Shane Ryan returns to Nashua and the childhood memories that drove him to join the Marines. After a prolonged legal battle with his aunt and uncle, Shane has possession of the family home where his parents disappeared over 20 years ago. The house, a monstrous castle filled with ghosts and secrets, is more alive than its inhabitants. When his aunt and uncle come to town, then vanish, Shane’s life … Shane’s life takes a turn for the worse. Detective Marie Lafontaine immediately labels Shane as the prime suspect. And in a race against time, Shane desperately searches for clues about his parents.
But there’s something lurking beyond the walls and beneath the surface. Something sinister that has haunted him ever since he saw its face in the pond behind the house. And it isn’t happy that Shane is back.
It isn’t happy at all.

This is definitely a ghost story! A story which flits seamlessly from past go present, with an eclectic array of both living and dead characters. At times the story was scary and there were moments I felt sorry for the poor souls trapped in the house. There’s nothing gratuitous or gory, just a nice level of fear of things that go bump in the night. Loved it. And will happily read the sequel.
This story started out getting straight to the point. It really piqued my interest. There was no needless amounts of descriptive claptrap that usually goes overboard to the point of being so boring I want to scream Get On With It! Nope, it was pretty fast moving. But the thing that spoiled it for me and made me instantly mad was the ending. I was left hanging! All I needed was a noose around my neck and I would have also been one of the victims in this story. I was so mad, at first I gave it only one star, but then changed it to three because the story line and plot were so good. it’s a shame the end was so disappointing. I guess one would have to buy the next book to learn more and then it would just go on and on. I say forget it. Don’t bother. But it’s up to the rest of you if you want to be kept stringing along. But that’s not my bag.
a good book with a good character build and a haunting setting.
I loved the lead character and all his ghostly friends. It kept me guessing and I enjoyed the thrills too.
I realy realy loved this very original book and all its gosts very enjoyabil for start to finish
I really enjoyed this book, so much so that I purchased the 2nd book in the series. This is a good, scary read!
Sometimes you read a book with a certain expectation of the direction it will go, and it does until it doesn’t. Berkley Street is one of this e books, at the outset it feels like a normal horror story with ghosts and a young person that they interact with, of course this is all told using flashbacks to the past because that child is actually a retired Marine with a bit of a drinking problem who sets out to find his parents after they have been missing for 20 years. I enjoy good horror stories and this one filled the bill on the horror aspect and then it shifted into a whole different direction with revelations from the past. I’m very interested in seeing where the characters go in future stories. In fact I just borrowed the Berkley Street Series 1-9 from KU to satisfy that curiosity.
Very good read. Well worth it and I recommend this book to scary stories fans.
After reading book one of the Berkley Street series I will be sure to read all nine. The main character Shane Ryan comes back to his childhood home to find his parents who disappeared. Funny thing is I did not like him at first but he kind of grows on you. Lots of ghosts good and bad, my favorite is Carl the German he is the voice of reason. I enjoyed everything but the ending it felt a little rushed but I will be starting book two. I like your work Mr. Ripley.
This is a classic ghost story with new and wonderful elements. I read the first one free and then happily signed up for KU so I could read the rest of them.
Its like a whimsical bedtime story for horror lovers.. I could NOT be dissepointed!! Even enjoyed some dark humor in it. Overall a fantastic book!
