An intimate, powerful, and inspiring memoir by the former First Lady of the United States #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • WATCH THE EMMY-NOMINATED NETFLIX ORIGINAL DOCUMENTARY • OPRAH’S BOOK CLUB PICK • NAACP IMAGE AWARD WINNER • ONE OF ESSENCE’S 50 MOST IMPACTFUL BLACK BOOKS OF THE PAST 50 YEARS In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most … accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As First Lady of the United States of America—the first African American to serve in that role—she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives, and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare.
In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her—from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it—in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations—and whose story inspires us to do the same.

I thought the book was excellent. Very well written.
Riding on her husbands far left opinions and identity politics the first lady enjoys the trappings of a slobbering love affair with the media. Pretty much a script for a Lifetime TV movie.
The life of one of the smartest and classiest First Ladies of the USA is interesting from the very beginning. I have not been exposed to many African Americans in my lifetime and did have some preconceived notions which this book totally dispelled. It really is too bad that she doesn’t want to be the next President but I totally understand why.
Learned that the Obamas were very involved with kids. Did not know that. Still think Obamacare was a disaster. Never did I ever completely trust the Obama’s.
Well written. Felt like a real conversation. Should be an inspiration to all young girls.
An important memoir and should be required reading for all college students. It is about finding your “ikigai” your purpose in life that gives your life meaning. Before meeting Barack Obama, she had been fear driven, security driven and relentless in her pursuit of what she thought was expected of her. Her story shows how she shifted her paradigm with Barack and what they achieved together.
As an intellectual, lawyer, and academic, her writing style is often reportage more than emotionally revealing deep point of view. She tells us about her fear and doubt, but the reader isn’t fully immersed in those feelings. I wonder if she felt any guilt at achieving such great fortune. Even as she shares her story about growing up on the South Side of Chicago I would have liked her to relay more inner dialog and reach deeper. An example of when she does this beautifully is when she relays her fear at a piano recital, unable to find middle C for lack of the familiar chipped key on Aunt Robbie’s piano. Regardless, this is a brilliant memoir that I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.
Wonderful to know how this woman thinks.
Not just a memoir a history
This was a great read to cap off 2018 – honest, uplifting, inspiring, and reminding me of better days. When they go low, we go high.
Great inspiration for all women!
Great read.
Wonderful insight into the first family, especially grandma !
I absolutely devoured this book and I’m not a huge reader of non-fiction! Through this First Lady’s eyes, I learned so much about the inner workings of the presidency and White House. As well, I learned so much about Michelle Obama herself. I loved her honesty and candor, at the same time she didn’t bad-mouth or unfairly criticize.
While reading this on the beaches of Maui, I noticed many young girls and women reading this book, which I think will provide such inspiration for them.
I highly recommend this book!
This is the best book I read this year!
Very educational, you get to know The President and The First Lady. I wasn’t disappointed at all! Very intelligent people, very family oriented just love The Obamas!
I thought this was a must read. The book was very inspiring and relate able.
Its quickly obvious where Michelle’s beautiful character was built. Didn’t take riches but a loving family that attended to those things that could be easily obtained without cost by anyone that cared. I knew so much about her in the first few chapters. I’m excited to read the next chapters.
Excellent reading. Gives you more insight to the OBamas
Becoming has left me utterly speechless. This was one of my most anticipated releases of 2018 and it has delivered in more ways that I could have possibly imagined.
I just want to thank Michelle Obama for sharing the deepest, most human parts of herself, and for simply being an inspiration. What makes this book amazing is the fact that Michelle does not hold back as she shares her story with the world. I learned so much about this woman and after reading this book I felt truly inspired and motivated.
I voted for Barack Obama twice and became a huge fan of his and his beautiful family. After reading this poised and wonderful book I have an even greater appreciation for this awesome President we had and a great deal of respect for the amazing woman on his side!
