After serving seventy years in prison for the murder of her sister, Eula, Della Lee has finally returned home to the Texas town of Puerto Pesar. She’s free from confinement—and ready to tell her secrets before it’s too late. She finds a willing audience in journalist Mick Anders, who is reeling after his suspension from a Boston newspaper and in town, reluctantly, to investigate a mysterious … mysterious portrait of Eula that reportedly sheds tears. He crosses paths with Dr. Paloma Vega, who’s visiting Puerto Pesar with her own mission: to take care of her ailing grandmother and to rescue her rebellious younger sister before something terrible happens. Paloma and Mick have their reasons to be in the hot, parched border town whose name translates as “Port of Regret.” But they don’t anticipate how their lives will be changed forever.
Moving and engrossing, this dual story alternates between Della’s dark ordeals of the 1940s and Paloma and Mick’s present-day search for answers―about roots, family, love, and what is truly important in life.

Loved the way this book depicts the generational, cultural and geographical aspects of a series of traumatic events across three generations of women. Add the wonderfully depicted south Texas setting, the two romantic relationships across time, and a savvy treatment of how our complicated choices in life play out, and wrap it all in fine writing… a real pleasure.
Camille Di Maio is one of my favorite authors! This is the third book of hers I have read and I have enjoyed them all! This book centers on the story of Della Lee who served seventy years in prison for the murder of her sister Eula. The dual timeline tells the story of the murder in the 1940’s and present day when Della Lee is released. The story is one of strong characters and in the end it is a story of love and family. A wonderful read by a gifted storyteller!
I loved this book, although I wasn’t sure I would given that the main character spends most of the book in prison. I thought the premise was quite original and came with a satisfying ending.
Very enjoyable book with an incredible twist at the end! I highly recommend this book- was sad when I finished it cause I couldn’t read anymore!
Another great book by Camille.
Good story. Ending not a surprise for me, but could be for some. I wouldn’t say it was happily ever after, but the ending was very good. Interesting.
Not enough character development
Not typical of what I read but liked it ok.
Loved the twists ad turns in this book
Rather simple writing but mysteries embedded in the story keep you going with several characters that were interesting to follow.
Good beach read but not much more. I would rather give it a 2.5 but that does not work in the survey.
It was OK. U always learn something!
