I am not a cosy mystery reader but having really enjoyed two of Debbie Young’s short story collections I decided to give it a go and was not disappointed. Confined to the sofa with a broken ankle Best Murder in Show was the perfect antidote – lighthearted, witty, full of wordplay and a great cast of characters. Sophie Sayers is a charming, naive and slightly ditsy heroine, suspecting everyone of murder and then unmasking the real culprit more by accident than design. Young writes with a light touch and a sharp wit that had me chuckling out loud and turning the pages.
Enjoyed this book.
Enjoyed it very much. Interesting twists.
This book was about a woman who moves to a village because she inherited a house from her great aunt. She gets involved in various activities and gets involved in a murder that happens during the village festival.
I very much enjoy a cozy read, and this book fits the bill. Characters are interesting even if sometimes the plot is a little too obvious. There are plenty of choices out there, but I enjoy the characters and literary style enough to continue to read the series.
I really enjoyed this book and am hoping there are more in the series. The story is very witty and entertaining.
Fun story!! I love that this book is set in a village in England. The setting and main character is enchanting! Loved every page!!!
It was a good read.
Sophie’s imagining so many new acquaintances as out to murder her was a little strange. Interesting to read about life in the English village. The annual ‘Show’ reminded me a bit of the county fair held in the hometown of my grandmother in Iowa who I used to spend summers with. I actually entered a hobby exhibit in the fair. I think the eclectic characters and village scene were my favorite parts of the book.

Good writing and great story!
classic cozy with charm and quirkiness to boot. a bit unconventional, as the murder is not at the forefront but the characters and town oddities pull you in and keep you going. by the end i was completely sucked into the little enclave.
Quick easy read easy to pick up & put down without losing the threads
As an anglophile, I enjoyed the setting of a quaint English village. I enjoyed the book, although I thought the actual mystery came late in the book without much of a buildup and quickly resolved.
Love any English setting, so a small village is great. No violence or explicit mush!
great fun! great adventures!
Life in a small English village after traveling and teaching in Europe is just what Sophie needs to get over a bad relationship. Murder was not what she expected. She must solve this crime with the help of her bookstore boss and friend. Or are they more than friends?
This book didn’t work for me. Some parts seemed well written, but other parts needed more work.
In particular, the climatic scene didn’t make sense. When the hero rescues the heroine after she confronts the murderer, the hero suddenly has the mystery completely figured out? Then why didn’t he stop her two minutes earlier from going to see the murderer? While the murderer is holding a knife at her throat she somehow spares a thought for how she relates to men in general? If someone has a knife at my throat I’m thinking about the knife, not my history with men.
I was also confused by the heroine having such dark thoughts about nice people. It seemed out of line with her personality to suspect everyone of being a murder and every death of being a murder because of one off-hand remark by her ex-boyfriend. It didn’t ring true with her personality and her history with the village.
Fun characters and entertaining read!
An unusual setting and a determined murderer…. great read.
