An intimate, powerful, and inspiring memoir by the former First Lady of the United States #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • WATCH THE EMMY-NOMINATED NETFLIX ORIGINAL DOCUMENTARY • OPRAH’S BOOK CLUB PICK • NAACP IMAGE AWARD WINNER • ONE OF ESSENCE’S 50 MOST IMPACTFUL BLACK BOOKS OF THE PAST 50 YEARS In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most … accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As First Lady of the United States of America—the first African American to serve in that role—she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives, and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare.
In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her—from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it—in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations—and whose story inspires us to do the same.

This is the autobiography of the first African American First Lady, Michelle Obama. The story covers her life – from growing up on the South Side of Chicago in a poor, yet loving, family – to becoming the First Lady. She discusses with warmth what it was like growing up in Chicago, going to Princeton and Harvard Law school, meeting Barack, becoming a mother, and finally going to the White House. She became an advocate for young girls and women all over the world. She gives readers a candid look into her life.
This was a great book. Mrs. Obama writes with grace and intellect and even humor. You get to find out how she really felt about Barack running for public office and then finally running for President of the United States. You get an indepth look at her childhood and the love she had for her family. She talks candidly about how it was to protect her daughters from the limelight and the struggle to give them a normal childhood. How she wanted nothing else to be an advocate, a role model, a good mother and a loving wife and what it took to try and have it all.
I encourage you to read this book. I enjoyed every page. Well, until I got to the end and we started to creap to 2016 – the end of their term in the White House – and I felt my chest tighten. She talks shortly about what it was like to hand over the reins to Donald Trump and how she felt about the change that would happen, but mostly she sticks with her ultimate message. For every door that is opened for you, open a door for others. Invite one another in. Don’t let the hate and the fear that has ruled our country for the last two years be what we become.
I loved the writing. Michelle Obama speaks candidly about her life. Starting as a child and ending with leaving the White House one can understand her patience and commitment to herself and her family. She is human, but one with such compassion for people, especially children
Michelle has earned the title of most respected woman in America. She is real, honest, sincere, and intelligent. I think all women should read this book!
Very interesting to follow her life experiences.
Lindas Book Obsession Reviews “Becoming” by Michelle Obama, Crown Publishing Group, November 13, 2018
In Michelle Obama’s Memoir, “Becoming”, Michelle Obama does an amazing job of vividly describing her life and experiences from South Chicago, to First Lady of the White House, and after. The author describes her life growing up with her parents and brother in a family member’s house on the top floor. She loved music and playing the piano. As a child, Michelle mentions she was determined and full of questions. When things seemed unfair at school, her mother would help balance out Michelle’s feelings as well as what was going on in school.
Determination led Michelle to an Ivy League college and to become an attorney who was a mentor for a young man, Barack Obama. Michelle realized that she was not happy practicing in law, and left for other jobs that better fulfilled her needs of giving to people in the community.
In this wonderful memoir, we get a glimpse of a hard-working, strong and independent woman that balances motherhood, work, and being the First Lady. I would highly recommend this inspirational book for those who enjoy memoirs and being part of History.
it was a fabulous book by a fabulous woman.
I did not find this book to be well written and in fact, it was a bit boring. BUT like as a mother and wife can be a bit boring. I expected to hear more about political decisions and controversies.
BECOMING…. it says it ALL!!!
I enjoyed this book which began more like a novel than an autobiography. It truly reminded me the many feelings and mind sets are universal.
Good read, honest
Haven’t finished it yet. I have enjoyed what I have read so far
Much insight into 2 people I really respect
I know recommending this book is redundant with so many other passionate readers, but while i love Michelle, I’m not usually a biography reader. This is an exception. I’m listening to the audiobook and can’t stop! So many simple life lessons learned without a moment of conscious teaching. Brilliant. no wonder it’s the book of the year.
A must read for all
I enjoyed this book tremendously. It was well written and very realistic. It is a mirror into our politics and shows how far we are from being a united country. There is still too many racist politicians. Including our present president .
Exceptionally readable !
She has a truly elegant and humble voice.
Reading this book has defined who Michele Obama really is. Honest insight to the Obama story.
Have not finished yet, but this book is totally a good blast from the past. Michelle’s invites us into her very own private family and it is the story of most black family life. Awesome read so far.
