Her beauty once opened doors, but the felony conviction slams them shut. Harper Cloud used to love the gilded glamour of Las Vegas, but on the far side of prison, she sees the cracks in the veneer. These days, she keeps her head down and focuses on the elderly patients in her care. Even her new wealthy east-coast boyfriend, Derrick, can’t entice her away. She’s trusted men before, and look where … trusted men before, and look where that got her.
She tries to brush off the feeling that she’s being watched. But when she’s followed home one night and her pursuer gets within a hair’s breadth of grabbing her, she knows it’s time to get away from Las Vegas.
Maybe Derrick can be trusted. Maybe his job offer—to care for his aging grandfather in Maryland—will be the second chance she needs.
But Derrick has secrets of his own, secrets that could take him down–and take Harper with him.
Can there be a second chance for someone like her?

Robin Patchen has brought out another book that kept me turning the pages! Harper isn’t someone I could identify with in any way other than Patchen’s magic in bringing such a character to life. A woman who has made so many truly terrible choices in her life, paid a heavy price, and is trying to pull herself together. But her past includes some very dangerous elements and at least one of those elements won’t let her go.
Beauty in Flight
Robin Patchen
Beauty in Flight by Robin Patchen held my attention from beginning to end! I read it in one sitting! The main character, Harper Cloud, does not trust easily. However, she finally meets someone whom she may be able to trust. Will Derrick live up to her hopes or be just like every other man she’s known? I appreciate the author including characters that stand firm on their principles. However, there were other characters that did not, making for an interesting pull between them. I’m anxious for the next book to be released so I can see what happens next!
This is the first book in a three part series. I could not put this book down. Definitely worth the read.
Another good one from Robin Patchen. I love how she tells a story so simply and yet it’s not at all simple. Her characters are well developed and she always gets an emotional response from me. I love the unpredictable nature of her books, how she keeps her story from developing too soon and giving away too much. It keeps me, as a reader, on the edge of my seat. I would highly recommend this book.
I discovered Robin Patchen a little over a year ago as a “new to me” voice in Christian romantic suspense. In short order, I pretty much devoured her Hidden Truth series. When I learned she was doing a new series, I was super excited! This is the first book in a trilogy (don’t worry, the other 2 books are just a couple of months out) and I’m now anxiously awaiting book 2.
This one started a bit slow for my liking, hence the 4 stars instead of 5. Harper Cloud is attempting to get her life back on track and is going to school for nursing, while working in a nursing home, feeding and cleaning up the elderly in her care. Due to her record, she doesn’t believe she will be able to get a real nursing job, but just wants to make her estranged family proud of her. She constantly feels like she’s being watched and when she’s nearly attacked on her way home from work one night, she decides to take her boyfriend up on the offer to move across the country to care of his elderly grandfather. (I absolutely adore Red (the grandfather) and his take on life and how he relates to Harper. ) In spite of the cross country move, the feeling of being watched does not diminish and Harper is continually reminding herself that she is safe. I think that this feeling of being watched and knowing this is a suspense, fed into the feeling of it being slow for me. It took a good bit before the actual action happened. If you’re like me, though, don’t give up just because it starts slow because once it picks up, it definitely picks up! I can’t wait for the next installment to see what happens next!
This book does end in a cliffhanger (though it is a good breaking point – feels like the episode of an intense tv show that ends with “to be continued…..” at the season finale), but the author has indicated that we won’t have to wait very long for books 2 and 3. And…. book 2 will take us to Nutfield, the location for the Hidden Truth books. I’m hopeful we’ll run into some old friends there! This one was a pretty quick read as well with right around 200 pages.
Special thanks to the author for an advanced e-copy of this book. I was not under any obligation to write a review and the thoughts and opinions contained herein are my own.
This is the first book in a new series & I do recommend that you read them in order. Harper has been released from jail and is looking for something but not sure exactly what it is. While there isn’t much romance nor faith shown in the first book Robin Patchen will weave it into the series. There is suspense, action and a strong heroine who is willing to fight for what she thinks is right.
I’ve read most of Robin Patchen’s books and she always weaves a tight plot and keeps you turning the page. As I read – something the author wrote about the series – the story was just too big for one novel. I’m looking forward to the next installment in the series. I received this book as a gift from the author with no expectations on my review. I highly recommend any of this author’s books and while the first book in the series doesn’t have very much about faith nor romance I promise there will be before the end of the series. Robin Patchen always brings those elements into her books. A must read.
HArper Cloud is been tuyo jail for a while but she can’t feel safe, she feels like she is been watched. When she gets a job as a private nurse from red, his boyfriend’s grandfather in Maryland she thinks she can star all over again. But life isn’t easy for Haper and dangerous following her. Can she learn to love herself as God love her and find happiness? A tough story.
Oh I’m so happy to have another series to read by this author ! I can’t wait for the next book in the series ! I received this book for free and I’m freely giving an honest review of it . It has a good message and is faith based with great suspense . I also like the story going back to as familiar town from another series .
I was very disappointed with this book. …..after reading for hours and enjoying, then it ends with needing to purchase the rest of this story! I don’t intend to select any more of this author’s books.
However I was very disappointed that it wasn’t a complete story, just enough to make me want to buy the next. Not even one problem was solved so I just had to let it go and not find out what happens.
One word – CLIFFHANGER. I love Robin Patchen’s books, but I HATE cliffhangers. When you’re on a limited budget like I am & can only afford free books, it needs to be clear about the ending so that I don’t waste my time (since I can’t afford to buy the next book, as good as it is).
The first book was okay, but I didn’t like the ending, unrealistic, so I quit reading
The book ended abruptly, in the middle of the story. Nothing in the story resolved. I would usually buy the next books in a series but this is the first experience that I have had where the first book was not a complete story. I am very disappointed.
I was enjoying this book very much and the characters were complex and interesting with issues that had impact on their current lives. All of a sudden, the book just ended and now I feel that i wasted my time and … if I want to know what happens, I have to purchase the 2nd book and probably the 3rd book in the series. I love books that have additional books to follow but they usually resolve the big issues and address the smaller ones or add more. I wouldn’t recommend this book unless they knew, it was not a stand alone book. I’m just disappointed as I was enjoying the book, the characters and the author writes well.
This is a book in parts. I like books that are in a series, but this on leaves one hanging. I find that quite irritating & do not plan to continue with this set of books.
The story is continued in the next book, something I don’t care for. I don’t mind when the story continues, just not when it leaves you hanging like this.
OK
I was very disappointed that there was no logical conclusion to the book. Having a sequel does not necessarily mean that the first story be left hanging without a proper end.
The writing and story was good. But it leaves you with a cliffhanger. I’ll mentally write my own ending and will not purchase any other books by this author. I really do not like cliffhangers and feel bullied and dissatisfied when authors do this sort of thing. It seems dishonest.
The plot of this book followed the typical recipe, which I often enjoy, of damsel in distress with a knight to rescue her. However there was a different twist that made it more interesting and compelling. I also appreciated the realistic way the story portrayed the gospel and Christian development. I was not a case of getting saved and all the problems are gone. As the characters faced their own struggles I was encouraged.
This is the first book in a three book series. Usually each book tells a story and the next book starts a new story, possibly with the same or related characters. The biggest complaint I have this series it is that none of the books can stand alone. The first two end with cliff hangers. When that happens I feel deceived and angry. That is the reason I gave it only three stars. If the books had been condensed a little (there was enough repetition to do that) and published as one, I would have given it a much higher score
