If you enjoy swash-buckling pirates on a treasure-hunting adventure with a little twisted romance thrown in, then this is definitely the book for you!!! I was entranced from the beginning. Great pirate book with the right balance of fantasy and romance in the form of enemies-to-lovers!
Runaway Pirate Queen with fae magic…Damaged Navy-man/pirate hunter with healing magic…
Vice & Knigh are both running from their pasts. They’ve changed their names and forged new destinies. Destiny has a twisted sense of humor tho. Vice is loyal, dedicated, determined, and cocky at times. Knigh is structured, family-oriented, dedicated, and closed-off at times. Fate has been working in their lives for a while. Both have scarred pasts that continue to govern and guide their futures.
Beneath Black Sails is filled with action, adventure, an arranged marriage, elopement, a broken engagement, tragedy, stolen glances, longing looks, romance, intrigue, deceit, betrayals, retribution, and redemption.
Would you risk it all to right a wrong?
Beneath Black Sails (Beneath Black Sails, #1), my second read from author Clare Sager. Not being familiar with this author I thought Across Dark Seas (Beneath Black Sails, #0.5) began slowly, but picked up the pace as I read. Not true with this book. Enjoyable, well-written fantasy sea adventure. “I received a free Kindle copy of this book and I’m voluntarily leaving a review.” The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I’ll definitely be reading more from this author! I look forward to Against Dark Tides (Beneath Black Sails #2) (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
This book was amazing.
Action, adventure, pirates, romance, twists, and conspiracy.
Lady Vice was strong and admirable with an endearing weakness that she hides well.
Knigh was equal parts conservative, collected naval officer meets a passionate man discovering his true nature.
Both characters were well developed, the writing style was perfectly balanced, and the storyline progressed nicely.
If you enjoy pirates, strong heroines, and life on the high seas, pick this one up!!!
Lady Avice Ferrer had eloped to escape an arranged marriage and from a noble she ended up a widow turned pirate who dropped the A in her name and became Lady Vice. She was fae blooded and a sea witch who could make the sea and the wind obey her commands so she became the queen of the pirates and her name was known on land and sea. The navy were out to get her and a pirate hunter was trying to capture her as the amount paid to turn her in had grown enormously. Knigh Blackwood needed the money to keep his family from ruin. She was ambitious and the sea was her life so she worked hard for Captain Fitzroy in order to get her own vessel and gain her captaincy. Knigh made a pact by those ready to betray her and sell her out and ended up on the Morrigan, working and fighting side by side with her for many months. Their mutual attraction could not be denied and they became close to one another, but both had secrets from their past which linked them to each other more than they knew and if Knigh’s plan was to succeed her ambition would fail. I loved this breath taking adventure on the high seas, the feisty character of Vice, who was so reckless yet so kind to others, who put on such a show to hide her fear of betrayal by those she cared for. I love the romance which bloomed between Knigh and Vice but hated how she was played. There are many heart stopping moments in the book and I cannot wait to start reading book 2 as this series is so compelling.

Beneath Black Sails begins with Lady Vice, years later after the first encounter from Across Dark Seas. She’s still part of the same crew when we first met her on Across Dark Seas but the change she went through from the prequel to the first book is so big. She’s got now a reputation that would make everyone jealous, and on top of that, she also got a pirate hunter on her heels. She’s totally changed, her character growth from the prequel to this book is unbelievable. She’s confident, strong and for sure doesn’t care what people think about her, she’s finally her true self, the same self she always longed to be but was never allowed to.
At first, I didn’t know what to expect from a pirate story, since I’ve never read one before, but this has taken me by surprise. You have plenty of elements in the story that weaves together so effortlessly, you have pirates, hunter pirates, fae-touched, fae-blooded, and a world full of adventure that awaits to be explored. The story since its a pirate story contains a lot of wording about ships and pirates and having English as the second language, it did make my reading a little bit tricky, but also very interesting because you get so much information about the ships and how they work and the world-building makes your imagination go like crazy.
The story is very intricate and so full of twists and moments that will leave you speechless. The relationship between Knigh and Vice is a bittersweet enemy to lovers with a dash of forbidden love, the sexual tension between them is such a bliss, and their sensual moment is very, very steamy. I liked the fact they are so opposite but at the same time, they’re so alike which makes their “relationship” even more amazing. When Knigh discovered the past connection between them that was such a breaking moment because everything changed and if his actions in the past were not so noble, what he did next for her was really, really beautiful.
Another thing I loved about this story was the body positivity, Vice thought bodies are just bodies and everyone’s body is beautiful and I so loved that part, because even tho Knigh was described as being very hot she never looked at him like a piece of meat ready to be grabbed, but saw him beautiful and didn’t understood why females never said that more often to the men. I really loved that. Also, we get such an amazing cat as a character, Barnacle is like my favorite pet from this story and I hope it will show up in the next books because Barnacle is more than a cat!

Captivating and memorably entertaining! This high seas adventure has everything you could wish for. This is rich and detailed with it’s spectacular storytelling and alluring world building. Enemies-to-lovers with a brash pirate and a determined pirate hunter taking ships and hunting treasure with a betrayal in the mix makes this one unputdownable adventure! The steamy parts don’t disappoint either.
Vee has a fresh if maybe a bit naive outlook and believes that bright things are coming her way. She’s master of her own path if not her own ship and captaining is her heart’s desire. But what happens when an unexpected part of her past comes for her?
Knigh is swoon-worthy and he lives up to his potential. He’s been hurt and traumatized by his own past. He’s willing to do anything to claim the bounty put upon Lady Vice’s head. Even when everything in him makes him question his own beliefs.
Barnacle was my favorite character. Who wouldn’t love a pirate kitty!?
Make sure you pick up this pirate series where we actually get to see the plundering and celebrating. There are so many layers to this unputdownable plot!
I really wish I had liked this book, because it had so much it could have offered. I liked the premise and overall the book had an interesting and somewhat original plot, but sadly it needed more than that for it to pull me in.
Don’t get me wrong, there were moments that I enjoyed. I am a big fan of enemies to lovers in any book so having that at the beginning was what made me catch interest in the plot after a bit of a slow start. I am also very much a sucker for drama and this played in well later on into the story with the big betrayal and even the anticipation of that upcoming moment, since I knew from the get go what Fitzroy and Knigh were planning. That was as far as the intrigue went for me though and that it really such a shame because a lot of elements to the story could have offered a lot of excitement. The open seas, pirating, magic, faery-blood, battle, the history. All of it made me expect adventure and complexity along with the romance and drama, but surprisingly the book was very mellow and slow-going for having such an epic world.
Sure, there were all the fights and piracy which is all good. However none of that was ever really an interest or huge part of the story build, mainly because of how the story was written. It liked to jump a lot from week to week with not much going for the story except traveling, and I can of course see the necessity in this. Otherwise how fun would be to have a dragged out detailed page after page of them just sailing? So the issue in itself isn’t the fact that the story jumped past the travel part, but more that when it went into more detail and became more story driven, well, it didn’t have much to share anyway. It was still mostly about travel, some shopping and taking a swim in the sea, none of which gave me much to be excited about.
This is especially where I feel that the plot failed to deliver what it could have offered. The story’s main focus point seemed to be to fix the main characters together and this went without much of depth or struggle which was underwhelming considering the enemies to lovers part, their history and their personalities. Neither Vice or Knigh gave me much characterization or personality for me to get to know them or get to care about either one of them. The only one of them that brought anything more was Vice, but it felt a bit forced with how she was constantly being so … I don’t know, coy? Flirty? Out there? It didn’t feel real to me and their romance felt like just passing time for the story.
This is the saddest part too, because with their shared history and the faery aspect, with both of them having people letting them down, there was a lot of depth that could have been used to build both strong personalities and a strong romance. This was never taken advantage of and even just left in the air unexplained, like it was already excepted of the reader to know, or like it just didn’t matter if we knew or not. We got next to nothing about what part faeries played into the world and very little about the past in both characters life. The story just didn’t give me a chance to take deeper investment when it breezed past such important twists and aspects to the story. It was a missed opportunity that hurt the book.
At the end of the day I enjoyed some parts (the betrayal) enough to give Beneath the Black Sails three stars. However, I will probably not continue with the series. It had its charms, but for the next book I just don’t feel that anticipation to want to know what happens next.

Beneath Black Sails is my new favorite fantasy romance series! Lady Vice, and her high seas adventures, offer a thrilling read that captivates you from start to finish. Beneath Black Sails picks up 3 years after Across Dark Seas left off. Gone is the naive 18 year old girl who dreamt of adventure she had only read about in books. In her place we have a ruthless, 21 year old, magically inclined pirate queen whom songs are dedicated to and whose reputation proceeds her. However, as is often the case there is more to Lady Vice than what the stories portray. While I enjoy Vice, I am inclined to say that Knigh Blackwood is my favorite character. Even when I hated him. His chemistry with Vice is off the charts! They have a true enemies to lovers relationship that doesn’t necessarily occur in that order. Once I started this book I couldn’t put it down and I anxiously await the next book in the series.
Our heroine can control the weather, but can she master her own fate? Particularly when our hero has very different ideas as to what that fate might be.
This is a fantasy story set on the high seas with pirates, magic and a bit of romance. The story is very well written with a well developed world that is fascinating to explore and discover. Our characters are also well developed with distinct and realistic needs, wants and desires. I particularly loved watching our hero and heroine interact as they slowly learn that life is not black and white and that there is more beneath the surface than expected. As a bonus, we also get some nice steamy scenes, but they fit the story as opposed to be gratuitous. Overall, a highly enjoyable story and I look forward to the more books in the series.
Highly recommended

Is that cover not amazing , it screams pick me pick me up and take me home lol but the real gem is when you start reading and you understand a couple chapters in that you are not doing anything else but reading this book and that you are going to be sleepy in the morning but you just smile and get comfy lol .
Clare draws you into her world from the first page and the main characters become fast friends before you notice , and you are vested in the decisions they make good or bad and you have to know the outcome .
The world building is excellent and makes you feel like you are there with the wind in your face and you can smell the salt air and hear the gulls .
All in all this was an excellent 5 star read that you the reader need in your life it is fantastic . So do yourself a favor and pick this up then sit back and enjoy the adventure and then come back and leave a review only takes a few minutes and helps the author’s more than you know . So go buy this book now lol
The storyline was well written and the characters were so well detailed that I was totally hooked as each and every page was turned until the very end!
Beneath Black Sails is a wickedly delicious pirate tale by talented author Clare Sager. I purchased a copy, even though I’m also on the review team, because it’s so good! THIS IS A REALLY GREAT STORY. IT HAS PLENTY OF ACTION AND ADVENTURE WITH SOME ROMANCE. I LOVED THE CHARACTERS AND FOUND THEM WELL DEVELOPED. THE STORYLINE GRABS YOU AND PULLS YOU IN FROM THE START AND VERY WELL WRITTEN. I WOULD RECOMMEND READING.

Really more of a 4.5 star rating, if I’m being honest. I loved the enemies to lovers trope as well as the female pirate/man of the law coupling. I just was thrilled about the female pirate part. The fact that it involves fae was secondary. This book was a perfect getaway for sick me, who was staying in bed. Not “the sick,” just garden variety sick. This book was great and was hard to put down once I really started it. I did need to eat. And watch Moana with the kids. Lol. There is adventure, romance, betrayal and laughs. Truly a good start to what I hope is a long series. Thank you Clare for your ARC in exchange for my honest review.
The first book in the Beneath Black Sails series a well written pirate, action packed story, I liked the names of each chapter. This is a new Author to me. I want to read the next book in this series. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Best pirate book I can remember reading. Vice is an adorable pirate queen with a wicked sense of humour and plenty of heart. Knighton is the perfect uptight foil, and the sparks between them fly hot and fast. The rest of the cast: Perry, Barnacle, Fitzroy, etc jumped off the pages, as did the world around them. Loved the magical fae-touched version of an Elizabethan England and surrounds – recognizable but with loads of unique details. The fast-paced plot kept me gripped from start to finish. Honestly, I think this is the best book I’ve read this year.
Entertaining adventures at sea! The story takes some surprising turns that kept me reading. I didn’t fully love the characters though, so that lowered my enjoyment of the story. Avice acting like things don’t affect her and being loose with herself bothered me. She’s too cocky, and I don’t like her attitude for the most part. Her attitude and wild and free ways get her in some serious trouble. I like that she’s a strong woman, but being free with your body doesn’t prove independence; it’s all just sad really. Unfortunately, she’s all about this no feelings involved type stuff, which is just something I find so annoying in a premise because it’s so obvious that it’s all just bravado. I didn’t connect with Avice in the prequel and I still didn’t connect with her in this book; I did feel sorry for her though. Being cold and trying to withhold real emotion can only last for so long. Avice is strong in a lot of aspects, but she’s also very weak in a lot of areas and is often ruled by her baser instincts. That kind of thinking leads to making bad decisions and trusting the wrong people. As for the romance, there’s some good passion there. As soon as I read the prequel and the synopsis for this book, I knew exactly who Knigh Blackwood would be, but it was still interesting reading about the development of Knigh and Avice’s relationship. These two do not get off to a good start and have lots of ups and downs in their relationship, but the passion is definitely there. The Fae stuff is cool and I loved Barnacle the cat! Things do move a bit slow at times, but I enjoyed most of the sea adventures. I’m interested to see where the next book will lead; I’m hoping I connect with the characters more. There’s a lot of penance that needs to be done by some characters. Should be an entertaining read.
The story line was good. The story had a smooth flow to it for the most part. The character work was great. This was the first book that I’ve read by this author and I wasn’t sure what to expect. I found the premise of the whole book intriguing. This was an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours. I look forward to more.
