I’ve read previous books by Carol Mason and in this one, she manages to take the complicated subject of divorce, parents that remarry, and step into a sometimes unfamiliar role as a parent with no standing. The emotional issues attached to a split family, trying to maintain a semblance of normality for their children, that can only succeed with cooperation and lots of work.
Between You and Me, takes such a scenario and adds a much younger woman, with no children as the new stepmother, destined to fail before she’s unpacked.
Lauren is a junior doctor in a busy ER,trying to balance an new marriage to an older man and his 4 yr old spoiled son, resentful 14 yr old daughter, and a passive aggressive ex wife. Lauren can seem to do nothing right and several unfortunate mishaps, cast an attitude of a reckless step mother, unable or unwillingly to deal with children.
As her new husband begins to question her every action and sides with his ex and kids, Lauren begins to doubt herself and if she can survive this marriage or even want to.
Between You and Me is a domestic thriller, that kept me waiting for something really sinister to occur, as I got further into this book.
Carol Mason is a skilled story teller and her characters are well developed and interesting. This is a novel that kept me riveted to the conclusion.
My thanks to NetGalley, the author and Lake Union Publishing for the ARC. I thought it deserved the 5 stars.
Great book if you love thrillers!
Tedious, repetitive & predictable.
Realistic read with a surprising ending.
Very few books make me want to go back to the start when I get to the end of it. This was a good book that I had to re-read from another perspective. Well done
The “twist” was obvious from the first few pages.
I maybe the only one, but Inever guessed the twist at the end. Great read.
“A twist you won’t see coming” claimed the description, and I didn’t. The ending was so contrived that I felt cheated to have wasted my time on this book.
a twist you won’t forget…….
Good reading. Keeps you guessing.
Still not happy with the ending…but interesting the way the story was told.
What a great book! I NEVER would have guessed the ending.
This story became a mind boggling journey into the lives of this couple. Such sadness, heartache and tragedy….absolutely chilling and unfathomable that one could live under such circumstances.
Great twist at the end that will leave you THINKING!!!
This book is a vivid portrait of a classic evil narcissistic psychopath who feeds on spousal abuse – both verbal and emotional. The writing style is odd, but only until the “aha” moment. I enjoyed the way the book started at the tragic scene and then went back in time to explain the circumstances leading to that final blow. I wouldn’t consider this a gripping psychological drama because it’s far too simplistic, but it has its value and delivers a clear psychopathic profile.
Wow, didn’t expect that ending!
I was disappointed in this book as I felt it was contrived with a phony, ill planned twist at the end.
This was a very difficult book to follow. It was also psychologically unfounded. I was disappointed.
Domestic violence is a sad, but true reality of some people’s lives, and this book did a good job of portraying both sides of the relationship – the abused and the abuser. I was confused by the ending at first, and it took some readjustment of what I had assumed all through the book. I felt that the ending took away from the heart of the story. Because I appreciated the author’s realistic description of domestic violence, I gave this book four stars.
The plot twist at the end made me go back and read a few sentences several times to make sure I got it. Fabulous book.
