NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author Kathryn Shay writes fascinating, realistic contemporary romances. Her specialty is troubled teenagers. A teacher in a public school for years, she knows kids and the men and women who teach them, as evidenced by this new book in the Bayview Heights series!
From gang kid, to famous heart surgeon…John Battaglia is back with his own book. So is the love of his … of his life, Meg Mancini, who he abandoned in his quest for the brass ring. Delve into the world of heart surgery and, once again, into the brutal society of gang life.
John is proud of his rise in the ranks of the medical field. At only thirty-six, he’s done more surgeries and had more success than most doctors in the middle of their careers. He hasn’t forgotten his roots, though. The Lansing family is still near and dear to him. He’s happy and content with his life. But his outlook changes when he sees Meg again at a shelter where they both volunteer. Old feelings deluge him as their past together resurfaces.
Meg wants nothing to do with hotshot Johnny Battaglia. She was crazy about him years ago, but he broke her heart when he chose a different path from the one they’d planned together. Though she’s satisfied with her life, she’s never found anyone to fill the hole Johnny left in her. But she knows better than to let him get close again.
However, when gang member Dash Bodine, who resembles Johnny in looks and circumstances, brings John and Meg together, they can’t avoid each other. And when they’re together, passion flares. Is that enough? Or will past mistakes preclude any kind of happily-ever-after?

I love this series. As a former teacher, she gets it. I read other books in this series and I love them all. Whether she’s writing about fires or troubled kids, Kathryn Shay does her homework. Her characters are believable, interesting and inspiring, as well as ringing true.
Meg and John were a couple, but he opts not to join her full-time at a clinic and becomes a heart surgeon. She is offended by his choice, seeing it as a rejection of their agreement to work at the clinic, and feels betrayed by his wealthy lifestyle. But they come together after a decade + and recognize that what they have together is special and worth compromise.
A great book, I just skipped over the steamy parts.
They once we’re on the same page with similar goals but all that changed. In time they both realize it won’t ever be worth it without one another.
An interesting perspective of differences in upbringing and challenges of career choices. Got a little too detailed in a few places making it drag … worth getting past those.
Author was able to portray the characters realistically and made me think about gang members in a different way.
It’s a world of saints and sinners, gangs and sanctuaries, better and best and it all depends on how you view life.
Amazing story. I have never lived in an area where there were gangs and I can’t imagine the terror that’s involved. Loved how this store turned out and really enjoyed this author.

I love the way she melds previous characters and yet each one can be read As a standalone.
