I just finished this book and realised that I have never read one quite like it. The situation of a woman who is supposedly widowed and pregnant going on to find a new life with a new man, then having her former husband walk back into her life. What a dilemma for anyone. I love the way Deborah Raney described the deep feelings each character went through and the excruciating decision that was made that brought a resolution to the whole mess. I enjoy reading Christian romances but I feel that some of them have shallow characters . This one included well developed characters and explored what it truly means to be committed to Christ and to be submitted to His will. My heart was so stricken for each person and I agonized over their seemingly impossible situation.
This is a very heartwarming Christian story that is hard to put down.
Deborah Raney writes books like everyone wished they could, and this one is no exception. I quickly read the blurb (after I bought it), yes that is how I roll with certain authors! I was hooked, I put myself in Daria (don’t you just love that name) place so many times through this book and I can honestly say I don’t know what I would have done in her place. (I still don’t know). I think they made the right decision, I think it was in Nate’s nature to go back to Columbia and I don’t really think if given the choice Daria would have wanted to with children, she had seen up close what a dangerous place it could be. I thank all Missionaries, Doctors with out borders, nurses, etc. do such selfless work that most of us would not do and I thank them and will pray for them all.
Review of Beneath a Southern Sky by Deborah Raney
I believe with my whole heart that God has called me to be on mission within my own culture and people group. But I have often wondered what it would be like to be called by Him to learn a new language, leave all my family, go to foreign soil, and spend a lifetime among a people group totally different from mine. In this book, Deborah Raney has created characters and situations that allow me a peek into the lives of foreign missionaries.
Dr. Nathan Camfield and his wife, Daria, left their families to live among the Timone` people. Weeks after Nathan was called to an outlying village, Daria was given his watch and told by his guides that he had died in a fire. Daria returned to her parents and worked at putting her life together once more.
The whole foundation of this book is the love of God and His forgiveness of our sins when we ask. Then on top of that Deborah has shown us how God’s love is so manifested in the lives of His children that they are able to overcome immense trials and obstacles. But I must warn you – have a box of tissues handy!
I am so very glad I found your book, Deborah Raney. Thank you for the opportunity to get to know these delightful characters. I have already read After the Rains (book 2 of this series) and I am looking forward to checking out another series from your imagination.
This book was hard to put down. Have tissue close by.
Great book. It makes you think what missionary go through. Loved it great writing.
Oh my gosh – I loved this book and never expected the ending to be what it was. Do not want to give anything away but it was an awesome read.
Thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. Truthful dealing with heart wrenching situations.
This was a story with some serious twists. I liked the unpredictable nature of the plot as well as the resolution. Good read.
I loved this book. Unusual setting and plot.
I loved this book!
I would hive it a 10 if allowed. It had the ultimate example of sacrificing love for family. Have tissues ready.
This was a thought-provoking book that brought me to tears yet strengthened my belief that when one reaches the end of their rope, God is there holding on to them with the greatest love imaginable. But that doesn’t mean everyone gets a happily ever after…
This is a situation that happens not very often but after the time the husband is thought dead is long enough that you tend to agree on her desire to get on with her life. Well written and keeps your interest.
This is a wonderful book. It will keep you guessing and emotionally involved through out the entire story. It’s a great example of love for one another and giving of ourselves. It still makes me sad to think of this story, but then I remind myself it’s fiction then I fell better. A great christian read!
Raney does like to tackle difficult scenarios! Good book with a difficult choice by the characters.
This book was one of the best I’ve read in a long time. You could not go wrong in reading this one. I cried at the beautiful ending. Thank you to the author.
Great read! I would recommend this book and the following books in this series to all Book Clubs. This was the first book I read by Deborah Ramey, and I plan to read more.
