As the owner of a charming Louisiana bed and breakfast, Holly Davis believes in Southern hospitality—but she draws the line at welcoming the ghost of her cheating husband . . . Burl Davis checked out of this life a little earlier than expected—before Holly could serve him with divorce papers over his extramarital flings. Unfortunately, it was not before he nearly bankrupted her beloved B&B, … bankrupted her beloved B&B, Holly Grove, a converted plantation that has been in her family for generations. Holly would never wish anyone dead, but three months later she’s feeling a lot more relief than grief.
Until Burl’s ghost appears as an unwelcome guest. Before his spirit can move on, her not-so-dearly departed needs Holly’s human help to bust up the drug smuggling ring he was involved with. She has reservations, to say the least, but agrees to assist him if he’ll make a show of haunting the B&B to draw in visitors. But when Holly’s former love, Jack McCann, mysteriously resurfaces in town and checks in, she has to wonder if her B&B is big enough for the ghost of her husband and the very real physical presence of her old flame . . .

An absolutely delightful debut cozy with a protagonist I can’t wait to visit again! Holly is my kind of gal–resourceful, kind, and a wee bit impulsive. Her deep attachment to her ancestral home, despite the annoying presence of her ex-husband’s ghost, makes her determined to weed out the drug smugglers who are threatening to ruin her life. The author does something a bit bold near the end–and I loved it! I also read the preview of the second installment, and it promises to be equally fun. This is the start of a terrific series. I am so looking forward to the sequels.
Holly Davis is struggling to run a Bed and Breakfast in an historic plantation when the ghost of her philandering, drug smuggling husband shows up in need of a favor. It seems he can’t cross over until he takes care of some unfinished business. He has to break up the smuggling operation and he needs Holly’s help to do it. When a love from Holly’s past shows up at the B&B, things get complicated.
Better Dead is a fast paced, clever mystery, served up with just the right amount of Southern charm. An enjoyable read!
Good, standard cozy mystery.
I enjoyed this first book in this cozy series. Holly’s husband has recently died before she could divorce him. She is determined to make her family home a profitable Bed and Breakfast in Louisiana. Her dead husband is still haunting the house and he is hiding some secrets and some crimes. To add to the mix Holly’s high school boy friend has returned to town hiding some secrets as well. Holly has to help her dead husband finish his business on earth so he can pass on, run the Bed and Breakfast and solve the drug running mystery her husband was involved in. I really liked the southern setting. The book takes place during Halloween and a Haunted BB fits the bill. The characters are a lot of fun and there is a lo of humor. The mystery was good and the ending was a surprise. I liked it that the romance between Holly and Jack is not drawn out. I look for word to reading the next book in the series. Enjoy
I liked this book, it got off to a rip roaring start when Holly’s recently deceased, cheating husband shows up as a ghost asking Holly to help him get into heaven.
Not that she wants to but unless she wants him hanging around forever she doesn’t have much choice. As a trade-off she wants him to haunt the bed & breakfast to help bring in customers and save it.
Cute characters. Read quickly and enjoy.
A cute mystery about a Southern girl trying to retain ownership of her “haunted” plantation resort.
This book was great and had quite a few laugh-out-loud moments in it! Imagine having an ex who returns from the grave and is impossible to get rid of! That is the position the heroine in this story finds herself in. Her ex will not be able to “cross over” until she helps him with the mystery surrounding his death. The ending is a surprise, and I couldn’t put this one down!
Very funny. When I imagine the individual scenes I get the giggles. Not a literary giant but tons of fun for those who don’t take themselves seriously.
A pleasant read, nice people. Probably won’t read next one.
Absolutely fun and thrilling. I love this book. Great ghost story with a happy ending
All Holly wants to do is safe her home. A huge plantation in Louisiana which she has turned into a B&B. But what she didn’t plan on was her ex husband, now deceased, coming back as a ghost. But it works in Holly’s favor because it puts her small home town on the map and manages to help save her home.
Burl, her ex husband is there on a mission, rather finishing what he started before his death. Once that is done he can move onto Heaven for good. Which will suit Holly just fine. It does have a few funny moments. But you gotta love Burl the ghost in this one though. A scene stealer is what he is.
A start of a pretty good series for cozy mysteries.
This is really a good read…
interestiong read
An enjoyable read that has just the right blend of twists and laughs
A little too ghosty for me and the female protagonist comes off too dumb.
I very much enjoyed this book, it was very entertaining and fun to read.
A quirky and fun read. I enjoyed it.
A really good book and an easy read.
Let’s see, where do I start. I like a nice ghost story and this book comes with a mischievous friendly ghost. It really is funny in parts due to the heroine getting herself into trouble. Then there is the real trouble of the illegal kind that the ghost caused while he was alive. Enter the hero to the rescue! He brings with him a hint of romance but not enough. This book should come with a warning as I had to purchase the next book in the series! Must see where all this goes!
