An excellent first book. She has built a world that any mortal would love to get lost in. The characters were well-drawn, and I love how stubbornness is an attribute and not a fault. The last few chapters I could not put it down! It moved to a swiftly satisfying conclusion and I really can’t wait for the next one.
I love all things fae so I was really excited to read this book. Ridge has created a fantastic YA fantasy story filled with adventure, suspense, teenage romance and an endearingly relatable heroine. Alexis’s character is something of a loner and an all around quiet, bookworm personality, but with the kind of stubborn tenacity that I admire in a heroine. The author’s storytelling is completely immersive with rich story world descriptions and a complex supporting cast. Can’t wait to move on to the next book in the series!
Note: I received this book from the author and I voluntarily give this review, it is my honest opinion.
Alexis and Molly are the best of friends, while Alexis is a bit of a loner, Molly is more outgoing, friendly and overall bubbly. They do everything together, they are closer than sisters. Then something unthinkable happens, Molly disappears, and Alexis thinks the fae are involved. Alexis knows Molly wouldn’t leave her and the adults in charge aren’t really doing a good job, so it’s up to Alexis to get her best friend back. The question is what is she willing to do to make that happen.
The fae are my favorite type of supernatural, they are so versatile, that they can be beautiful, they can look like natural elements or they can look terrifying. The fae are unpredictable, whimsical and terrifying. I love reading different interpretations of them and I love collecting their stories. Jennifer Ridge has done a good job interpreting the fae in Between Worlds.
In the beginning, the story moved a little slow but it picked up and kept my interest. The descriptions got better as the book went on and I recognized some of my favorite type of fae magic, also the fact that at one point Between Worlds started to remind me of Alice in Wonderland is a plus. The world build was decent without giving to much information at once there was a good amount of fae mythology.
Alexis is the main character, the story is told from her pov and I hate to say it but I couldn’t really connect to her fully. Overall I thought she was an okay character but sometimes she annoyed me and was reckless for no reason. On the flip-side to that, Alexis was determined, a loyal friend, clever and surprisingly scrappy. Alexis’ journey most definitely leaves a mark, by the end of it she is different and I like her just a little bit more.
While Alexis may be a loner, there is a romance. It’s a slow-building relationship and with Alexis being so stubborn it’s not an easy one but she finds someone that she connects to, he understands her, she understands him and they form a real connection. I love them together and I want the next book because I think it’s also gonna be told from his pov.
In Between Worlds Alexis journeys to the dangerous world of the fae, there is danger, romance, fae plots, and mysteries at every turn. Alexis learns and grows throughout the book. I love the whimsy and romance and I am looking forward to reading that in the next book in the series.
This is a fun and sometimes scary young adult novel about fairies, humans, and adventure where one damsel tries to safe her damsel best friend. I wasn’t sure I would like this book because the main characters are 17 year olds and I try to read less with teenagers being main characters, mainly I’m much older and I can’t relate anymore to teens but this book really pulled me. I swear, it has fae magic and pulls in readers.
For 17+ who like adventure, romance and traveling between worlds. Plus the cover is very pretty.
This was a very enjoyable read. I liked the author’s attention to detail on the fairy realm, weaving together different aspects of the gaelic traditions on the fae. I particularly loved the aspect of friendship and loyalty between friends. It reminded me a lot of my own friendship as a teenager.
Although it took me a while to get into the story, the final third totally makes up for it. The plot is brilliant and not predictable. I thoroughly enjoyed the closing. It was very satisfying, opwning things up for what promises to be a great series without leaving you panting because of a harsh cliffhanger. I look forward to reading what’s next in Alexis’ adventures.
I am also impressed at the subtlety of the romance which smacks of teenage innocence, naivite and the irritating obliviousness to a very special relationship, born of inexperience.
