Soon to be a major television event from Pascal Pictures, starring Tom Holland.
Based on the true story of a forgotten hero, the USA Today and #1 Amazon Charts bestseller Beneath a Scarlet Sky is the triumphant, epic tale of one young man’s incredible courage and resilience during one of history’s darkest hours. Pino Lella wants nothing to do with the war or the Nazis. He’s a normal Italian … the Nazis. He’s a normal Italian teenager—obsessed with music, food, and girls—but his days of innocence are numbered. When his family home in Milan is destroyed by Allied bombs, Pino joins an underground railroad helping Jews escape over the Alps, and falls for Anna, a beautiful widow six years his senior.
In an attempt to protect him, Pino’s parents force him to enlist as a German soldier—a move they think will keep him out of combat. But after Pino is injured, he is recruited at the tender age of eighteen to become the personal driver for Adolf Hitler’s left hand in Italy, General Hans Leyers, one of the Third Reich’s most mysterious and powerful commanders.
Now, with the opportunity to spy for the Allies inside the German High Command, Pino endures the horrors of the war and the Nazi occupation by fighting in secret, his courage bolstered by his love for Anna and for the life he dreams they will one day share.
Fans of All the Light We Cannot See, The Nightingale, and Unbroken will enjoy this riveting saga of history, suspense, and love.

This book provides a fascinating glimpse into the history of what happened during WW ll in northern Italy and the remarkable story of a young Italian boy, Pino Lella, who intertwines his life as a spy with the Nazi forces toward the end of the war. Highly entertaining, suspenseful
Beautiful. Sad, but just beautiful. Great read!!!!
Based on a true person. It’s about Italy during World War 11.
Despite having read many WWII novels and histories, I know very little about the Italian perspective of the war. I feel that reading the story of Pino Lella’s experiences finally gave me the insight I was lacking. Pino’s courage and bravery in the face of such opposition serves as an inspiration to all. Pino is a 17 year old boy from Milan who is thrust into the war as the Allied bombs explode around him. He is forced to do things to survive that mark him as a traitor to his friends, neighbors, and even some of his family. It is not until later that those actions prove to be heroic. I loved this story and recommend this book to everyone!
This is a wonderful book that I could hardly put down until I finished it!
Very heard to put down loved the characters, especially Pino
I found this book tragic and action packed.
It was excellent
Terrible writing. Horrible!
This haunting book will stay with you long after you’ve finished it.
I loved and hated it! The emotions I felt were strong and I had to put it down a few times (pure irritation and frustration) but at the end of the day, Pino was just a 17-year-old boy with no life experiences. We can all judge from far but in the moment I think that most of us would battle with the decisions he had to make. I commend this man – Pino Lella for the choices he made and the courage it took to finally share his story. Mark Sullivan and his dedication to researching the accounts and ending the story with his findings just completed things neatly. I highly recommend this book if you are a fan of wartime tragedies
We owe so much to men like Pino Lella. WWII era novels are my favorite genre of book and I have read all the great ones. This is one of the greatest. Pino’s story will remain with me forever. I was moved to tears, so many times and felt as I was there each step of the way. I know our paths will never cross, but Pino, I salute you. May you live the rest of your days blessed in the beauty of your gorgeous country and memories of your precious Anna. Thanks Mark Sullivan for sharing this remarkable story with the world.
Great story
One of my favorite historical fiction books. A lot of detail, mesmerizing characters & a real sense of place make this an outstanding fact-based novel. Really highly recommend.
Initially I had a difficult time getting into this book. Once I got into the “meat” of the book, I couldn’t put this book down. It was riveting. It is historical fiction so you know who the players are in the war and how the war ends. I had no idea of the extent of the atrocities! Difficult to read at times, it was nonetheless, a wonderful history lesson because you learned a lot about the heroes and the part they played. I commend the author, Mark T.Sullivan, for the extensive research he conducted in order to write this book.
I love history and have an interest in WWII. This book is based on a real person’s experience in Italy during WWII and told about a part of WWII history I had never heard about prior to reading it.
This was an incredible book. It was a glimpse into Italy during and after WW2, and a powerful tale of humanity and courage.
great book from beginning to end.
This book was truly written beautifully. I recommend this to everyone who loves learning about the past.
The story had a nice flow to it. Foreign vocabulary was well and cleverly placed (mostly German and Italian). In spite of a serious subject and some very harrowing passages, I enjoyed the book very much. People and locations were aptly described and very realistic…I found it a little difficult to accept the extremely young age and maturity of the main character. But of course that was what made his actions so extraordinary.
I recommend this book wholeheartedly!
