I absolutely loved the story of Captain Gavin and Abigail! Abigail is so strong, determined and self-sacrificing. Gavin is noble and good. He’s just the kind of hero you look for in a love story. The characters are well developed and easy to fall in love with. The plot moved along at a perfect pace. There’s mystery, intrigue, betrayal and forgiveness. The authors descriptions are always fascinating and interesting from the picturesque surroundings to the day-to-day workings of the lighthouse. One can well imagine oneself in the midst of the story. Deborah Hathaway is a talent to be reckoned with! Thank you so much Deborah for such a beautiful love story!
Abigail Moore wants nothing more than to spend her days at Golowduyn Lighthouse, watching over and protecting the sailors at sea. Life before moving to Golowduyn was filled with heartache and loneliness. She never knew love or felt like she truly belonged anywhere. But from the moment she stepped foot on those beautiful shores, she felt like she had come home and for once had known peace.
But after her Uncle Ellis’s accident, life changed drastically. She’s left to take care of everything on her own and the closeness she once felt with her uncle had disappeared. Lonely and exhausted, she finds herself going through the motions.
While keeping watch during a storm, Abigail sees a ship crashing into the rocks. She can’t help but feel it is her fault for not guiding the ship away from the cliffs. She knows she must do whatever she can to make sure the sailors arrive safely on shore… even if it means going out on the stormy sea to save the last man on the ship. Little did she know, her split decision to go out would change her life forever.
Captain Gavin Kendricks has enjoyed his time in the navy. But lately, he can’t deny that something is missing in his life. When his ship crashes into the rugged cliffs of Cornwall, he decides it’s time to retire and search for what’s missing. Little did he know, the crash would change his life forever.
When Gavin discovers that the keeper of the lighthouse is his father’s old friend, Ellis Moore, he enjoys the time they share reminiscing about his father. Abigail can’t hide the hurt and jealousy she feels when her uncle comes to life whenever he’s around Gavin. She doesn’t make it easy for Gavin to help her. She’ll prove to both of them that she doesn’t need the help.
It doesn’t take long for Gavin to see just how hard Abigail works to keep the lighthouse running by herself. When tragedy strikes, he knows he must do anything and everything he can to make life easier for her. He soon realizes that she’s what’s been missing in his life. He’s never met anyone like her before and he can’t see his life without her in it. He wants to be there for her, to protect her, to take care of her, to love her, to live the life of lighthouse keeper right along side her. But Abigail knows she needs to let go of her past hurts, her secrets and learn to love herself before she can find her HEA with Gavin, on the shores of Golowduyn.
*dreamy sigh*
Oh how I adored Behind the Light of Golowduyn! Once I started it, I did not want to put it down! I quickly became engrossed in the lives of Abigail and Gavin. My heart broke for every thing that Abigail had endured throughout her life. But Gavin came along and put all the pieces back together by doing whatever he could to ease the burdens that had been on Abigail’s shoulders for so long. Their relationship was truly built on friendship. I enjoyed watching it evolve into something more. There were some who looked at the two of them and thought they did not belong together. But this match couldn’t have been more perfect.
I am loving this series! The setting and characters are absolutely perfect! I can’t wait for the next book to be released! I’m secretly hoping it’s Poppy and Harris… 😉
Ok guys! It’s official! Ms. Hathaway is one of my favorite Regency authors! Her books always suck me in from the beginning and refuse to let me go until the very end. I have adored all her books I have read so far and I’m looking forward to many, many more by her!
Cornwall, a lighthouse, a strong heroine, a handsome captain… what’s not to like. I couldn’t put this book down. Maybe it was all predictable to some but I was surprised by a few parts.
I have enjoyed all of the books I’ve read by this author and world recommend them to anyone who enjoys a good clean romance.
This is one of those books that is hard to put down. The love that developed between the Captain and Abigail was a joy to read about. Abigail worked tirelessly to make sure the lanterns were lit day and night in the lighthouse at Golowduyn. When a ship wrecked on the beach near the cliffs, Abigail launched her dingy to save the two remaining men who left the broken, battered, sinking remains of their ship and plunged into the sea. The two men she saved happened to be the captain and his first lieutenant. Other injured men were cared for by the surgeon in the small rooms available at the lighthouse. From then on, the captain stayed to help with maintaining the lighthouse and to be with the woman who saved his life. Their life initially was not easy. They faced many challenges but were able to push through them and come out the other side with the love that grew between them. I loved this story. I was left with a peaceful, easy, happy feeling as I finished this book. It has left an impression on me that will last for a long time to come.
Lovely Story
I was drawn in from the beginning. This well-written book contains suspense, mystery, and of course, romance. The hero and heroine are engaging. Abigail is selfless and sweet, and Gavin is humble and resilient. Gavin so patiently endures with Abigail as she struggles to trust that he accepts her despite her vulnerabilities. His tenderness toward her had me sighing and smiling the entire time.
There were other characters I wanted to know more about when the book ended. They seemed to have stories of their own, so I hope to see them in the future.
I particularly enjoyed the setting of this book. I have a fondness for lighthouses, and the picture painted of the scenery was thorough but not overdone. I googled Cornwall after reading this book, and it was as I imagined it!
Deborah M. Hathaway’s book Behind the Light of Golowduyn was simply divine. I loved every moment of this book. The author did an excellent job in character and story development. I for one would love to find a Captain Gavin Kendricks of my own.
This is book one of her Cornish romance series and I for one can’t wait to read the others in this series.
This book was amazing! I picked it up not sure what to expect and was completely hooked from the very beginning. I read the entire novel in one sitting. The story has plenty of action and such an original plot. Gavin and Abigail are fantastic characters and I love the way the author developed their relationship. It was flawed, but believable and I appreciated that the characters actually worked on their communication with one another. The romance was sweet and clean, but full of chemistry throughout the novel. The first kiss scene was totally swoon worthy! I definitely recommend this novel and look forward to many more by this author.
Shipwreck!
A dark and stormy night, with a ship foundering on the rocks below a lighthouse—the opening scene in a story I found engaging and exceptionally tender.
How does Abigail, a child born on the ‘wrong side of the blanket” and then abandoned at a young age by the mother unable to care for her, overcome the rejection she has faced all her life? Only by the unswerving devotion of a second son of a gentleman, who made his own way in the world by joining the navy. These 2 are brought together by a shipwreck, then bound together by their love of the sea and their desire to keep ships safe during storms.
I enjoyed this story, which takes close look at the negativity such unfortunate circumstances CAN produce in neglected, abused children, and what is required to displace it. In this story, Abigail gradually realizes that there is an alternative way she can respond when treated poorly by others, that allows her to respond kindly and thus gain the self respect that others have stripped from her—a life lesson we would all do well to learn. She also has to learn to trust the love she sees in her husband is a strong force, that she has the power to either strengthen or tear down herself. We have the privilege of watching this process of self-discovery and unfailing love unfold.
This sweet and clean book will not soon be forgotten. I received a free copy of this book. My review is voluntary.
This story was enticing. The more I read, the more I wanted to read and find out if Abigail and Gavin would have a “happily-ever-after.” The story is made up of some very good people, and some with flaws but are trying to do their best.
Abigail has been doing the work at her Uncle’s lighthouse, he was injured and cannot go up and down the stairs to light the lanterns. She is strong and capable of doing work that men would think a woman could not physically perform. The lighthouse is her sanctuary. She was saved from a destitute life when her Uncle brought her there many years before.
She has a strong desire to help the sailors when they are shipwrecked on the shore. She takes it personally that the lighthouse somehow failed them. One particularly stormy night, she rescues Captain Gavin Kendricks and his sailor. From that moment, Gavin feels compelled to help her in any way he can, including offering to marry her when her Uncle passes leaving her penniless and deeply in debt.
This is a love story that begins as a friendship of sorts. Abigail resents Gavin and resists his efforts to help her, but eventually, they begin to realize that they need each other. I don’t want to say much more about the plot, because I don’t want to give away the angst and danger in the book.
Suffice it to say, I enjoyed this book and plan on reading more from Deborah M. Hataway.
This book contains mild kissing and non-graphic violence.
I was thoroughly captivated by this story from beginning to end. The lighthouse setting was fantastic and I’m not just saying that because I’ve always been drawn to lighthouses and all they represent. The lighthouse in this book came to life and I could feel Abigail’s love and devotion to it.
The story starts out with a very overworked and destitute Abigail, a deadly storm and a brave rescue. Enter Gavin, star of the show (at least for me). Strong, confident, patient, hard working Gavin. He is the perfect balance to Abigail’s insecure, worry prone nature. I loved how the story grew and evolved. It had struggle and depth that I felt. I had a hard time putting this book down. I can’t wait to read more by this author!
I really enjoyed this book!!! I love lighthouses, so the setting was wonderful!! I loved the way Abigail overcame her own insecurities to get to her happy ending. We can all learn a little about forgiveness from this book, too.
Set in the early 1800s in Cornwall, Behind the Light of Golowduyn by Deborah M. Hathaway is a lovely mixture of history, intrigue, romance, and inspiration. I enjoyed traveling to Cornwall and learning more about lighthouses and what was involved in caring for them. Although I wasn’t immediately drawn to Abigail because of her negative, pessimistic attitude, I slowly came to see why she behaved as she did, and she started to grow on me. Gavin was a wonderful hero—helpful, caring, and grateful to Abigail for saving his life and that of his friend. It was enjoyable seeing their relationship grow as they struggled to retain possession of the lighthouse. I’m looking forward to reading more from this author.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Cornwall 1815 Abigail had become keeper of the lighthouse when her uncle became unable to manage when he had a fall. She had always loved going there when she was young, but now the work was becoming harder and was very lonely. She had to keep the lights shinging though for the ships and on the night of a terrible storm, she looked up and saw the wreckage as a ship foundered on the rocks. Hurrying to help she rows out to save one man who looks like he will not make it to shore. Is is the Captain and she takes him home and binds his wounds. Who was to know it was fate it seemed that brought them together? But mischief is afoot and there are a lot of things that begin to happen.
This is a wondeful story that the author brings to life with her descriptons that made me feel I was almost there. The characters are wonderful and watching Abigail and the Captain grow close was great but there were a lot of secrets and mysteries that had to be dealt with.
Prepare to be taken back to a special time and place that only had me wanting to read more from this author!!
I really enjoyed this story about Abigail and Captain Kendricks. Great characters and fascinating information on the life of a lighthouse keeper.
This was a regency romance but with a different take on the regency era. In that it wasn’t about balls and the like. I thought the glimpse into the deatils and life of keeping a lighthouse were interesting. I thought the first meeting of h & H was original and well written. The scenes before the ship crashed really held my interest. The story was well written and kept me turning the pages to how’d it unfold. I think it was a good story of patience, on the part of the H, and gaining confidence for the h. The romance was sweet. I think the author has talent to draw you into the story and I’d read more from her. I could feel the frustrations and anger of the h getting mad at the H alongside the h too, ha!
Abigail Moore was the niece of he light keeper at Golowduyn. It was her job since her uncle’s fall to man the lights in the lighthouse and look for distressed ships. One night, during a violent storm, she witnessed a ship crashed into the rocks near the cliffs and it was up to her to provide the light for the survivors to get to safety. When she saw two men remained and in distress, she rowed to them and helped rescue them and get them to safety. Those two men were the captain and his lieutenant.
Captain Gavin Kendrick was surprised to learn that the boy who rescued them was actually a woman. She was strong and beautiful and he was captivated by her. When he later learned of her plight, he was determined to rescue her. By offering a marriage of convenience, he could save her home and retire from the navy with a purpose to his life. Could there ever be more than friendship between them or would that have to be enough?
This was a beautifully, descriptive story about the Cornish countryside of England and the strength required to be a light keeper. But, the story was so much more about healing, acceptance, forgiveness and love.
I was given an arc copy of this book and I willingly offer my honest review.
After reading the prequel novella of the A Cornish Romance series, On the Shores of Tregalwen, and not being too impressed, I was apprehensive about reading Behind the Light of Golowduyn, but I am so glad that I gave it a chance.
Set in Cornwall, England in 1815, the Regency era with the breathtaking sea as a backdrop, made the novel charming and irresistible. Captain Gavin Kendricks is the perfect man: charming, handsome, and has incredible instincts and a heart of gold. Pure perfection. When Captain Kendricks has to make a challenging decision, to purposely crash his ship into the rocks at the base of Golowduyn lighthouse, a choice that leads the captain literally into the arms of the young lighthouse keeper, Abigail Moore, it is a chance meeting that alters the course of both of their lives.
Abigail is a heavily guarded woman who is haunted by her past, and has given every part of herself to the running of the lighthouse, all to help the many sailers out at sea. It’s this strain that created an insecure, negative, untrusting character that after awhile began to grate on my nerves, almost to the point that I almost put the book down, but luckily I did not give up, namely due to several subjects that were shrouded in mystery until the very end, and worth the wait.
Behind the Light of Golowduyn is an enchanting, whimsical story that transports you to a beautiful lighthouse, is filled with plenty of mystery, angst, and tragedy and is a truly exquisitely written and powerful love story.
Golowduyn lighthouse was perched at the edge Dulatha Cliffs as the sunset the towers light lit up the night sky prevent ships from wrecking on the rocks a storm was starting up and she told her uncle Ellis that it promised to be fears she offered to make her uncle a cup of tea before going to see to the lands uncle Ellis had injured his knees and was not able to climb to the top of the lighthouse so Abigail had to do. Capt. Galvin Kendricks walked across the main deck of HMS valor and told his men that they’d seen storms of smoke and fire of enemy cannons and death and they’d see it to the wind and rain he lowered anchors provided drag to keep them from washing up against the rocks unfortunately someone cut the anchor lines and in the rough weather they broke. Just before they broke there was a fire in the gun deck and they started trying to put it out he had arrested a gentleman named Sanders attacking him and he would be court-martialed in Penzance where he would then be home Sanders younger brother Miles is also on the ship had been lost once the storms started and no one knew where he was but they were sure that he had cut the anchor lines and started the fire they readied the final anchor discovered that the hawser was cut the captain went ahead and told him to lower the anchor and he did then it broken when push them towards the rocks with the lighthouse on he thought he try and stop valor from reaching the larger rocks in either Beecher or make contact with smaller ones so that the majority of the crew would be saved to discover how Abigail met Gavin you need to read the book and you will discover all sorts of very wonderful things. It’s a good book…
Abigail Moore was brave selfless heroine in this story. She wasn’t perfect as she let her fear that Captain Gavin Kendricks was going to take her place as Golowduyn Lighthouse keeper for her uncle cause her to be suspicious of him and try to make him leave. And even though she saved his life she thought she would never be good enough for him. Gavin had to break though the suspicion, secrets, and hidden barbs of the cruel Mrs. Stedman to discover the truth and jewel underneath. There was plenty of suspense involving mutinies, shipwrecks, secret attacks, and an uncertain future. I couldn’t imagine having to climb all those steps several times a day to light the lamps.
Oh, how I loved this book! The story is so sweet, the love so good. It has some of my favorite things in favorite books: it’s clean, a beautiful romance, realistic and wonderful characters, and a happy ending. I also loved the setting. I can picture the sea, cliffs, and lighthouse with the author’s writing skill. I highly recommend it!
I received a complimentary copy of the book. All opinions are my own and are expressed voluntarily.
