The first book in a lush gothic fantasy series for younger readers of Charlaine Harris and fans of Cassandra Clare.Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she’s struggling to conceal her power, and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a … forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.
Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town’s oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.

What a great story! I was engulfed by this story from page one and I’m still inside. This is the story of Ethan who feels stuck in a small town. He always felt different. The new girl Lena arrives. He knows her. He has been dreaming of her months. Their connection was immediate and then they realize how big their connection really was. And Lena is …
This book sucked me in so much that I had to finish in one sitting! It was great teen gothic. I loved the relationships between all the characters. They weren’t black and white but had wonderful colors through all. It also wasn’t just a classic story line either. You never quite guessed where the plot was going. It was a wonderful start to a …
Absolutely astonishing
Wow, the world-building is definitely fleshed out in this one. This is a longer read, with really fleshed out characters, back stories, a detailed magic system, etc. Definitely an immersive book and a creative world you’ll enjoy losing yourself in. If you’re a fan of witch fiction, this is definitely one you’ll want to check out!
The character/world-building was exceptional. The events, gossip, and rumors are very relatable, being as I grew up the South myself. The characters building was amazing, especially for Ethan and Lena. I also like the included history of the Civil War, as I love a book that includes its own background. Even though the events that happen to Ethan …
I gave this 3 stars because I feel like I’ve here this story line over and over again
I don’t usually read YA, but this is a hauntingly magical read with a heart-stopping romance and a dash of humor.

I love this being from the male of the story’s perspective. I was drawn into his thoughts and the story right away. Being a hopeless romantic, I loved seeing a teenage boy care so much about a girl. I’ve also always loved witch stories and was intrigued by this new version of that kind of tale.
