There is no way out but to find him before he kills again… Book #1 in the bestselling Blake Pierce mystery/thriller series, with over 400 five star reviews! In the cornfields of Nebraska a woman is found murdered, strung up on a pole, the victim of a deranged killer. It doesn’t take long for the police to realize a serial killer is on the loose—and that his spree has just begun. Detective … spree has just begun.
Detective Mackenzie White, young, tough, smarter than the aging, chauvinistic men on her local force, finds herself called in grudgingly to help solve it. As much as the other officers hate to admit it, they need her young, brilliant mind, which has already helped crack cold cases that had left them stumped. Yet even for Mackenzie this new case proves an impossible riddle, something the likes of which she—and the local force—have ever seen.
With the FBI called in, together, an intense manhunt ensues. Mackenzie, reeling from her own dark past, her failed relationships, and her undeniable attraction to the new FBI agent, finds herself battling her own demons as her hunt for the killer takes her to the darkest places of her mind. As she delves into the killer’s mind, obsessing over his twisted psychology, she finds that evil truly does exist. She only hopes it will not be too late to extricate herself from it, as her entire life collapses around her.
As more bodies turn up dead and a frantic race against time ensues, there is no way out but to find him before he kills again.

I read two books by Blake Pierce. This one keep me guessing who did it. I couldn’t put the book down and want to get the next book in his series.
I like mysteries that challenge me to figure out whodunit. This one fell short.
Great book
As a woman detective, Makenzie, finds her talents, underappreciated by the older men in her force. However, the horrific nature of the serial murder of area women call for her unique talents and intuition. As she works to unravel the case with the help of the FBI, Makenzie discovers that she has become the final target in this twisted killer’s mind. Will she over-reach her capabilities? If so, will she become prey or be rescued by an unexpected hero? Good reading.
New series but still great characters and storyline. I have found that it’s OK not to like the main character from the beginning of the book. With BP stories you need to invest some time getting into his flawed characters but it makes for an interesting read and satisfying conclusion. On to the next book in this series.
Back again to my tried and true mystery murder. I’m a sucker for these like some do Sodoku for intellect I read murder mysteries to keep mentally keen!
Blake Pierce is a very talented author. He delivers believable characters in very chilling plots with plenty of twists to keep you guessing until the last page.
What intrigued me about this book is how skillfully the author portrayed a very intelligent but emotionally damaged and immature young police detective struggling to deal with her personal problems without projecting them on a very convoluted and challenging case. I did find her immaturity somewhat tedious after a while, hence the 4 stars instead of 5. But I have nothing but praise for the author’s ability to weave a complex tale of good and evil, villains and victims, and the sometimes fragile line between the two. An added surprise was to finish the book following its dramatic climax and realize that its title also is the best literary double entendre I’ve encountered in a long time.
Good read
I enjoyed riding with White while she learned her way while dealing with the chauvinistic comments and vibes. I love it that she learned, “for the first time, [to] believe that she was capable.”
I am not a avid reader although I was not able to put this book down I read this book in 3 days because I had to know what was going to happen next great read love this author
Easy read. It will pull you in.
Loved this book
Blake Pierce always tells a great story and keeps me looking forward to the next page and the next book!
This book is very good. Intense. There is minor language if that is a concern.
Couldn’t put it down
I can not put any of this author’s books down once I start reading.
Well worth rereading. One of my top authors. Brilliant detective story.
I like any book by Blake Pierce. They are fast moving reads with alot of action and suspense.
While the plot was good, the timeframe to resolution seemed a bit too fast. For the heroine to win over the dyed -in-the-wool old time small town police force in such a short time was doubtful. The story line kept you on your toes throughout and the resolution was quite good. There were a couple of characters that were not needed, but will probably show up again. All in a, a good read.
