This is only the beginning! I’m truly astounded by what I just read! Dylan Allen so eloquently and captivatingly captured my heart, thoughts and emotions with this realistic and angst filled story.
My heart literally aches for what Elisabeth has had to endure in her young life. I was devastated at her loss. And yet, there is a resilience and determination in her that leads me to admire her strength and endurance. She shines with beauty both inside and out! Her true talent lies within her. I love her!
Carter is broken yet striving to find himself and his identity. He’s talented and trying to fulfill the dreams of others as well as his own. When he sees Elisabeth he truly “sees” her. He is such an inspiration to me in wanting to know what he has in his future.
I’m so caught up in this amazing story that I can’t stop thinking about it! I can’t wait for book 2!
Let me just get out of the way that I hope the editors go over this book before it published. That being said I’m not sure how I feel about Beth. I wish she had tried to get away from her family after her brother was gone. I don’t know how you she can stay there. And why she is trusting Duke who did horrible things to her makes me crazy!! I just need her and Carter to get themselves back to each other. I’m interested to see how this story pans out in book 2.
I wrote this review based on an advance reading copy that the publisher sent me.
This book was absolutely amazing. It had you feeling all kinds of emotions through the book and excited for the next book to see what happens next
This one was packed full of twists and turns and pretty angsty. With it being part of a trilogy, I’m sure that there is going to be so much more that unfolds. I’m really looking forward as to where this goes.
Carter was instantly lovable, I was charmed right off the bat with him. I loved the banter between him and his family. And I adored that he liked at Beth and saw the swan instead of the ugly duckling everyone else did. My heart broke right along with his during his struggles in the book.
I’m a little on the fence with Beth. She’s shy and sweet but she really had a hard time standing up for herself. Her naive nature is completely due to the way she’s been brought up and it was frustrating t times, however she’s battling years of everyone dictating her every move so understandable why she is the way she is. I’m really hoping she can find her strength and voice.
Allen definitely takes you on a ride with this one. I’m excited to see where it goes. 3.75 stars.

I was looking forward to reading this author’s work as I have never read any of her books before. The first of a trilogy, this is a story of two interesting but imperfect characters from eminent families.
Elizabeth is the only daughter of a wealthy and prominent businessman with political ambitions to the highest office. With her pedigree, you’d think she is the typical princess but is exactly the opposite. In her father’s eyes, she is lacking in qualities that make her the perfect daughter. She has daddy issues and is always striving to get his approval.
Carter is a musical prodigy and comes from a loving family background but he has serious issues and has fallen out of grace from the public. He needs to redeem himself and is struggling to win back their trust.
The first chapter begins as a flashback to Carter and Beth’s first meeting when the author introduces us to their families. Beth’s father rules the small Texan town of Winsome. She craves for her father’s love but he only sees her as a commodity and a pawn for his quest to achieve political fame. Carter is considered the “odd” one in his famous reality TV family, he is a much-loved member but spirals downhill when he finds out about a secret.
Whilst I found the storyline riveting, there is something about Beth that kept me from connecting with her character. She is a naive twenty-one-year-old girl and her bad decisions annoyed the heck out of me. She is definitely not the perfect heroine, but I do hope that in book two she develops that much-needed backbone. The Machiavellian antagonist in this tale is intriguing in such a way that I wonder how the author can make this character possibly even eviler in the follow-up book. Let’s wait and see!
The attraction between Carter and Beth is undeniable right from the start but the turn of events that happen after their first meeting keeps them apart for most of the book’s timeline. Of course, we are all rooting for these two lovers to reunite and although the plot twist in the last chapter is somewhat predictable, I can’t wait to read the next installment. The characters in this saga are flawed but that doesn’t make their story less fascinating. Thank goodness I don’t have to wait too long for the next one as I am dying to find out how Beth and Carter’s story pans out.
I adored this book, and I absolutely loved Carter right from the beginning.
This is one twisted tale indeed. It starts off ever so sweet with a very lovely prologue, but boy oh boy, how things change.
Elizabeth is a lovely heroine, struggling with ALL.THE.THINGS. Seriously. Her life is NOT one that you envy or even want for your worst enemy. I felt for her all the time. At the same time, I identified with some of her feelings.
Carter is a great hero as well. He has issues of his own and lots of flaws, but he’s also very reasonable and easy to relate to.
There’s a wide variety of characters in this book, but they were easy to keep track of.
The reason this wasn’t a five star read for me is that it felt too much as the beginning of a book. I get that it’s a trilogy and I’m okay with that, but I think the pacing was a bit too slow, at least for my liking.
The book ends with a cliffhanger, but I have to say I wasn’t too surprised. It’s not that I saw it coming exactly, but I had a pretty good idea where it was going, and in the end, I wasn’t too far off. That being said, I’m still VERY excited to see where this is headed!! 😀
