Mei Lin Yu should have been looking forward to the next stage in her life. As a descendant of one of the Founding Families who led the exodus from a dying Earth and now rule New Eden, Mei’s choices are endless. But she has never felt part of the Yu Family or the world of technological marvels and genetic perfection the Founders created. All that will change the summer she spends at … Mynyddamore, the home her ancestor Mabel Yu built in western Caelestis. Here, living among the Ddaerans, the original inhabitants of New Eden, Mei will discover secrets about Mabel Yu that her family want to keep buried and a truth about herself that will forever change her own destiny.
Between Mountain and Sea is a coming of age novel, the first book in USA Today Bestselling author Louisa Locke’s Caelestis series in the Paradisi Chronicles (an open source, science fiction world created by multiple authors).

I read the whole series. Very entertaining, great characters and inter family dynamics, set off by good world building.
This is a typical Science Fiction book. It starts a bit slowly but then I realized it is that rarity in SF circles a character study. At that point I was fully engaged with the characters. They are well drawn and very sympathetic. I keep thinking about them well after finishing the story.
She has created a full world with characters making the usual human errors, even though they know better
I almost never give a 5 star rating
Highly recommended
Really enjoyed this book. Reminded me of Anne McCaffery!!!
Enjoyed this book very much. Have already ordered Books 2 & 3 in the series.
A good series to read
Very well written kept me wanting more
Well written, believable characters and world
Suppose humanity defiled the earth so much the population had to find a new home. Probes are sent out seeking possible habitable planets, research goes into viable long distance space travel, and methods of transporting food stuffs that have the best probability of growing in different conditions. Of course we know that those who are able to make such technological advancements will go, but even so, some will not be making the trip because status is important even in these high intellectual groups. This actually shows up on the new planet as the more superior family becomes the leaders.
Now the actual story is a combination of a diary written by one of the young women of the high family, so we have a narration of prep, selection, and transport. Then we have the young woman who is the center of the story. She is a descendant of the first woman, the writer of the diary. New Eden is the new planet they are going to call home and ooops, there are people already living there. And, they look a lot like us. Shades of “Manifest Destiny” they are subdued. How ever there is something very special about these people and the way they can communicate. These three things tie into the tale and make the story take on a life of it’s own as it develops.
Good reading for readers who enjoy fictional tales of historical development. Nothing to burden the young mind. Sex and violence are not part of this story.
This book seeks to use one’s imagination yet is just lovely reading for animal and outdoor lovers. Something about this book is on another level. I was pleased to have had it amongst the books I have located. The first chapter initiates lots of names/generations to set up the reading but after that it pulls together into a most enjoyable story. Not realistic in a variety of ways but in other ways very close to nature.
This was an intricately woven plot that allows the reader to become acquainted with several generations of the heroine’s family line. The characters are well developed and very robust.
enjoyed the series and passed on the titles to my brother
I am now reading the 3rd book in the series and can’t put it down.
Awesome first book in a series. I couldn’t put it down.
Louisa Locke is able to weave two timelines together without either timeline becoming boring and predictable. That’s a lot harder than it sounds! And she does it beautifully.
I gauge books on if I want to read it or do something else. This book won.
Really enjoyed the series
Excellent !
I enjoyed reading this book and keeping up with all the characters.
This story follows the young life of Mei Lin Yu, a member of a founding family of a new world civilization on a new planet. Earth is dying and 10 Chinese great families have taken a long voyage on 10 space ships to this new world. Mei Lin is the great great granddaughter of one of the children of the Yu family, Mabel Yu, who went on to lead a colonie in peace with the indigenous population. The book goes back and forth between Mabel Yu’s diary entries and Mei Lin’s like in that same colonie. Very good read as Mei Lin learns of her ancestor and tries to figure out what she wants to do as she continues to learn about herself and her abilities as well.
Very interesting concept, just had trouble pronouncing many of the names. I totally enjoyed this book
