As snippets go, this was a little vague, but intriguing.
So what I gather is a young boy lives in a commune. Men are dominant (but only the hierarchy) woman are nothing but baby vessels!
The Patriarchs are the leaders, they wear a tattoo claiming they are “family”, their eldest sons also wear the mark, the females in this group are marked also (bearing a different tattoo I’m not sure)
As I said rather vague, but fascinating.
Noah’s father is a patriarch, his mother used to be a loved and cherished woman, but I think the power the patriarch has goes to his head, and he becomes bloated with his power.
Noah has a female friend Natalie (not sure if she was younger or the same age) he needs to protect her, so he comes up with a plan. He’s going to release her from the “family”! How? Well, when goes goes on the “families” next trip (it’s to convert strangers into family, but is it to capture women or entice men into the “family”?)
The release is so sad, he just abandons her! So how will she manage in the outside world? And will he ever be able to find her?
For that answer, I’m going to have to find the next book in the series!!!!

This is a short backstory to Under His Rule, and introduces 14 year old Noah, whose father is a patriarch in the Family, a community of violence where men make the rules, and women & children best obey them-or else bad things happen to them. Noah does his best to save his friend, but he will need her in the future to save the community. Short & sweet.

Under His Rule Short Prequel. Shares A Peek Into The Past And A Look At Young Noah, So Full Of Love For His Abused Mother And Protective Of His Friend.
This is short twenty or so pages that set up Under His Rule. It takes place in a remote community built on and driven by love. There is a class system. On occasion, trips to the outside world are made in order to recruit new members.
Here, Noah is fourteen and receives a tattoo, signifying his membership in the Family. He won’t participate in ceremonies until he is eighteen, but looks forward to learning what they are about.
His parents argue more recently, which worries him. He has a sweet friendship with a little girl, whose parents argue as well. He and the girl promise one another to never lie and never be like their parents. There isn’t anything that Noah can do for his mother because women are only seen as vessels. Weeks later his mother is buried.
When he one day finds the little girl’s mother hiding, he worries about what might happen to her and her daughter. He devises a plan to save his friend and change the community. But whether he really saves her remains unknown, and how Noah himself feels about his plan once he participates in the ceremonies remains to be seen.
*Spoiler* Noah’s agreement with his friend’s mother includes the requirement that she must return one day. How he intends to enforce that is unclear, as the girl herself isn’t aware of the requirement and Noah, a stranger to the outside, would have no control over her safety or her whereabouts, and difficulty in identifying her over time.
This brief prequel shares a peek into the past and a look at young Noah, so full of love for his abused mother and protective of his friend and her mother. He is kind and loving. His friendship with the girl is sweet and innocent. It can be anticipated that the girl will never understand his cruelty, and will feel horribly betrayed.
