The summer Opal and her father, the preacher, move to Naomi, Florida, Opal goes into the Winn-Dixie supermarket and comes out with a dog. A big, ugly, suffering dog with a sterling sense of humor.A dog she dubs Winn-Dixie. Because of Winn-Dixie, the preacher tells Opal ten things about her absent mother, one for each year Opal has been alive.Winn-Dixie is better at making friends than anyone Opal … Opal has ever known, and together they meet the local librarian, Miss Franny Block, who once fought off a bear with a copy of WAR AND PEACE. They meet Gloria Dump, who is nearly blind but sees with her heart, and Otis, an ex-con who sets the animals in his pet shop loose after hours, then lulls them with his guitar.
Opal spends all that sweet summer collecting stories about her new friends and thinking about her mother. But because of Winn-Dixie or perhaps because she has grown, Opal learns to let go, just a little, and that friendship and forgiveness can sneak up on you like a sudden summer storm.
Recalling the fiction of Harper Lee and Carson McCullers, here is a funny, poignant, and utterly genuine first novel from a major new talent.

This book is very good for children 10 and older. Not that the younger ones can’t read, but the understanding of this book might be extremely hard for little ones. This book has wonderful characters, each filled with its own characteristics. In my opinion, this book doesn’t have so much words that kids don’t understand, but this is only my opinion. This book is also fantastic for adults, who likes to read stories, and knowing these unbelievably extraordinary stories! The story is fascinating, so get ready to read!!!
Because of Winn-Dixie is a very fun book to read because you get to read about how a girl and a dog have a bond you can’t ever break. Their bond is so strong they never want to let each other go. This book is about friendship and I think lots of people should read Because of Winn-Dixie.
What a delightful story that includes aspects of family, community, friendship, and loss. And when you add Winn-Dixie, a precious dog, he just enhances all of the above. I found myself laughing out loud and then sobbing with tears as I listened to the audiobook. It was a touching story and as an adult I still enjoyed it. It’s definitely not just a book for children.
And, as is ALWAYS the case, the book is even better than the movie! Once you closed the last page (or listen to the last word), you will be left with a warm fuzzy feeling.
I read this book in 4th grade. It’s worth your time. I thought it was a great book! It’s very interesting, there are lots of characters, and you never know what will happen.
What a fun book about a dog and India Opal, for any ages. I highly recommend the book and the movie! The movie and book are both great. You will enjoy it.
This book was inspiring
I like this book because if Dad would never took the job as a preacher than this would not be happenong. And if she did not have Winn-Dixie than she would have made friends
One of the best books I’ve read for middle school students! The main character is engaging and easy to identify with as she finds clever ways to work through her somewhat unique difficulties in life. She is confident that her very busy father loves her, but they are new in town, and she needs to find ways to be content and feel at home.
I read this book a couple of years ago in school and saw the movie and I have to say it was really good.
It is so sweet how this girl goes through all these troubles with just one helper- a dog.
