“You think you know me. You think you want to know me. But trust me, Miss Lang. Pursuing me will be the worst mistake you ever make. I’m broken beyond repair… scraping enough cash together to pay the bills has proven almost impossible. Her parents are on the brink of losing their home. The vultures are circling overhead. So when Ophelia is offered an interview for a well-paid private tutoring gig in New York, how can she possibly say no?
Ronan Fletcher is far from the overweight, balding businessman Ophelia expected him to be. He’s young, handsome, and wealthy beyond all reason. He’s also perhaps the coldest, rudest person she’s ever met, and has a mean streak in him a mile and a half wide. A hundred grand is a lot of money, however, and if tolerating his frosty temperament, his erratic mood swings and whatever else he throws at her means she’ll get paid, then that is what Ophelia will do.
Her new boss is keeping secrets, though. Awful, terrible secrets.
The ghosts of Ronan Fletcher’s past are about to turn Ophelia’s future upside down, and she can’t even see it coming.

This book rocked my world. I had no idea what to expect, but I never saw any of that coming.
Ophelia’s family business needed money to stay afloat. When an opportunity arose for her to take a job that could give her the money to save her family, she took it. She never imagined the turn her life would take.
Being a nanny to two young children can’t be that hard for an unemployed teacher. A small island town that embraces its inhabitants seems like a nice enough place. Her employer is rather prickly, but she won’t see him much, so it should be fine. Ophelia thought the six months she agreed to would fly by and she would go back to her life.
Nothing went as planned.
This story is complex and emotional. I am still reeling after finishing. This was completely different and nothing I was prepared for. I will definitely be thinking about this story as time passes. It leaves a lasting impression.
A well-written, enemies to lovers story with secrets and twists that will turn your world upside down and leave you questioning other people’s actions. Every choice we make has a consequence. Some consequences leave lasting scars. Love and time can heal even the deepest of wounds.
It has been some time since my last “Dear Author” review – but yeah here it comes :
Dear Ms. Hart,
Already since some time your books are on my reading list but as the days always seem to have to little reading time when you are a Blogger always something came up.
But now finally I came across your latest book, the time was right and here I am just after finishing “Between Here and the Horizon” I think you owe me some chocolate or similar for the shock you gave me or something stronger containing alcohol would even be better.
YOU know pretty well the moment I mean I am sure, but just to point out – I am talking about the “event” around the 20% mark my kindle said.
My jaw was actually hitting the floor and my head was shaking in a “No .. no .. NO … you can not be serious… you have to be f.. kidding me” way.
Shortly followed with tears in my eyes … and I can still not fully comprehend that moment or what it did with me.
Well I am not able to say much about the actual story here –due to (for the non reader not so obvious) plotline reasons.
But I can assure the readers that you did your best to create a really surprising plot, because nothing would have prepared me for what happened here, you really muted me down to a “at the kindle pages staring” something.
I have a comparing book title ready to give the readers a hint but I will not use it as it would be to obvious.
Only saying that I was like .. “yeah sure when I turn the page all of this will go away because there has been a misunderstanding” …but it did NOT go away – then a second later there was me checking the book blurb for any mention of this being a paranormal novel as that would have helped my cause in that second, but sorry – no such luck.
The facts were a given and then you really created a spin out of this I would not have expected.
Some things were obvious others were surprising.
The story you wrote unfolded beautiful (while beautiful is a horrible word under the given circumstances) and I would like to congratulate you on a really great storyline with great characters.
So thank you for the entertaining hours you allowed me to have with your book.
Now my thoughts are definitely in the “how do I place some of your other books on my basically totally full reading schedule” area.
“I had been waiting for disaster to strike all my life.”
OMG!
I thought this book would be about a boss faking his own death and then coming back from the dead when the danger has passed, boy was I wrong. The kids were left alone with a stranger, their parents gone, and they were on an island they hate.
“We don’t get a say in it. We don’t get a say in anything.”
I loved the relationship Ophelia had with the kids, and we get to see Ronan’s relationship with them too which makes it heartbreaking to see them without him being there to take care of them. But he has a plan in place.
The idea of the kids being separated from each other is another reason why I agreed with Ophelia’s dissection to stay and take care of them until their uncle agrees to take her place. Then she gets to leave and go back to her normal life.
“The lonely man in the lighthouse. The tormented man living by the sea.”
The story will make you angry, sad, happy, a lot more feelings will be felt when you read it.
Lots of plot twists.
It’s wonderful. To me, any book that manages to make me cry is a good one.
“Don’t walk away for good. I get it if you have to walk away for now. But make sure you come back, okay?”
What a phenomenal read which went way too quickly. Callie hart has an amazing way with words which roped me into this story from the chocking opening and didn’t let me go. The slow burn between Sully and Ophelia, the charming kid,the slow pace small town feels and all the emotions. And in typical style just when I felt everything was settling in the book the rug was ripped out from beneath me.
Truly a phenomenal read which grabbed me and didn’t let go
This story completely devestated me in the best of ways. Callie Hart wrote this gripping, intriguing, yet captivatingly heartbreaking love story that brought out every single emotion in me. I went into this story blind, not knowing what to expect but by the end of it I had a new found appreciation for authors and how draining it must be to compile such intense, yet meaningful words together and have them all flow effortlessly into an amazing story.
In this story Ophelia is struggling to help her parents and their failing restaurant. Having been laid off from her teaching gig, Ophelia accepts a job as a nanny. The catch? It’s half way across the country on a remote island in Maine. When she gets there, things take a turn and that’s when she learns that nothing is as it seems.
Ophelia was amazing in this story. All the tests and tribulations that came her way were met with strength, and determination, where she rose above every challenge. She was selfless, strong, patient, kind and understanding.
As for the hero in this story, he was a broken soul, a lone wolf if you will. Yet he was brutally honest and fearless. Together these two had intense chemistry.
I won’t go any further and spoil the story, but I will say that if you love a small town, slow-burn romance with twist and turns you’ve never imagined, then you need to read this. Real, raw and gritty. The complexity of these characters and the story will most definitely blow your mind and turn you into a Callie Hart fan.
Between Here and the Horizon by Callie Hart is one more story. I mean wow. It’s not actually a new read but it is new to the US. I’m was drawn in and within the rest couple chapters I was blown out of the water. Just when you think you know what’s goin to happen…you are thrown for a loop. This slow burn romance will rock your world and turn it upside down an inside out. I am reeling. Ronan surprised me…then Sully surprised me even more. And the way Ophelia deals with the whole situation and loves with her whole heart…it’s just beautiful.
Slow burn to love! A feisty heroine, out of her comfort zone in the rural setting of an isolated island off the coast of Maine, becomes embroiled in a sibling tragedy as the nanny to two young children. Ophelia is out to help her family when she takes the job as nanny to the Fletcher kids. What transpires is a jarring event that is chilling and sets her on a path to an unlikely future. Ophelia is a terrific character as she struggles to do right by the kids and keep her sanity in the small town, island culture especially when confronted with the island recluse Sully. He’s a handsome brute with a bad attitude and secrets, tragic secrets. This was not what I was expecting but it’s terrific. Different from other stories I’ve read by this outstanding author. There’s a swoon worthy romance, military intrigue and the fabulous island culture. Loved it!
Between Here and the Horizon is a standalone by Callie Hart and this book was full of twists and turns. Our main female character Ophelia is a school teacher who’s been let go of her job as the school is downsizing, and so she’s trying to find a different means of employment to keep her afloat, and to also help out her parents, whose restaurant is struggling. She’s applying for a job with Ronan Fletcher as a nanny for his two young children. The job will take her away from her California home, and she will essentially be living on an island taking care of the kids.
As soon as Ophelia arrives on the island, something tragic happens, and she’s thrown into a difficult situation. She has to make a at leaving or staying and seeing her employment contract through. I really liked Ophelia as a character, and she certainly has a strong moral compass. She tries to do what’s right by the children, but also by the other people she encounters. I honestly don’t know if I would do anything differently if I was in her situation.
The hero of the story is not who you think he is. Underneath the gruff exterior and isolation is someone who’s just yearning to be part of a family again. Our hero served in the war, and he shows that he not only gives up his life for his country, but also for his own family. The repercussions of this, his PTSD from the war, the shambles of his personal life, has taken a toll on him. No wonder he feels as disconnected and angry as he does. This was a complete slow burn of a romance, as the characters incrementally get to know each other while recovering from the situations. The twists really piled on top of each other, so be prepared for all the revelations at the end!
OMG from the first chapter this book grabbed me and had me hooked until the end. It was intriguing and unpredictable with so many twists and I was at the edge of my seat the entire time. Expect to be taken on a rollercoaster ride of emotions and expect to feel it all. The story was well written and so descriptive you could easily picture each scene in your minds eye and it all unfolded so seemlessly.
The characters were complex but so suited to each other. I loved their dynamics and their interactions but it was the characters development that impressed me. This novel was not what I expected but I enjoyed it and I would recommend it.
This book is one of the most beautifully written stories that I have ever read. The premise is so unique, thought provoking, heart breaking but also inspirational. These characters are all so raw and floundering. I could not put this amazing book down and finished it with tears streaming down my face. I can’t recommend this exceptional book highly enough.
This Story Absolutely Captivated Me!
5 stars!
God, loving you is the cruelest, most unkind thing I can ever do to you, and yet I’m going to do it anyways.
BHATH by Callie Hart just fully cemented again why she is one of my favorite authors. This story sucked me in like never before with the huge turn of events that happens right in the beginning. Everything happened so fast, it didn’t seem real, and yet, it was. BHATH is a dark, romantic suspense, and while I didn’t find it dark like the typical dark romances, it plays with some dark themes that definitely make it so. I’ve never really read a suspense before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect, and this just blew me out of the water.
I felt so blinded by emotions with this story. The actions that took place, actions that came so quickly and out of the blue, rendered me speechless, heartbroken, and angry. Quickly, theories were being made about what just happened, because there was no way that it actually did. While one played out like I expected, others became obvious half way through that it wouldn’t go like I thought, and that left me reeling in itself.
This is like a second chance book, and Ophelia and Sully were able to find that with each other. They have this slow burn, tension filled romance, and I loved seeing them finally getting their happy ending together and with the kids. The kids are from Ronan, Sully’s brother, who does the unthinkable. I’m trying to find the right words for this review, because it’s, again, one of those stories where you should go in blind.
This story isn’t fully centered on romance, and I think that’s one of the things I really enjoyed about this book. We read the classic characters of the selfless heroine and the broody, tough hero, but it’s honestly so, SO much more than that. This story is filled with mysteries of two brothers that went to war, tragedies, uncovering one’s past, and moving on, allowing yourself your chance of happiness. I loved seeing everything unfold, and the ending had me tenfold. There was always a plan, whether they knew it or not. This has become a favorite and a comfort read. It’s unique and different from what I’ve read, and if you haven’t read Callie before, this is the one you should start with.
ℝ ‘Between Here and The Horizon’ by the AMAZING Callie Hart
Ok. Firstly, , how?!? I cannot comprehend how every-single-time I am (100% in sync with the characters stories) with Callie’s books… just how does she do it? How? The genius of it all… I’m blown away!
I absolutely loved ‘ ’. I felt like following a life journey, different for each character, but in the end all interlinked. It felt like the really evolved throughout the story, like some sort of learning curve, where I personally felt and learned about love, loss, hate, revenge, hate and forgiveness.
The characters were , as per usual. (How can Callie make me freaking love a character so damn quickly?! I have no idea!) The dynamic between was so beautifully complex, funny and their chemistry was off-the-charts! I loved how when really saw and followed how their evolved. It was fast, it wasn’t slow. It was perfect! Also, the children-characters dynamic was a really nice change for me, from other reads, so I really like it and thought it brought a very interesting, different approach to emotions and plot twists in the book.
I loved the ! It kept me on the edge of my seat, gripping at my kindle like a woman possessed..! 😉 The jumps between the past and the present kept the going and my questions unanswered until the very end.It gave such an awesome pace to the , and I feel like it give us a deeper understanding and insight into the characters!
And holy macaroni, a few chapters in… I did not see that coming AT ALL!I was so confused and shocked at this particular that I checked that I didn’t miss a page! I was repeatedly mumbling “what? how” wtf?” to myself, to the point when someone asked me if I was ok.. 😉 (Um no. I needed answers!) Safe to say, I was from the first page in!
Fantastic read! Callie again, TᕼᗩᑎK YOᑌ for being such an awesome writer!
Must read!!!
Between Here and the Horizon can be read as a standalone. We can read this story at different times. The plot was well developed, I enjoyed the storyline. This story contains love, mystery, passion, and second chances. So you get everything that you waiting for.
Ophelia is a really interesting and strong heroine. Sully was a little rude, but after he got to know Ophelia he was sweet and thoughtful. I really loved the dynamic between them. I cannot tell enough without it contains a spoiler so I don’t. You have to read this book, I highly recommend it!!!
This book is a definite must read from this author! This story is full of mystery, twists and turns ,drama and steam . I wasn’t even prepared for it a little bit I expected it to go in a totally different way and than bam I’m in complete awe of this story and the writing is phenomenal. I don’t want to give anything away so just trust me read this story and hang on your in for a ride!
What a beautiful but tragic story. My heart broke for Ophelia, she literally couldn’t catch a break but also couldn’t shatter, I thought she was amazing. Umm talk about plot twist, I was left with my mouth on the floor
This was a great story. I was captivated from the start with this book. These charaters are very well written
This was my second time reading this story, and I have to say even knowing what happens it’s brought tears to my eyes and sucked me in completely. I for the life of me couldn’t attempt to classify this book to one specific genre. It’s a class of its own and truly an amazing read. A lot of heart went into this story and you can’t help but fall in love with the amazing characters and feel for them and the things they had to endure before finding their happily ever after. I only wish I had more to read, I wasn’t ready for it to end.
Holy mother of all plot twists! Like seriously yelling WTF loud enough to send my husband running. When you read a premise – whether it’s a book from a favorite author (like Callie) or a new to me author – you think you know what’s coming. I assure you that is NOT the case with Between Here and the Horizon. Never in my crazy imagination did I see this book going where it went. Then, you think sure after THAT it must go this certain way… guess what you will be wrong! This book deals with a few different VERY dark subject matters, it can be triggering for some people. This book is gut wrenching, intense, and a roller coaster through all the emotions. I was told this book is so different than what we are used to from Callie and that statement is dead on. Yes, Callie is known for gritty dark books, but this book is unpredictable and will keep you guessing. Ophelia is a great main character. She’s strong willed with a tender heart. Watching her fall in love, both fighting all the way was so fun to watch. The hero is nothing that you could expect and you won’t see him coming, but you will end up loving him as much as Ophelia does. Watching everyone navigate this minefield of emotional upheaval, and twists will hit you in all the feels. Nothing like I’ve ever read in the best way – Between Here and the Horizon will challenge everything you think you know about romantic suspense. I could not put this book down and when it was over I had to sit back and catch my breath.
ARC graciously given by the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Hart is an automatic ‘need to read it’ author for me, and when I have the chance, I go back to her backlist and devour something while I wait for something new.
This one tossed me on my head, flipped me around and then dragged me out to sea, in the best way possible.
I wasn’t expecting anything that happened, leaving me open mouthed and shook by the whole experience.
Ophelia was the kind of heroine I enjoy, and let’s just say that the hero was my absolute favorite kind. A little damaged, a little gruff, the kind I enjoy sweeping up into my harem of book boyfriends.
An unforgettable read.
Callie Hart : Between Here And The Horizon
Well damn! Talk about the unexpected!!!! Seriously, I was open-mouthed from the very beginning and it was just wow!
This is Ophelia’s story, she’s lost her job, her parents restaurant is failing, her soon-to-be ex-husband was a cheat and her only solution seems to be a job opportunity overseas as a live-in nanny / private tutor.
And then….it all just explodes! What I thought it was about, wasn’t. What I thought would happen, didn’t. Absolutely NOTHING was what I expected and it was downright bloody brilliant!!!
My advice, clear your mind, prepare yourself for a bumpy ride and just go for it!
