A beautifully well written amazing quick YA romance. This addicting storyline had me engaged from beginning to end with realistic story. This sweet romance included sad moments, jealousy, declarations, a little drama, different social circles and a fun twist told from dual POVs. The characters were interesting and both growing and learning from their mistakes throughout making for an amazing story. The narration was done effortlessly distinguishing between each character and with just the right amount of emotion really bringing the story to life.
Megan Meyer really brings the characters and the story to life with her narration.
I really enjoyed this story. It’s a new telling of an old tale and I really like the way it’s done. It’s on the lighter, sweeter side and that’s what makes it so enjoyable I think. I would have been more than happy to carry on longer with these characters.
I listened to this book. Rose was the high school mean girl and Adam was from the wrong side of town. He is asked to find dirt on Rose by a friend who Rose was mean to. What happens when Rose and Adam meet? I loved how she changed and how he really saw her. I was waiting for the angst and it came but I loved how the author handled it. The narrator did a good job of switching characters and making me see what was happening.
I really liked Rose and Adam, they are both interesting characters and make a great team. And kudos to Kayla Tirrell for not only tackling serious topics, but also for packing a lot of character development into such a short story.
What a fantastic story! Adam is not the typical surfer recent high school graduate. It’s just him and his mom and he takes being the man of the house very seriously. He works to help his mom pay the bills and money is tight. so tight that he accepts an immoral job from a jealous neighbor. Here’s where he meets the popular girl, the queen of the school, Rose.
Rose shows us how heavily our society leans on beauty. What it does to impressionable young ladies that are struggling with their own body image. Beauty and the Beach gives us a great lesson to take to heart. It also reminds us to look past the visual and to feel with your heart.
The narrator did a good job. Megan Meyer handled a dual POV story greatly. Personally I prefer a male and female narrating a dual book but this wasn’t the case here. However, Miss Meyer didn’t try to give us a Male’s voice. She slightly changed her voices to show differences between the two. I much prefer how she did the narration than a narrator trying, badly, to give us a male and female voice. So this is a super quick listen, just at 2 hours. I was really impressed with how well built and complete the story was. Kayla Tirrell did a fabulous job giving is enough information and background on the characters to care for them. This is a nice wholesome read, light romance. It’d be a perfect by the pool or beach listen as it’s light and sweet. It’ll make your heart feel happy.
Kayla Tirrell has become an author that I know will give me a story with characters I come to love. Beauty and the Beach didn’t disappoint and I once again got amazing characters and a fun summer read. This genderbent retelling of Beauty and the Beast is a perfect summer read!
Adam hopes to spend his summer surfing, but he knows he’ll be working as well. He needs to help his mom with the bills. After family tragedy they’re still struggling a bit. When he gets an offer that will help take some of the pressure off of his situation, he can’t resist. But will his conscience let him go through with it?
Rose was the popular girl in high school and has now hidden herself away from everyone since she had to have surgery that left her with a big scar on her face. She’s not sure how to get back out there since melanoma left its mark. Can a boy she doesn’t know pull her back out of her shell?
For such a short story, both characters go through a lot and there is a big amount of character development. I loved their interactions and how even though they don’t know each other that well, things really make them start analyzing their own situations. I think they found the other at a moment when they were both in need of some extra support.
Even though this book deals with some more intense/sensitive subjects, it didn’t feel rushed being a short story. I loved how everything played out and my only complaint is that I really would’ve loved to have more of these two characters!
If you’re looking for a fast and fun beach read, definitely pick up this book. I know it left a smile on my face. I will definitely be checking of the other books in the Boys of Summer series.
Once again, I’ve read one of Kayla’s books WAY TOO FAST! I honestly can’t help myself though!!
I try to wait and make the story last longer, but end up giving in and reading as much as I can.
I love retellings and gender-bent plots, so this book was definitely a win-win for me.
Since the book was a novella, I don’t want to share too much and spoil it…but let me just say that it was a super cute story and I highlighted like, over twenty parts of it. (Also, I loved seeing Adam work in the store. As someone who has worked in retail—that was completely spot-on!)
As far as content goes: I’m pretty sure there was only two cuss words and I don’t remember anything really suggestive. There was a brief mention of teen pregnancy, but that’s it.
And I agree with the others, I wish it was longer…but I can’t wait to see what Kayla writes next!!
Thank you, Kayla for giving me an ARC of the book in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book. The storyline had some serious topics, but it also had humor and love interspersed throughout. I thought the main characters, Rose and Adam, were very believable and relatable. I loved that they were both trying to be better versions of themselves and that maybe they could help each other accomplish that. I love redemption stories.
Overall, I would recommend this story because it was really well-written and it leaves you feeling good. The only problem with this story is I want more! I would love a full-length book about these two!
