The storytelling in this book was amazing. I listened to the audiobook and right off the bat I knew I was going to love it. The narrator did a fabulous job telling the story and bringing it alive.
I must say I got a little confused while listening to the story. I felt like I should have picked a book prior to this one but I kept on listening. Once I got used to the storytelling of going back to now and what happened a couple of years ago it was a very intriguing book and I hated that it ended.
Wow, what an intellectually invigorating and magical adventure! I loved the mix of darker elements, magic, and the lush, complex fantasy world that Wagner created. The beginning was a little difficult to navigate as you learn the distinctions and rules governing her unique world mixed with timeline shifts, but once I had this down, I was engrossed and couldn’t put it down. Reflecting back after finishing it, I applaud the effort and details that went into creating this world and appreciated the layers and need to actively participate in the story. The story line was intense at times and I loved the mix of romance, action, betrayal, and discovery. I look forward to what comes next! If you like slow-burn fantasy and want a break from simple, easy reads, definitely give this a try!
I enjoyed this story, but I think it was made easier by the fact that I read the second book in the series first. There is a lot of back and forth from Disa’s current situation to her past and how she managed to find herself in the circumstances that take us into the second book.
Disa is an insightful character with a latent magic she doesn’t even realize she has. And the other characters simply build around her from one who is flighty, to one who is oblivious, and then to one who is evil incarnate. The story runs the gambit, and it answered so many of the unanswered questions I was left with after reading the second book. I look forward to reading the third and finding out where it takes us.
This author has a brilliant and dark mind that delves into the places we are frightened to go but find alluring. We are drawn into her dark worlds with the caveat that there are red flags along the way and moments we might not be ready to face or have difficulty processing. Personally, I love travelling where she takes me, and I am always pleasantly surprised by the twisted stories within her mind.
I read this book in ONE DAY! Yeah, it was that good. I sat down and didn’t put it down until I was done. The story line was addictive and I needed to know what the heck was going on in this world Raye Wagner created. I loved looking at the map and figuring out which area the characters were in throughout the book. There were no real lulls in the book, it grabbed my attention at the first page and kept it until the last. I will say that if you struggle with timelines going back and forth from present to a few years back throughout, you just need to stick with it. I struggled a bit with my residual chemo brain, but by the end I pieced it all together and boy was it a beautiful story leaving me ready for the next part.
Let me pick my jaw up from the floor before I write this… this story was amazing. I have to say this though, the story skips around in time a bit and while each time jump is clearly marked, if you have trouble with stories that aren’t completely linear, this probably won’t be for you. That being said, this was so dynamic to read. I had read Stolen first, which is now the second book in this series, and now Betrayed has filled in so many blanks and given one heck of an amazing backstory to the events in Stolen. I was screaming internally as I read the last several pages in such a good way! Absolutely amazing, I cannot wait to see what happens next!
This is a heart-wrenching tale of a sinister plot that leads to many deaths and the worst kind of betrayal. The characters are well-rounded, the magic system and world building is unique, and there are several twists and turns. This is dark fantasy and only suitable for older teenagers and up.
A really good start to a new series. It was a bit slow in the beginning, but the characters & world building kept me moving forward. I’m glad I did.
This is a gem a of a read. Can’t wait to move onto the rest of the Magi Rising books.
Loved this book! It was fast paced, couldn’t wait to get to the end! The book definitely keeps your Interest ! It was a bit confusing in the first few pages, but worked itself out very quickly! It had just the right amount of romance, suspense, and twist!! Highly recommend!
Betrayed Magi Rising book 1 is the first book that I have read by Raye Wagner and while I did enjoy this book it took me a minute to get into it. As I was reading this book I honestly felt like I had stepped into the middle of an already ongoing storyline and that I was missing quite a bit of information. While this feeling does lessen as I read, it doesn’t go away completely. The author introduces the reader to two young girls – sisters. They start out close, but you can sense the distance between them even before the terrible and tragic accident that occurs.
The author takes the reader backward in time to different times. I liked having these glimpses to the younger days because the present day is when is Disa is older and supposed to be an adult. The story is heavy with the air of mystery that swirls around Disa the most. She’s looked down upon by so many and I’m curious constantly as to why? Is it because of her magick? There are certain scenes of where I wanted more. I wanted Zadisa to slow down and listen to those around her, but she plows forward and so things are lost. I have to admit…being a huge lover of cats…one of my favorite scenes includes the dangerous panthera. I loved it. I liked the mystery of this mysterious but I wanted to know what exactly it is. What or who created it and why? I have my suspicions but I’m eager to learn more.
There isn’t much that I don’t like about this book. It’s well written, and I enjoy the complexities between the characters. I just wanted the author to give me a bit more in certain scenes and situations.
Overall I am rating this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. I’m eager to learn what happens next and to see where this unique mystery goes that surrounds the characters and the dangers that they face.
This book was intense! It was written with so much emotion and anxiety. Once I started reading it, I couldn’t put it down. I loved the uniqueness of the storyline. It was full of twists and turns. I can’t wait to read more of this series!
