it is love at first sight might be incorrect but for me I saw two people who may possibly have found the one person who would mean so much in their life. There are many hurdles for this couple, the main one is Caleb lives in an Amish community and agreed to remain there to raise his niece and nephew. Reese, the daughter of over-bearing physicians who are well known in the medical field is trying to find her footing as she makes the decision about the type of medicine she will practice. The highs and lows of Between You & Me bring you into Caleb and Reese’s lives so eloquently written it is as if you are there with them as they face each decision that they each must make. A wonderful and heartfelt story and an exquisitely written book.
Another great novel from Susan Wiggs. Likeable characters, good storytelling, very readable, very interesting.
This is a new book out for Susan Wiggs about an Amish love affair. If you have read other authors books on this subject. I recommend that you try this one. I have fun and short ownership of all her books I have read so far. I read this one in 4 days that is how good she has written this story. I wasn’t to try other authors books on the subject soon.
Absolutely one of the best books I have ever read. All the feels and the characters are amazing. I did not want this one to end and tears of joy at the ending. Many 5 stars for it.
I liked the two worlds colliding and coming together as one.
My first by Susan Wiggs. A unique plot with fascinating characters.
Wow, what a great story. Having read over a dozen of Ms. Wiggs books I can unqualifiedly say that this was my favorite. As always she figures each have a compelling story and the interaction between them was especially fascinating with this book. Totally believable and memorable.
I loved it ! All the elements of a really good romance and uplifting too
Early on Caleb Stolz knew he didn’t quite fit into the Amish community that he grew up in, he had dreams, and in order to attain any of those dreams he would have to leave behind everything he knew, and abandoned the life that had be laid out for him. So when the time came to leave he didn’t think twice about it, he headed into the city, tried to embrace the new culture, find his place in the new world, and just as he was started to find his way, Amish country called him home. His brother and sister-in-law were murdered, and that left his niece and nephew in the hands of his father, and he knew that would never do, he knew all to well what life was like with his father and he just couldn’t bare the thought of that, so he gave up his dream and moved home. Now he spends his days living a quiet and sheltered life he never saw for himself, caring out a promise to his brother, that he wholeheartedly intends to keep, no who happens to wander into his life.
From a very early age Reese Powell learned that her parents had her future all planned out for her, she was to follow in their footsteps and become a successful doctor alongside them at their clinic. While she liked the idea of being a doctor, and maybe someday working the medical field, she wasn’t so sure she wanted to follow the entire path they paved for her, she had a few ideas of her own that she wanted to explore. While on rotation as an emergency room doctor she meets a family that helps her figure out the path she wants to take, and she grasps an unexpected opportunity that falls into her lap, and takes her on a journey that changes her life. And brings her far more that she ever anticipated…
Between You and Me is a thought-provoking and moving tale that is certain to leave an impression on your heart. From the very first pages of this beautifully written tale I found myself completely enamored with these characters and the worlds they were living in, both vastly different from the other, but there were a few commonalities to be found. Reese being expected to follow the path her parents set before her, and Caleb struggling to find his way in a world he never planned to return to, both realizing that sometimes you have to go against the grain to find happiness, even if it may hurt the ones you love to get there. There was so much to enjoy about this story, and so much to learn from it, it was a very eye opening and heartfelt experience, one I won’t soon forget. Definitely, one of my favorite reads this year, and one of the most impressionable first reads I’ve ever had, highly recommend!! I requested an advanced copy of this title, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion.
When tragedy happens, what you want, must sometimes take second seat to do what’s best for your loved ones.
Using the style we’ve come to know and love from Susan Wiggs, Between You and Me explores family dynamics in the Amish community and the family dynamics between parents driven to succeed and wanting the same success for their child. Caleb Stoltz defying the elders to get the best treatment for his nephew, and with Reese Powell, a child of physicians, and a budding physician herself, who is torn between her parents dreams for her, and her own needs.
Caleb has returned to the Amish life after tragedy in his family and is doing his duty, but his soul is unfulfilled. Reese doesn’t want to disappoint her parents but is not interested in the course of study they want her to pursue.
Reese wants to slow down and Caleb wants to move forward. Can the wishes of their hearts come together or will their differences and family circumstances be too overwhelming to allow them to move forward together.
Fabulous book.
Susan Wiggs knows how to create not only awesome characters but she brings them to life! I want more!!
I absolutely loved this book! A man who has suffered many hardships growing up Amish and left, vowing to never return, does return when his brother and sister in law were killed and he is now raising his niece and nephew. After a farm accident injures his nephew, he meets Dr Reese Powell who works at the hospital where the boy was taken. This is a beautiful story about life, loss, love and so much more.
