An intimate, powerful, and inspiring memoir by the former First Lady of the United States #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • WATCH THE EMMY-NOMINATED NETFLIX ORIGINAL DOCUMENTARY • OPRAH’S BOOK CLUB PICK • NAACP IMAGE AWARD WINNER • ONE OF ESSENCE’S 50 MOST IMPACTFUL BLACK BOOKS OF THE PAST 50 YEARS In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most … accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As First Lady of the United States of America—the first African American to serve in that role—she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives, and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare.
In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her—from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it—in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations—and whose story inspires us to do the same.

Very well written. It was a pleasure to read and it gave great insight into the lives of the Obama’s before Barack’s presidency and throughout it. The book also clearly tells what it’s like to live that privilege of being the first family and all they had to consider being the 1st African-Americans in the White House. Wonderful read. I wish all writers wrote this well! Bravo Mrs Michelle Obama!!
Michelle Obama writes a wonderful biography that draws you in with her childhood stories and her journey towards and during the White House.
I wish all my friends would read this book
Hey World!! I wanted to bring something a little new to MissShaunSays. I love to read books and I mean all types of books. I thought I would dedicate at least one post a month dedicated to a book recommendation.
Recently, I just finished reading Becoming by Michelle Obama and this a riveting collection of stories of Michelle Obama’s journey in life. Former First Lady is the combination of brains and beauty. She’s the down-to-earth best friend that can stand in her truth and hold her own no matter if she’s in the neighbor”hood,” high level diplomatic conference or even in the presence of the Queen of England.
Becoming will make you smile, laugh, cry and feel empowered to make a difference. She allows you into her family morals, values, stories of her dad, strength in her marriage, behind the curtains at the White House and so much more.
You feel as though she is telling part of your life story through her words. She shows strength, courage, and determination even in the face of adversity.
To me, this book shows the world the underbelly of the of nation but it also shows more of the compassion and the strength of this nation. I know that we are a country that has become visually divided, but I think that we can become a better representation to the world by just showing compassion. Encouraging each other regardless of zip code, level of education, income or statue, that anything is possible. Become the change.
I want this book…
Becoming can come in both audiobook and hardcopy. Prices range from $15-30 depending on the format and where you purchaseyour book. Audiobooks can be purchased at Audible.com, iTunes, as well as, Google Play Books. Hardcopies of Becoming can be found at Target, Walmart, Barnes & Nobles, Amazon and many more.
Final Thoughts…
I think that Becoming is a must read. It eloquently sends you through a journey of “a child of the Southside…that had strength the the struggle” and ended up the backbone to the first black president.
Until next time…

I listened to her read it on audio, which was great. Very interesting about her experiences from childhood through leaving the Whitehouse, and very much focused on her interior experiences – joys, frustrations, insecurities, proud moments – rather than the politics. Really enjoyed it!
Wonderful description of Michelle’s life and the Obamas’ time in the White House. I feel like I really know her now.
Michelle Obama’s autobiography made me realize just how admirable she is. I loved the insider’s view of how she was raised and how she met Barack. Then there are the stories from their years in the White House. I already admired her, now I realize she is an accomplished writer. Great read!
It was nice to get in a peek of what was going on during the Obama Presidency in her eyes.
Michelle Obama is such an inspiring, warm, generous woman and you feel all of this while reading her memoir. It’s like being given a pep talk by your older sister and your mentor all at the same time.
I don’t give 5 stars often and this book most likely would have been a 4.5 star except the audio book was read by Michelle Obama herself. That was the half star that sent me into the 5 star for me. I am not black, didn’t grow up in Chicago, I am not a democrat, I could go on and on. But what I am getting at is Michelle and I really don’t have anything incommon yet I could see myself in her. I didn’t want to stop listening to this book and found myself finding time to listen more and then being sad when it was over. Thank you Michelle Obama for letting me see into your life. Thank you for being a great wife and mother. The world is a better place because of you. (
A story told with such clarity, strength and honesty. I’ve come away with so much admiration for Ms. Obama.
I never would have imagined the impact this book would have on me. I enjoyed this intimate look inside both her personal and public life. It restored a belief that there are good people out there in politics.
Thank you for sharing and thank you for the sacrifices you made so the this country I hold dear could benefit from the leadership of your collective voices.
God bless you and your family.
I love the Obamas even more after reading this inspirational book. Easy and fluid read with stories we can all relate to especially if you have ever had to work hard to get to where you wanted to be. Just wonderful.
Highly recommend reading. I really enjoyed reading her life story and her achievements.
Loved this book! A very transparent rendition of Michelle Obama’s life!
This book outlines what shaped our first African American first lady into the person she is today including her childhood and rich family life, how she met and fell in love with Barack Obama. and their journey to the White House with their two daughters and her mother.
Becoming, by Michelle Obama is the first memoir I’ve ever read and I have no regrets that I picked it up. I was not expecting what I got out of it- a change in perspective about who I am and who I need to become as a person. I was inspired to become more as an individual from the job I currently have. I now have that urge to do more and have since not been able to let it go. I pray that I’ll be as brave as Michelle was in taking that step into the unknown. Her advice is priceless.
I would encourage anyone to read this book if you’ve been having that urge just like I have to do more or feel stuck in your current position in life.
Best book of the year!! Want to read it again and again!!
Well written and one to share with future generations.
After listening to Ms Obama’s words I had the audio version, I found myself questioning everything I thought I knew as facts, and looking at my own thoughts about the person. She turned out to be someone amazing, with grit, attitude, intelligence, a mother with a drive to make things better for those left in the shadows. She came from the shadows, climbed her way out, never losing sight of her goals or who she was. She faced racism and sexism and held herself above it all even when it cut to the bone. I now admire her and respect what she has done. her work with unseen girls around the world, bravo. If she changed just one girls life, the ripple will move on and she has changed us all.
The woman who was portrayed by the media was a completely different person that the one I met in this book. I admit to disliking the Obama Presidential terms. My family was hit hard by some of the changes and still have not recovered. I hated the first lady because the media sold it to me, news reports influenced me, co workers rants, but racism ? Maybe, I’m not sure. I know I felt it off people around me it might have turned me, I hope not. Hate is a ugly thing and she got a lot of it. I learned a lot from Ms. Obama, one of the most important ones is that I should never trust the media, and when I feel so strongly against someone, look at the whys.
