Dr. Paul Johnston can’t get a set of dark, somber eyes out of his head, and the timing couldn’t be worse. The last thing he needs is to fall for a patient. Not now, when he’s been put on paid leave pending review of a formal complaint. One that accuses him of sexual impropriety of some kind. It’s possible he let his newfound freedom as a divorced, out-of-the-closet gay man go to his head, but he’s … but he’s certain — mostly — he didn’t do anything wrong. Now, he’s struggling to handle the reality that his job is in danger and the only guy he wants should be off-limits.
Zane Kavanaugh is floundering, and there’s only one man who soothes the storm inside him.
Reeling from an assault that landed him in the hospital and the painful estrangement from his family since coming out, Zane is trying to get his feet under him and find his independence. He moves in with a roommate and searches for a job, all while recovering from a fractured arm and cracked ribs. None of that hurts as much as the emotional damage he’s suffered. When he connects with Dr. Paul Johnston outside of the ER, he’s drawn to the man’s calm, collected manner. It doesn’t hurt that Paul’s lack of experience with men is sexy as hell, and so are his over-the-top responses when Zane gets his lips on him.
There’s no right time to fall in love.
Paul is afraid to start a relationship, and Zane can only handle so much more rejection. Will these two find their perfect moment, or will they realize you can’t choose when and how you fall in love? If Paul can’t take a risk, he may have to choose: the career he loves or the first man to capture his heart.

Fun age gap story between newly-divorced ER doctor Paul and Zane, a victim of a violent anti-LGBT assault by his stepfather. Paul initially resists the advances of the young man who was briefly his patient in the ER, but Zane is persistent… Ben and Gage (from Heart Trouble – HH#1) are here to offer support to Zane, who turns up the heat on Paul. The prescription written is for a love potion that must be filled… despite an obstacle or two. The audiobook narrated by Kenneth Obi, who gets all the voices right, is a blast.
Paul and Zane both have strength and this is well portrayed. I love that Zane, in particular, pulls no punches and says it like it is no matter who he is talking to. The growth of their relationship from an inexperienced start is sensitively shown and a definite highlight of this book.
First, I want to say, though this says it can stand alone… for full understanding you really do need to read or listen to Heart Trouble. There both Zane and Paul were introduced, and you know more about why Paul is under investigation and why and what happened to Zane and how they met. There is some backstory, but I just don’t feel you get the full effect without reading the other first. Now having said that on with this review.
I did like this book. I fell in love with the author after listening to Book one and I have read book 8 as well. I want all the stories in this series!
Bedside Manner is Zane and Paul’s story. Zane came out in book one to his family. His father disowned him, and his stepfather beat him putting him in hospital inches from death. Paul was his ER doctor.
Paul had just divorced and was trying to live life out of the closet but not going about it in the right way. His advances to Ben were found pervy and out of line causing issues with some nurses.
Paul finds himself in a predicament… choosing between a job that is his life and love or his new romance with Zane.
I absolutely love an Age gap story, though the age gap here was secondary to the possible loss of his job and Zane finding his life and dealing with his dad.
It is a sweet, sexy story with some feels.
I am sure the actual book is good since the story was, but I love the narration by Kenneth Obi. I think he adds a lot of feeling, gives life to the characters and makes it hands-free so you can listen while doing mundane tasks. I highly suggest the audios if you can, but if you are looking for a sweet, hot, book about doctors and college students this is for you!
I think this one is my favorite out of this whole series! I love these two different MCs who seem like they wouldn’t really work out well, make a relationship work and even though I was annoyed at Paul in the first book, I grew to love him and Zane in this one!
All the books in the Ashe Sentinel Series are good. I mean real good. This one however tops them all. What a way to start a new series. After meeting Both Paul and Zane in Heart Trouble I want them to get their stories. Having it be them together in this one was even better. Seeing how they both overcome their pasts and insecurities in the journey to be together was an emotional ride. I felt anger and sadness and at times, joy and happiness. Some places I laughed out loud. I especially loved getting to know Xavier a little more. I strongly recommend this book. Best if you read them all in order but not necessary. I would though because it’s so worth it.
too repetative
The story features two side characters from the first book, Zane and Dr. Paul Johnston. I was really worried about this book because Paul seemed like a total creep in the first book (and well, he was) but it is kind of explained in this book.
Zane is still recovering from being beaten by his step-father and rejected by his own father, while Paul is put on paid leave due to allegations of sexual misconduct. I started to like Paul when his story was more explained – being a gay man in a closet and then the divorce…and no idea how his behavior comes off.
There was a lot of chemistry between Zane and Paul, as well as huuuge distrust coming from Gage. This distrust and the fact that Paul’s job hangs in the balance and could be destroyed by the fact he is falling for his former patient is why Paul keeps pushing Zane away.
I liked how the ending was handled and I enjoyed reading about the progression of Zane and Paul’s relationship. I would not recommend reading it as a stand-alone though as the characters appear a lot and it is difficult to understand quite a few things if you have not read at least the first book in Hearts and Health series (which is also the sixth book of Ashe Sentinel Connection series).
